Sledgehammer buying guide

Updated: 24 October 2026

You are replacing a rotten fence post and the amazon.co.uk title says sledgehammer. The parcel that arrives may be a hammer about 40 cm long, or a 14 lb head you cannot place on the same spot twice. This sledgehammer buying guide puts the decision in order: a head weight you can still aim, then a shaft length you can check in centimetres, then the lines on the listing that do not match the photograph. The [sledgehammer comparison](/hub/hand-tools/sledgehammer) is the table of the nine hammers kept from that snapshot on 22 October 2026. Peter F. did not swing these hammers in a lab. What you are buying

A sledgehammer, in the sense UK trade guides use, is a long two-handed hammer with a heavy head. A club hammer is the short one-handed tool you use beside a bolster. BS 876 draws that line between club hammers and sledges. A line that says manufactured in accordance with BS 876 is the seller's claim about the hammer, not a certificate that your swing is safe. Several titles in this set say sledge and then describe a mini. The Rolson 10705 is 3 lb at £11.16, and UK reviews call it only slightly longer than a lump hammer. The Amtech A2125 is 4 lb at £11.49, about elbow to fingertips. The Roughneck mini prints 39.8 cm. They are not the tool when the swing needs a clear arc.

Head weight, in this order

BuildWiz, a UK trade note rather than a British Standard, talks about 7 lb, 10 lb, and 14 lb. Its rule of thumb is that 10 lb is the all-rounder, and 14 lb is only for someone who can still hit the same spot. This comparison has no 10 lb hammer. If you are unsure of the swing, start at the Hilka 55600070: 7 lb, item weight 3.18 kg, £25.79, with no printed shaft length. If you can place a heavier face, the Faithfull FAIFG14 is 14 lb and 6.35 kg at £42.70. One UK reviewer passed it on as too heavy. The best sledgehammer in this set names one full-size pick and one lower price.

Shaft length you can check

A longer handle can add speed at the head, and it can also hit the ground, a wall, or your shin. Faithfull sells replacement hickory shafts at 610 mm, 765 mm, and 915 mm. Those lengths are a scale for a full sledge, not a measurement of the fibreglass Faithfull in this table, whose own length is not printed. Read the centimetres that are printed, and do not promote a suspicious axis into a length. The Roughneck 12 lb bullet prints length 6.5 cm and width 90.5 cm. That 90.5 cm figure is a width on the page, not a shaft length. The Hilka, the Faithfull, and the Draper do not print a length at all. Handle material is the next argument, on fibreglass or hickory.

What the listing must show

Before you pay, you want a head weight that matches the item-weight row, a handle material, a length you can believe, and a striking face. The Gorilla item-weight field prints 100 g beside a 1.8 kg head. That 100 g is not the head. The Draper unit-count line prints 1000.0 gram beside a 6.4 kg head. None of these files contains a measured vibration figure. The Roughneck mini, the 12 lb, and the 16 lb saved listings share one review block at 4.8 from 404, and the words describe a mini. That is one sample, not three tests. The Draper is 5.0 from one Australian review, which does not outrank a UK sample of 101. When the job is a slab, that limit is on breaking concrete with a sledgehammer.

Common questions

Is 10 lb the weight to buy?
BuildWiz treats about 10 lb as the all-round DIY weight, and that is a rule of thumb, not a legal limit or a result from this comparison. None of the nine amazon.co.uk listings kept here is a 10 lb hammer. The Hilka 7 lb is the lighter long head in the table, and the Faithfull 14 lb is the full-size fibreglass head. You still have to place the heavier one.
What if I can only choose between 7 lb and 14 lb?
Take 7 lb when a practice swing with a heavier head already wanders off the target, or when you will be working for more than a few minutes. Take 14 lb when you can keep the face square and the job is posts, wedges, or concrete the listing actually names. In this set that pair is the Hilka at £25.79 and the Faithfull at £42.70.
How long should the shaft be?
A full-size sledge sits nearer the 765–915 mm replacement shafts Faithfull sells in hickory than a 400 mm mini. The 610 mm spare is the short end of that spare range, not a mini. Use those figures as a scale only. The fibreglass Faithfull in this table does not print its own length.
Is a 4 lb sledge the same as a club hammer?
Often it is the same sort of short hammer wearing a sledge title. The Amtech reviews describe elbow-to-fingertip length. The Rolson reviews say the handle is only slightly longer than a lump hammer, at 35 cm or 36 cm. A club hammer is the usual partner for a bolster. A 4 lb mini does not give you the reach of a shaft near 900 mm.
Does a longer handle always hit harder?
A longer shaft can move the head faster if you finish the swing, and it makes a miss more likely in a narrow gap. The Roughneck 16 lb bullet prints 89.4 cm, and the head is 7.3 kg before the shaft. If you cannot stop that swing, the extra length is a liability. Do not read the shared Roughneck stars as three tests.
