Mini ratchet set buying guide: drive, tips and swing

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are about to buy a mini ratchet set from amazon.co.uk, and the titles shout piece counts. The job is decided by the drive, the tip shapes, and how far the head can swing, not by whether the box says 26 or 48. This page is the checklist for those lines. Prices and the ranked rows stay on the [mini ratchets set comparison](/hub/hand-tools/mini-ratchets-set). Peter F. read the listing lines on 22 October 2026. This is not a laboratory test. Hex bits or square sockets

A mini ratchet set is sold on two drives that both say 1/4 inch and still do not fit each other. Screwdriver bits use a 1/4 inch hex shank, the form covered by ISO 1173. Sockets sit on a 1/4 inch square, the form covered by ISO 1174 and often labelled DIN 3120. The names describe the fitting, not a certificate for the listing. Both Bosch boxes, Yualodzen, Starvortex, Holy Feather and Geinxurn are built around hex bits. LLNDEI and ITRDDGE are square-drive socket ratchets, and LLNDEI includes a bit coupler. The 27-piece Bosch box, model 2607017160, adds a 7 mm nutsetter. Geinxurn names 6, 7, 8, 10 and 13 mm. ITRDDGE says thirteen CR-V sockets and does not list the millimetres.

Pozidriv, Phillips, Torx and hex

UK furniture screws are often Pozidriv. A Phillips tip in that head rides up and rounds the cross. You need PZ1 to PZ3 in the bit list. The word Phillips in the title has not promised it. Both Bosch listings name PZ1 to PZ3 among nineteen 25 mm bits, with Torx T10 to T30 and hex 3 to 6 mm. Yualodzen’s S2 bits add Torx up to T40, hex from 2 mm, and square SQ2 and SQ3. Geinxurn names Pozidriv. Starvortex’s list does not. Holy Feather names Phillips, slotted and hex, lists no sizes, and its measurement line says SAE. Height on the screw against swing beside it is the mini ratchet vs stubby screwdriver page.

Teeth and head height

Tooth count is a swing, not a strength. Yualodzen states 36 teeth and a 10-degree swing. About 5 degrees is the usual reading of 72 teeth. LLNDEI and ITRDDGE state 72 teeth and no angle, so that figure is not a measured 5 degrees. Wiha’s GoBox, outside these eight, does state 5 degrees. Neither Bosch listing states a tooth count. You are then buying a low-profile bit ratchet with a large UK sample, not a published swing. PROXXON’s micro bit ratchet at Axminster, a bare tool rather than one of these sets, is listed at 30 mm high with a bit fitted. That figure is not the height of a Bosch box or a Starvortex elbow. A pawl that skips is not repaired by more teeth.

What the case is allowed to omit

Piece count is the last line. A 48-piece case with unmarked sockets can be less useful than a Bosch box whose sizes are printed. ITRDDGE is 4.0 from one review marked Germany. Holy Feather is 5.0 from one UK review, dated 9 October 2026, in a clear bag. Who should skip those rows is on the best mini ratchet set page. Before you rely on a set away from home, the case should show the profiles you will meet. Bosch’s storage box and the 27-piece transparent cover do that for bits and a short nutsetter list. LLNDEI’s case is listed at 6.3 × 4.3 × 2 inches and 907 g, glove-box sized rather than a jersey pocket.

Common questions

Is 1/4 inch hex the same as 1/4 inch square?
No. A 1/4 inch hex shank is the screwdriver-bit drive. A 1/4 inch square is the socket drive. They meet only with an adapter. LLNDEI lists a bit coupler. A plain bit ratchet does not imply one. If you need nuts, look for nutsetters or a printed socket list. If you need screws, look for the tip shapes. The shared fraction on the title is not a shared fitting.
Do I need Pozidriv if the title already says Phillips?
Yes, if the screw is Pozidriv, which is common on UK furniture. The two crosses look similar and do not substitute cleanly. Both Bosch listings and the Yualodzen bit list name Pozidriv. Starvortex’s published bit list does not. A Phillips tip in a PZ2 head is a usual way to round the screw, and buying a finer ratchet afterwards will not repair that recess. Read the bit line, not the first word of the title.
Does 72 teeth mean the ratchet is stronger?
No. More teeth shorten the swing. Yualodzen prints about 10 degrees beside 36 teeth. About 5 degrees is the usual reading of 72 teeth, and Wiha states that 5-degree figure on a different tool. LLNDEI and ITRDDGE state 72 teeth and no angle. None of these eight should be given a newton-metre rating copied from a Wera page. A pawl that skips under a normal screw is weaker in practice than a coarser head that holds.
When is a socket list worth more than another ten bits?
When the fastener is a nut of a size you can name. LLNDEI prints 4 mm to 14 mm, including 4.5 mm. Bosch stops at nutsetters, with 13 mm as the largest and 7 mm only on the 27-piece set. Starvortex stops at 10 mm. Extra Phillips bits do not move a 13 mm bracket bolt. Extra sockets do not help a Pozidriv cam if PZ2 is missing.
Why is a 5.0 score from one review not enough?
Because one text cannot show a pattern. Holy Feather’s only review is a UK text that liked the reach and disliked the clear bag. ITRDDGE’s only review is marked Germany, so it is not a UK opinion at all. Bosch’s 4.6 from 12,877 and 4.5 from 10,426 are a different kind of evidence, and even those samples include levers that flip and mechanisms that skip. Stars are listing counts.
What should the case contain before I rely on it away from home?
The sizes you will actually meet, in a box you can see is complete. For a house that means Pozidriv and a 4 or 5 mm hex. For a glove box it means 8, 10 or 13 mm, or whatever your panels use. You still pack a separate way to deal with a puncture or a chain. A piece count without a size list is not a roadside kit.
