Drawknife buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

A drawknife buying guide is what you need when amazon.co.uk shows two-handled blades between about £15.43 and £20.48, plus one sheath model at about £38.31, and the bullets do not always describe the knife in the photograph. You are trying to order a straight or curved edge, a length you can picture on a chair leg or a short log, and a cover for the bench. This page is the order of those decisions. The ten-row table, with scores and the top pick and best value labels, sits on the [drawknife comparison](/hub/hand-tools/drawknife). What you are buying

A drawknife is a blade with a handle at each end. You pull it towards you, so both hands stay on the tool and the wood has to be held by a shave horse, a vice, or a brake. There is no sole and no depth stop. That is the difference from a spokeshave, which is why the drawknife vs spokeshave page exists, and why a peeling spade is a different purchase for a long pole. Woodsmith's FAQ treats a straight blade of about 8–10 inches as the general-duty shape. None of these rows prints a bevel you can compare with the 25 degrees on a Kirschen page.

Length and edge shape

Start with the length you can actually read. Rvluw, B0GS8QDJKR, states 6 inches in the title and on the item-length line, at about £18.99, in carbon steel. PPI, B0C8M5132K, states 10 inches and also prints 25 cm, at about £38.31. banapoy gives an overall size of 35 × 7 × 5 cm at about £15.43, which is handles plus blade, not an edge length. The other rows do not state a blade length. Straight is what most titles claim. banapoy's title says straight and one bullet says curved. A UK review of YWBL-WH, B0CFDVSBCX, says the blade is not straight. A UK reviewer said the Ejoyous blade curves downwards. If the title and a bullet disagree, look at the steel when it arrives.

Steel words, sheath, and listing traps

Tungsten steel and HRC30 appear on several bullets, including YWBL-WH, Greensen, banapoy, OVAQUIXI, and BAFOVY. That figure is not a certificate. Do not rank the knives by HRC30. Rvluw says carbon steel, fully heat treated, with no number. Tyenaza says iron. PPI says hardened steel, and also high carbon and tempered. PPI is the only row whose included-components line says sheath. YWBL-WH, Greensen, and BAFOVY say there is no sheath. A bare edge on a bench is the practical gap: drawknife for removing bark. Greensen, OVAQUIXI, and BAFOVY share one photograph. Ejoyous and Sorandy share another, and Sorandy's bullets describe a bathroom suction rail. Ignore that grab-bar text. An AC/DC line on Greensen or BAFOVY is listing noise, not a powered blade.

What the next pound buys

The entry band runs from banapoy at about £15.43 to BAFOVY at about £20.48. PPI at about £38.31 buys a 10 inch line, a sheath line, and Precise Products AH02. The three UK texts in a sample of 50 criticise price, grind, or sharpness, so the extra pounds buy a fuller specification, not a kinder British write-up. On 22 October 2026, Tyzack listed a Kirschen 300 mm straight drawknife at £58.50 with a 25 degree bevel. Thomas Flinn listed a Crown at £87.55, a Ray Iles at £75.24, and a Robert Sorby straight at £110.81, including VAT. What the amazon rows can support is on best drawknife.

Age and the description

YWBL-WH and BAFOVY have an age field that says Kid. That line does not authorise a sale to a child. GOV.UK guidance sets the sale of this kind of blade at 18. A drawknife is not a small folding pocket knife. A straight title beside a curved bullet, or bullets about a bathroom rail, means the page is incomplete.

Common questions

Straight or curved?
Buy straight unless you already know you want to hollow a seat or a spindle. Most titles here say straight. banapoy contradicts itself, and UK reviews say the YWBL-WH and Ejoyous blades were not straight in the hand. A curved edge is a different stroke, not a cheaper version of a straight one.
Does HRC30 on the bullet mean anything I can check?
No. HRC30 is a sentence in the bullet, not a test certificate in the file. Several brands use the same line. You can see whether the listing names a steel word. You cannot confirm a hardness number from the page, and you should not rank these knives as if you had.
Which listing in this set actually names a sheath?
PPI, B0C8M5132K, lists a sheath in the included components. YWBL-WH, Greensen, and BAFOVY say no sheath. A UK reviewer of the YWBL-WH knife said there was no cover. Everyone else leaves it unstated, so do not assume a sleeve is in the parcel.
When is £38 enough, and when do I look at a UK shop?
About £38.31 buys the PPI specification: 10 inches, a sheath line, and hardened steel named on the page. It does not buy friendly UK reviews in the saved sample. A Kirschen at £58.50, or a Crown, Ray Iles, or Sorby between about £75 and £111 on the Flinn pages read on 22 October 2026, is a different offer: a maker and, on the Kirschen page, a bevel angle. Those shop knives were not scored here.
Can I buy one for a teenager if the age field says Kid?
No. An age field that says Kid is a bad catalogue line. UK sale rules for a fixed blade of this sort are aimed at buyers of 18 and over. An adult can buy the tool and teach with it. The field is not a youth size.
