Precision screwdriver buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a small screw in front of you, and the amazon.co.uk title is a piece count. This precision screwdriver buying guide checks which recess the tip must fill, what a steel name does not prove, and when a case that will not shut wastes the purchase. A precision set is a small driver for a recess a millimetre or two across, not a furniture driver with a quarter-inch hex. Prices and the top pick sit on the [precision screwdriver comparison](/hub/hand-tools/precision-screwdriver). Peter F. used amazon.co.uk listings on 22 October 2026 and did not run a lab test. What you are actually buying

You will meet two layouts. Fixed drivers give each size its own handle. The Wera pouch and the Bosch set are that shape. Bit kits give you one handle and a tray of tips, and the title often counts the handle, the tweezers, and the case. One £9.99 JOREST listing says 40, 38, and 30 bits on the same page. Open the size line, not the piece count. The Bosch Professional GO 3 was a cordless screwdriver with a 6.35 mm hex, so it was left out. A quarter-inch hex is a different tool. A kit that names pentalobe can be more useful than a larger kit that only repeats Phillips.

Match the recess before the steel

Look at the screw. Phillips is a plain cross. Pozidriv adds ribs, and a Phillips bit in that recess cams out. Torx is a six-point star. Security Torx has a centre pin, so a plain Torx bit will not seat. Pentalobe is the five-lobe head on many Apple screws. Compel's table puts P2 at about 0.8 mm for iPhones, P5 at about 1.2 mm for many MacBook cases, and P6 as the less common size. Y000 is a three-wing screw inside some phones. Which listings print those names is on the precision screwdriver for iPhone page. S2 or CR-V on a bullet does not prove the geometry. Only STREBITO prints 60 HRC, as a specification we did not measure. Wera's spec block omits the twelve sizes, and the £3.99 JKG listing prints none.

Magnet, handle, and case

A magnetic title is a sentence, not a test. One JOREST bullet says the bit is magnetic. A UK review of the 52-in-1 says the bit stays dead until a separate ring is added. Gareschten's title says magnetic, and UK reviews say the tips were not, or that the magnet was weak. Test the tip on a loose screw. Hinge thickness is on the screwdriver for glasses page. A swivel cap is not a clutch. JKG's box does not click shut. STREBITO's holder spills bits when the lid closes. None of these shafts is described as insulated. If the screw is near a terminal, isolate the supply first. The Health and Safety Executive's guidance on work near electricity is the rule.

What the standards and the law do not prove

ISO 8764 covers Phillips and Pozidriv tips. ISO 2380 covers slotted tips. Neither means Amazon has checked your parcel. Bosch's bullet says the blades are at least 40 percent over standard according to ISO 2380, ISO 8764, and TMD-705. That is the listing's claim. There is no certificate in this file, and UK reviews still say the small Phillips tips cam out. If the case is smashed or a listed bit is missing, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives a short-term right to reject faulty goods within 30 days. Wera's two-year manufacturer line is the seller's extra promise, not a substitute for that route.

Common questions

Does a higher piece count mean more useful bits?
No. Kits in this comparison count the handle, the case, and the tweezers inside the title, and some pages print two or three totals at once. A useful bit is one whose name matches the recess, such as P2 or a thin flat. Forty unnamed Phillips copies are not more useful than twelve fixed drivers whose sizes you already use. Subtract the accessories, then read the profile line.
Is S2 better than chrome vanadium?
Not as a buying rule on these pages. S2 and CR-V are names on bullets, and the material line often says something else, such as alloy steel or tool steel. Only one bullet here prints 60 HRC, and that figure is a specification, not a hardness test we ran. A wrong profile in S2 still rounds the screw. Match the recess first, then treat the steel word as a label.
Phillips or Pozidriv for a small cross screw?
Use Phillips when the cross is plain, and Pozidriv when you can see the extra ribs between the arms. Forcing a Phillips bit into Pozidriv cams out. Very small electronics crosses are often Phillips or JIS, not the Pozidriv you meet in chipboard screws. If the bit does not sit flat in the recess, stop and try the next size rather than leaning harder.
Why do two JOREST listings share one review count?
B09PY8WQHJ and B0D2HGJFL2 both show 4.6 from 34,877 on amazon.co.uk, and the sampled review texts overlap. They are different model numbers and different piece claims, so they stay as two rows. Read the stars as one shared pool. Do not add 34,877 to 34,877 and call it a larger sample.
When is a fixed driver a better buy than a bit kit?
Choose fixed drivers when you already repeat two or three sizes and you want a full handle that stays on axis. Choose a bit kit when the next device might be Torx, security Torx, pentalobe, or tri-wing and you do not yet know which. The limit is the case. A fixed set in a floppy pouch, and a bit kit whose lid spills, both fail the same way once the tips are on the floor.
