Hand plane buying guide for this amazon.co.uk set

Updated: 23 October 2026

This hand plane buying guide is for a first plane from twelve amazon.co.uk listings under a Dictum plane heading. The useful order is the job, then whether you will hone, then the price band. A badge comes after that, on the main table. None of these ASINs is a Dictum plane from dictum.com. Model rows, shelf prices and review counts are on the [Dictum plane comparison](/hub/hand-tools/dictum-plane). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. These are not Dictum planes

Dictum sells its own cast-steel and wooden planes on dictum.com, in euros, including a pocket plane and a No. 62 low-angle jack. That shop is not amazon.co.uk. A Dictum-branded iron is not one of these twelve listings. What you have here is two No. 4 bench planes, several western block planes, a 3 inch trimmer, a mini ductile-iron plane, a 42 mm Japanese pull kanna, and three Swiss RALI planes with reversible blades. Prices on 19 October 2026 run from about £10.99 to about £117.23. This page is the order you decide in.

Match the plane to the job

A No. 4 is the two-handed smoother. The Amazon Basics plane has a 51 mm iron and weighs 1.21 kg. The Spear & Jackson CSP4 has a 50 mm iron and weighs 1.8 kg. A block plane is one-handed and bevel up: the CBP95, the Stanley 220, the Stanley 1-12-020 and the Stanley with a pouch. End grain and a chamfer are the block-plane jobs. The Jorgensen 70700 and the CTP3 are smaller again. Reviews use them on door edges and corners. They will not flatten a face. The SUIZAN SK-001 is a 42 mm kanna you pull. The RALI listings replace honing with a reversible chrome blade. If you are still choosing block or No. 4, read block plane vs smoothing plane. A rubbing internal door is plane a sticking door. There is no No. 5 in this folder.

Hone, flip, or tap

Most of the metal planes here want a hone. Reviews on the cheaper No. 4s often say the iron arrived blunt. On the Spear & Jackson CSP4, one review says the instructions tell you to sharpen before use. A cracked body, a mouth that will not let the iron sit square, or a crooked RALI blade is a reason to reject the goods under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. RALI’s chrome blades are flipped or replaced, and the Evolution N page treats them as not resharpenable. Carbide for hardwood is an extra blade. The SUIZAN has no screw. You tap the iron, and UK reviews say the fit moves as the beech moves. If you will hone, a No. 4 at about £16 to £17 is the usual first buy here. If you will not, look at the RALI 105 Evolution N. The first shaving is how to set up a hand plane.

What the £10.99 to £117.23 band is buying

The entry band is about £10.99 to about £17.20: the CTP3, the Jorgensen, the Amazon Basics No. 4 and the Spear CSP4. The middle band is about £23.85 to about £50.42. The upper band is about £82.98 to about £117.23, the three RALI listings. You pay to avoid honing. The Evolution N at about £104.08 states four 48 mm chrome blades and is 4.6 from 35 reviews, with one UK review text in the file. The EVO B file is 3.1 from two non-UK reviews, and the title, style and blade count disagree. The 220 Monobloc has no star line. The top pick and best value point at the Amazon Basics No. 4 and the CTP3. They do not choose the type. An adjustable mouth is stated on the Amazon Basics No. 4, the CBP95 and the Stanley 1-12-020. The Stanley 220 file does not claim one.

Common questions

Is a Dictum plane one of these Amazon listings?
No listing in this folder is sold as a Dictum plane. Dictum’s own planes are on dictum.com, in euros, including a No. 62 jack and a pocket plane. These ASINs are Amazon Basics, Spear & Jackson, Jorgensen, Stanley, SUIZAN and RALI. The comparison name is a label for the set.
What is the Jorgensen mini actually for?
The Jorgensen 70700 is about 90 mm long, 250 g, with a 1.25 inch width line, at about £14.99 and 4.2 from 2,258 reviews. Reviews use it on door edges and small chamfers. One review says the iron does not sit square, and the width is too narrow for a full door bottom in one pass. It is an edge tool.
Do I have to sharpen a RALI?
The listings say you change or flip a chrome blade, in under 10 seconds, and they do not describe grinding that edge. Carbide for hardwood is a swap and is not in every box. The Evolution N line is four chrome blades. The EVO B line is one.
Why do cheap No. 4 reviews talk about fettling?
A blunt iron, and sometimes a sole that needs lapping, shows up in the notes. On the Spear & Jackson CSP4, a review of the instructions says sharpen before use. On the Amazon Basics No. 4, a minority of the 50 UK reviews read say the iron arrived blunt, and a repeated unflat sole is not the theme. Fettling here means hone and, where the reviews say so, lap.
Which listing has an adjustable mouth?
The Amazon Basics No. 4 states an adjustable mouth. So does the Spear & Jackson CBP95, and so do the bullets on the Stanley part 1-12-020. The Stanley pouch listing’s title says fully adjustable, while the item type says No. 9½, and the length fields disagree. The Stanley 220 file does not say the mouth is adjustable. Confirm the live amazon.co.uk bullet before you pay for that feature.
