How to use a mini ratchet: lever, tip and short stroke

Updated: 23 October 2026

The screw is in a gap a normal screwdriver will not sit in, and you have a mini ratchet in your hand. You need the lever the right way, the bit square in the head, and a stroke short enough that the pawl is not asked to do a breaker-bar job. This page does not rank the sets or compare prices. Those sit on the [mini ratchets set comparison](/hub/hand-tools/mini-ratchets-set). Peter F. drew the strokes from the listing notes and UK review texts, read on 22 October 2026. Set the direction before the screw is loaded

Set the lever while the screw is still loose, then pull a short test stroke. A Wera Kraftform Kompakt RA sheet turns the switch the way the screw should go, and a middle position locks that handle. That lock is not stated on either Bosch listing here. Which head you bought is a buying guide question, not this stroke. If the lever moves under your hand, stop and reset it. A Bosch 27-piece review describes a lever that sticks, and another text describes a mechanism that stayed locked until it was warmed. Do not warm a stuck pawl on a fastener you cannot afford to round. Yualodzen describes direction as a thumb flick on a 36-tooth head with a stated 10-degree swing.

Keep the bit in the head

The right direction still rounds a screw if the tip is wrong. UK furniture is often Pozidriv. A Phillips bit in a PZ2 recess climbs out as soon as you push. Both Bosch boxes and Yualodzen name PZ1 to PZ3. Starvortex’s published list does not. Geinxurn names Pozidriv, and one UK review says the PZ2 bits rounded the heads. Match the stamp on the screw, not the first cross-head you pick up. Seat the bit, then the tip, and keep a steady push along the screw as you turn. That push stops cam-out. It is not a licence to hang your weight on a 25 mm bit. Bosch reviews say the bit does not always hold the screw, that a magnet came out of a holder on the 26-piece set, and that nutsetters fall off a weak ball.

Short strokes, then stop

Use a short pull, let the ratchet click back, and pull again. The teeth exist for that return, not for a longer lever. Yualodzen states about 10 degrees. LLNDEI and ITRDDGE state 72 teeth and no angle, and neither Bosch box states a tooth count. If the handle clicks and the screw does not move, the pawl is skipping or the tip is out. Do not add a cheater pipe. These eight are not given a newton-metre rating here. Wera’s Zyklop Mini page says up to 65 Nm for that Wera tool, and a different amazon line has said 100 Nm. At work, PUWER 1998 expects equipment that suits the job. A mini ratchet suits access. It does not suit a seized caliper bolt.

Right-angle heads

A 90-degree head changes where you need the space. You need room beside the screw for the swing, and you still have to keep the bit square. Yualodzen is that shape, with the 10-degree claim. Starvortex is an elbow with 36 teeth and no degree figure. A UK Yualodzen review preferred it to a stubby for an awkward screw. The stubby fails when there is no height in line with the screw. Hold the head so the bit stays on the screw axis through that short arc. If your knuckles hit the panel on the return, choke up, or fit an extension only if it does not tilt the tip. The geometry of a stubby against an offset is the mini ratchet vs stubby screwdriver page.

Common questions

Which way do I set the lever before I pull?
Set it so a test stroke on a loose screw turns the fastener the way you want, then leave it there. Wera sheets describe a lock position that is not stated on the Bosch listings here. If you cannot see the screw, test the click on a loose fastener you can see first. A lever knocked the other way undoes the last turn.
What if the lever moves while my finger is on it?
Stop, reset it, and move your finger off the switch. Bosch UK reviews describe that knock, and levers that feel vague. No locked middle position is stated for those boxes, so the lever can sit in either drive and still feel as if it has clicked.
How hard should I push the bit into the screw?
Hard enough that the tip stays seated, and no harder than the bit can accept without camming out. The push is along the screw. A Phillips tip in a Pozidriv head climbs out however hard you lean. If the bit or nutsetter is falling off, seat it again. A magnet that has left the holder will not keep a screw on the tip.
What do I do if the ratchet clicks but the screw does not turn?
Treat that as skip, or as a tip that is not driving. Check the direction, the profile, and whether the bit is still square. If the screw was tight before you started, crack it with a tool meant for that load, then return to the mini ratchet. Do not add a tube to the handle.
Can I put a tube on the handle?
No. A cheater pipe asks a small pawl and a small bit to do a long-lever job. Bits already snap in these review samples without a tube. None of these eight has a torque figure you can borrow from Wera. If a short stroke will not move the fastener, it needs a different tool.
When do I stop and use a different tool?
Stop for brakes, steering, suspension, seatbelts, a stated torque on a carbon bike part, gas, or a consumer unit. Stop as well if the ratchet is skipping, jammed or coming apart, or if it has marked a face you cannot put right. Warming a stuck pawl is not a method for a safety-critical bolt.
Does a right-angle head change how I keep the bit straight?
Yes. Your hand is beside the screw, so the tip wanders unless you hold the head square through a short arc. Yualodzen states about 10 degrees. Use that swing rather than a wide pull that cocks the bit. An extension only helps if the tip stays seated.
