Sledgehammer for breaking concrete

Updated: 24 October 2026

The path or the old patio looks like a morning's work with a heavier hammer. Some thin, cracked slabs do come up with a sledge. A solid bay, a footing with mesh, or a slab you have not checked for cables does not become a hand job because the head says 16 lb. This page is when a sledgehammer for breaking concrete is enough, when to hire a breaker, and what you confirm underneath before either tool starts. The swing, once the hammer is the right tool, is on [how to use a sledgehammer](/hub/hand-tools/sledgehammer/sub/sledgehammer-how-to-use). The [sledgehammer comparison](/hub/hand-tools/sledgehammer) is the amazon.co.uk snapshot of 22 October 2026.

When a sledge is enough

A sledge is a reasonable tool for concrete that is already cracked, for a kerb, for weak masonry, and for a thin unreinforced edge you can lift so the ground does not swallow the blow. BuildWiz's rule of thumb, a trade note rather than a thickness law, points you at a breaker once solid concrete is about 75–100 mm, or once there is mesh, or once the area is more than about 4–5 square metres. HSS puts hand tools at about three inches and a breaker from about four inches. When the hammer is still right, open an edge and pry it up before you chase the middle. A blow into a slab that is fully supported by the ground bounces. Start at a corner or a lifted edge. If no crack opens, the hammer is the wrong main tool.

When to hire

Hire a breaker when the concrete is solid and around that 100 mm line or thicker, when you can see mesh or rebar, or when the area is a patio rather than a couple of flags. BuildWiz's hire band, about £20–£35 a day collected and about £60–£80 delivered, is that author's range, not a national tariff. A heavier sledge is not the substitute. The Roughneck 16 lb is 7.3 kg on the title, with 89.4 cm on the bullet, at £55.58. Mesh that defeats a 14 lb head defeats 16 lb as well. Site electrics are often 110 V, not the 230 V plug at home. If you are still choosing a hammer for a thin edge, the weight order is on the sledgehammer buying guide.

Services under the slab

Do not break ground until you know what is underneath. HSE records an employee burnt when a jackhammer hit a 415 V cable while breaking concrete for a gate post. The plans had not been used. HSG47 says to get plans and locate services before excavation. The case was a breaker, and the lesson does not shrink because your tool is quieter. Ask for the plans, and use a locator if they are unclear. This page cannot clear your postcode. If the tool hits anything that is not aggregate, stop. A breaker adds noise, so add hearing protection to the eye protection and boots you already needed.

What this comparison can and cannot promise

Faithfull's FAIFG14 bullets name breaking up concrete. The hammer is 14 lb, 6.35 kg, at £42.70, with 4.8 from 101 amazon.co.uk ratings that belong to that listing. UK reviews include concrete wall foundations. That is not a rating for 150 mm reinforced concrete. The Amtech A2125 at £11.49 is a 4 lb hammer with a short shaft. Useful on a thin edge you can lift. The Roughneck 12 lb page asks about concrete and the three bullets do not answer. Do not fill that silence with the shared mini-sledge reviews. No listing here publishes a maximum thickness. The best sledgehammer in this set can still help you choose between the Faithfull and the Amtech when the slab has already passed the thin-and-unreinforced test.

Common questions

Can I break a garden path with a sledgehammer?
Yes, when the path is thin, already cracked, and unreinforced, and you can lift an edge so the blow is not absorbed by the soil. A couple of flags is a different job from a solid bay. If the hammer bounces and no crack opens, stop and reassess the thickness.
How thick is too thick?
Treat about 75–100 mm of solid concrete as the point where UK hire and trade notes move you from a sledge to a breaker. HSS puts hand tools at about three inches and a breaker from about four inches. Those are rules of thumb, not a by-law. Mesh or rebar makes a thinner slab a breaker job as well.
What if there is mesh in the slab?
Mesh or rebar means the sledge is the wrong main tool, even if the tape says less than 100 mm. The steel holds the pieces together after the surface has cracked, and a 16 lb head does not replace a breaker. If you only discover the mesh after the first holes, that is the moment to stop.
Do I need to check for cables?
Yes, before a sledge or a breaker. HSE describes a burn from a 415 V cable struck while breaking concrete for a gate post, after plans were not used. Get the plans and locate services first. A path to a garage is not automatically empty. If the tool hits anything that is not stone or concrete, stop.
Which hammer in this set even claims concrete?
The Faithfull 14 lb bullets name breaking up concrete, and UK reviews mention wall foundations. The Amtech 4 lb bullets name demolition, and reviews mention slabs, on a short handle. Neither claim is a thickness rating. The Roughneck 12 lb listing asks about concrete and does not answer in the bullets.
Is a heavier sledge a substitute for a breaker?
No. Extra head weight helps only on concrete a sledge can already break, until the weight is more than you can aim. It does not remove mesh, and it does not make a thick solid slab into a hand job. The 16 lb Roughneck is still a hammer. Hire the breaker, and confirm whether it is 110 V.
