How to set up a hand plane from this set

Updated: 23 October 2026

How to set up a hand plane starts when the iron has polished the wood instead of cutting it. On these amazon.co.uk listings that usually means a blunt or retracted iron, a mouth left wide, or, on the SUIZAN, a blade that is not seated. Sort the plane into one of three families, set a fine cut, and only then decide the tool is faulty. Prices are on the [Dictum plane comparison](/hub/hand-tools/dictum-plane). Sharpen, flip, or tap

Three set-up families cover the twelve listings. You hone a Bailey or block iron, you flip a RALI chrome blade, and you tap the SUIZAN. The hone group is the two No. 4s, the block planes, the Jorgensen mini and the CTP3. Reviews often say the first edge was blunt. On the CSP4, one review says the instructions tell you to sharpen before use. Retract the iron first, so a proud edge does not dig while you find the adjuster. RALI’s Evolution N page treats the chrome edge as not resharpenable, and a change is listed at under 10 seconds. The tap group is only the SUIZAN SK-001. Which type you should have bought is on the hand plane buying guide. Block against No. 4 is block plane vs smoothing plane.

A Bailey or block iron

Wonkee Donkee’s UK note runs sole, iron, bed, lateral set, depth, then the mouth. Flatten the back for the last few millimetres, then hone the bevel at the angle printed on your listing. Stanley bullets that state an angle say 21 degrees. Sight along the sole and bring the edge out until a hair of it shows, even across the width. A shaving you can see through on scrap is a fine first cut. If one corner digs, use the lateral adjuster. On the Jorgensen, one review says the iron will not sit square. Close the mouth only where the listing says it moves: the Amazon Basics No. 4, the CBP95, the Stanley 1-12-020, and the title of the Stanley pouch listing. The Stanley 220 file does not say the mouth is adjustable, and Find My Tool describes the current 220 mouth as fixed. Set the shaving first. A sole that only rocks is a lap. A mouth that cannot hold the iron square is a return.

A RALI blade

If you have a RALI, flip the chrome blade or fit another when it is dull. The 105 Evolution N, model 108768, lists four 48 mm chrome blades, a depth lever and a chipbreaker knob. Carbide for hardwood is not in the box. Try a fine cut on scrap before you judge the plane. The EVO B listing says one 48 mm chrome blade, while the style field says 105 Monoblock. A crooked blade that will not come parallel is what one German review sent back. The 220 Monobloc file has no reviews, and the blade count clashes. Grinding the chrome edge leaves the system the listing sold.

The SUIZAN dai

The SUIZAN SK-001 is pulled toward you. The body is beech, 170 g, with a 42 mm iron. Tap the top of the blade to advance it and the chamfered rear of the dai to retract it. The maker’s finishing projection is about 0.1–0.2 mm. UK reviews say the fit changes as the wood moves. One iron was tight in summer and loose later. Another dried body would not hold a depth. There is no chipbreaker in the listing. If the iron will not stay put, stop. Forcing it risks splitting the dai.

Return, and do not keep lapping a fault

A blunt iron, a retracted iron, and a sole that needs an ordinary lap are what many of these reviews describe. That is set-up. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 still requires satisfactory quality. The line is whether ordinary honing and lapping can make the body cut. Send it back when the body is cracked, when the mouth cannot hold the iron square, or when a RALI blade sits crooked and the adjuster cannot bring it parallel. Lapping will not machine a new mouth. Retract the iron, or turn the RALI edge in, before the plane goes in a bag. A sharper iron does not repair a dropped frame or a fire door.

Common questions

Which of these planes have an adjustable mouth?
The Amazon Basics No. 4, the Spear & Jackson CBP95, and the Stanley 1-12-020 bullets say the mouth moves. The Stanley pouch title says fully adjustable, and that listing also disagrees with itself on length. The Stanley 220 file does not claim a moving mouth. Find My Tool describes the current 220 mouth as fixed.
How do you set the SUIZAN if there is no screw?
Tap the top of the iron to advance it and tap the chamfered rear of the beech body to retract it. Pull the plane toward you. UK reviews say the fit can be tight in summer and loose once the wood moves, and one review could not hold a depth after the body dried. Use light taps, then a trial pull on scrap.
Can you sharpen a RALI chrome blade?
The listings and RALI’s Evolution N page describe the chrome blade as something you flip or replace. A carbide blade for hardwood is a separate swap and is not in the included components. When both faces are dull, fit the next chrome blade. The Evolution N box line is four of them.
When is a sole bad enough to return?
Return it when the mouth cannot hold the iron square, when the body is cracked, or when a RALI blade stays crooked. Lap a sole that only rocks slightly. The 1 mm and 2 mm bow figures in the Stanley pouch notes belong to that one review.
What do you do with the iron before the plane goes in a bag?
Retract it so the edge is inside the mouth, or turn the RALI blade so the edge is not proud. The same rule applies to the Stanley listing that includes a pouch. A proud iron nicks the edge and cuts hands.
