Brick hammer buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are looking at masonry hammers on amazon.co.uk, and the heads are not the same tool. A 16 oz brick hammer and a walling hammer near 1.1 kg can share one search, and a star line will not tell you which joint is in the handle. This brick hammer buying guide puts the ounces first, then how the head is fixed. The [mason's hammer comparison](/hub/hand-tools/mason-s-hammer) lists the seven kept products with shelf prices. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Products Compared read those cards on 22 October 2026 and did not run a lab strike test.

Brick hammer or walling hammer

Start with the stone, not the brand. Trade lists and the Estwing catalogue put brick hammers around 16 oz, 20 oz, and 24 oz. The Dry Stone Walling Association describes walling hammers from about 2½ lb to 4 lb, roughly 1.1 kg to 1.8 kg, on a shaft around 12 inches. House bricks stay in the lighter band. Field stone does not, and the edge direction matters. The Faithfull is the walling example: 1.1 kg in the bullets, 1.21 kg item weight, about £18.95. UK reviews praise the head and describe the hickory haft snapping. A club hammer has two flat faces for a bolster.

16 oz, 20 oz, 24 oz

Weight inside the brick band trades control against the blow before your wrist tires. The Blue Spot title is 16 oz (450 g), item weight 367 g, about £11.53. UK reviews are mostly fossil hunting, including a head that flew off and a handle bent on pallets. The two weights disagree, and it is a weak all-day brick hammer. The Estwing is about £47.86, 4.6 from 943 reviews, 560 g in the title and 590 g item weight. Reviews praise long use and mention lacquer and a genuineness query. The bullets do not print one-piece. The Roughneck is 680 g on both rows, about £16.20, 4.6 from 810, tubular, with shock, a crooked chisel, and light rust in the reviews.

One-piece, tubular, or hickory

Ask whether the head can leave the handle. A one-piece shank cannot throw a separate head, though the grip can slide. A tubular shaft and hickory both have a joint. HSE leaflet INDG229 treats a loose shaft as a stop. Spear & Jackson claims one piece at about £19.50, 4.0 from 92 reviews, and UK reviews describe the grip sliding. The card names a 15 oz claw hammer and prints 22 oz, 900 g, and 810 g. Roughneck and Blue Spot are tubular. Faithfull is hickory, with repeated haft snaps. Alyco is fibreglass at about £13.48, with no UK review texts, a Mason Pot title, and a Garden style field. Do not copy the Estwing catalogue onto the Amazon card.

What the listing must say

If the title ounces and the item-weight grams disagree, you do not yet know what will arrive. Blue Spot, Estwing, Spear & Jackson, Faithfull, and Alyco all show that split. Roughneck matches at 680 g. JOIKIT is two short hammers for about £14.99, about 840 g against 821 g, with 14 reviews and about 290 mm overall. That pack is a spare. None of these listings claims BS 876. A Masonry Hammers rank is a browse position. Check the head for chips and the handle for movement. If the grip slides, the haft is cracked, or two lines describe different tools, put it down.

Common questions

Is 16 oz enough for bricks?
It can be enough for light chipping and the odd tidy-up. In this set the 16 oz title is the Blue Spot at about £11.53, and the item weight is 367 g rather than the 450 g in the title. Reviews lean toward fossil hunting, with a head-off comment and a bent handle on pallets. It is a weak choice if you expect to cut bricks all day.
When is a walling hammer the right hammer?
Choose it when you are dressing field stone rather than splitting house bricks. The association range is about 2½–4 lb, with the cutting edge either across the handle or in line with it. The only walling hammer kept here is the Faithfull at about £18.95, with hickory and a repeated pattern of the shaft snapping. Read that pattern before you treat the 4.1 star line as reassurance.
Does one-piece steel matter?
It matters if you want a head that cannot leave a separate shaft. It does not stop a grip from sliding. Spear & Jackson claims one piece and has grip-slide reviews at about £19.50. Roughneck and Blue Spot are tubular. Faithfull is hickory. Estwing’s Amazon bullets in this extract do not print one-piece, though the manufacturer page describes it.
Why do two weights appear on one listing?
Sellers often print ounces in the title and a different gram figure in the item-weight row. Estwing is 560 g in the title and 590 g as item weight. Faithfull shows 1.1 kg, 1130 g, and 1.21 kg. Treat the conflict as unset until you can weigh the hammer. Do not average the numbers into a specification the listing never stated.
Do these hammers state BS 876?
No. BS 876:1995 is the British Standard specification for hand hammers, and these amazon.co.uk extracts do not claim it. A star rating and a Masonry Hammers rank are not a substitute. You still check the head and the handle yourself before you swing, whatever the browse rank says.
What should you check before the first swing?
Confirm the ounces match the job, then look for a loose head, a cracked haft, or a grip that already moves. HSE guidance treats a loose shaft as a stop. Read the included-components line as well. The Spear & Jackson card names a claw hammer, and the Alyco card mixes a mason’s hammer with a garden style field.
