Snowflake tool vs Allen keys

Updated: 24 October 2026

You are about to buy a flat plate because the title says hex keys, and a proper Allen key set is the other tab. Snowflake tool vs Allen keys is a reach and size question, not a brand question. The plate is a few centimetres of steel with several cut-outs. An L-key is one size on a long arm. The plates we compared are on the [snowflake tool comparison](/hub/hand-tools/snowflake-tool). We did not measure leverage on a bench.

A cut-out in a plate, or a key with a long arm

A snowflake tool is one stainless plate. The openings share a short body, so the handle is whatever arm you can pinch. Where a listing prints a size, the plate is about 6 to 8 cm across. Silver Hinshark says 7.5 cm. Kelamayi says 6 cm by 6 cm. There is no separate shaft and no ball end. The bottle opener and the screwdriver notches are on the same piece, which is why it is sold as a gift. An Allen key is one size. A UK trade listing for a long ball-end set, the 1.5–10 mm pattern sold through Diamond Industrial, describes arms roughly 79 mm to 180 mm. That price is ex VAT and is not in our table. BikeRadar's point is that length is leverage. A short 8 mm bit will not do the job of a long workshop 8 mm. The plate wins on bulk. The L-key wins on a fastener you cannot afford to round. Whether the listing prints sizes is the snowflake multi tool buying guide.

Sizes you can see, and sizes you cannot

A long metric set in that pattern runs 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 mm. Zodazoqa, the only kept ASIN that prints a list, gives Allen openings at 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9 mm, not 1.5, 2, 2.5, 7 or 10. Inch labels on that bullet repeat metric sizes. The other eight plates name hex keys and print no millimetres, so you find a 5 mm bolt by trying the plate. Do not invent 2 mm or 2.5 mm onto a blank size line. A ball end can turn at a slight angle, and BikeRadar warns it is the wrong end on a tight bolt. The plate offers a short straight cut-out or nothing.

Reach, leverage, and a recessed bolt

A hex key of 150 mm is a lever. A cut-out in a 75 mm plate is a pinch. For a loose cover screw that already sticks out, the pinch is enough. For a bolt tightened with a long key, your hand on the plate is the weaker side of the same joint. Adding a tube is the wrong repair. A University of Essex hand-tool note says not to extend a spanner with a pipe. This plate is thinner and shorter than that spanner. Reach fails first when the head is down a hole. The arms hit the housing, the opening never sits fully on the flats, and the head rounds. A long L-key goes in on axis. The seating sequence is on how to use a snowflake multi tool. BGS texts in our file are not marked United Kingdom, and they still say the openings are short. No listing prints a torque figure. Do not treat the plate as the method for brakes, steering or wheel nuts.

When to buy which

Buy the plate when the job is light, the head is proud of the surface, and you want the bottle opener on the same piece of steel. Silver Hinshark at £7.99 in the saved listing is the top pick for that gift-and-drawer job, because of the UK review sample, counted once. BGS 85880 at £5.09 is the best value row when you want a model number. Both are still plates. Use the snowflake tool for a light, reachable head when it is already in the bag, and buy Allen keys when the bolt is tight, recessed, smaller than the plate's printed list, or safety-critical. Buy the L-keys for a 2 mm or 2.5 mm furniture fitting, a bike you care about, or a bolt down inside a housing. A long set from 1.5 to 10 mm covers the sizes the printed snowflake lists skip. A bike multi-tool is still an emergency kit in BikeRadar's account, with separate short bits and often a 2 mm end. A snowflake that starts at 3 mm, or that prints no sizes, does not become that kit because the title says bicycles.

Common questions

Can a snowflake tool replace Allen keys?
No, not as a set. It can turn a light hex head that is easy to reach, if that size is on the plate. It does not give you 1.5 to 10 mm, a long arm, or a ball end. Hinshark and BGS do not print the sizes. Overlap on easy bolts is the fair word, not replacement.
Why does a long L-key turn a tight bolt when the plate does not?
Because the arm is longer, so the same hand force is a larger moment at the head. BikeRadar states that length is leverage. A plate about 6 to 8 cm across is the whole lever.
What about a bolt down inside a housing?
The plate's arms hit the housing before the cut-out sits on the flats. A partial fit rounds the head. A long L-key or a hex bit reaches in and stays on axis. If you cannot seat the opening fully, stop. Tilting the plate to catch the head is how the corners of the hex shear off.
Is a bike multi-tool the same choice?
No. A bike multi-tool is still an emergency kit, with short bits, and it often includes 2 to 8 mm as separate ends. A snowflake plate is one flat piece, and the printed lists start at 3 mm. For a stem or a brake, follow the bike maker.
Do I need 2 mm and 2.5 mm?
You need them if the fitting is that size. Furniture cams and some bike parts use them. The printed snowflake lists we checked do not include them. A 1.5–10 mm Allen key set does.
