Cordless ratchet for an engine bay

Updated: 23 October 2026

A 13 mm nut is facing you, and an ordinary ratchet handle hits the inner wing before it moves. A cordless ratchet for an engine bay earns its place when the socket can sit on that nut and your hand can stay clear. Neck length, head size and the battery decide the fit. A longer tool reaches a recessed bolt and, in the same reviews, gets called bulky. This page stays on access in our [cordless ratchet comparison](/hub/hand-tools/cordless-ratchet). What actually has to fit

The socket has to go on square, the head has to clear the casting, the neck has to reach your hand, and the battery has to miss hoses, the bulkhead and the bonnet stay. If any one fouls, the tool is the wrong shape. A hand ratchet fails here because the swing is the work. A short motorised head can sit on the nut and spin it. Einhell states hand-ratchet use. Most of the others do not. The buying order is the buying guide.

The long tools in this set

The lengths you can quote do not measure the same thing. Durofix at £129.99 states a 6 inch neck, 65 ft-lb and one G12 battery whose capacity is not on the UK listing. VTEK at £59.99 states a 4 inch neck, and the same listing’s item length is 10.2 cm. Quote both. Do not add them. TALOEYH at £48.99 states a 16 cm neck, also written as 6.3 inches. The brand is not DeWalt, and the UK review still wants a breaker bar. DURATECH at £89.99 states 395 mm as an overall length. One review calls that length bulky.

Short head and a battery you already own

The Einhell TE-RW 18/60 at £53.99 is the compact option: 820 g, no battery in the box, a stated 60 Nm, and a 3/8 to 1/2 adapter that adds length. There is no extended neck. It suits Power X-Change packs you already own, and the manual excludes commercial use. Capsste at £32.99 is 25 cm on the item-length line, with five ratings. Huini at £33.99 is the sample that talks about tight spaces, 4.3 from 174, with no neck figure. A slim claim without a neck is a tool you try on the bolt. Two small 12 V packs swap more easily than an 18 V slide on a heater hose.

Reach is not breakaway

You can reach the socket and still have a nut that will not move. A longer neck does not add a hammer. Durofix reviews say it will not undo tight bolts, and the TALOEYH review uses a breaker bar first. When the fastener is seized, the next tool is a breaker bar or an impact wrench. That split is the versus page. Most UK engine bolts are metric. The werktough imperial sockets, from 3/8 inch to 11/16 inch, are a poor match for a 13 mm flange. Huini, Capsste, VTEK, WORKPRO and DURATECH list metric sockets. Seat the one you need, then follow the order on the how to use page.

Common questions

Do I need an extended neck under the bonnet?
You need one when a compact head and your hand cannot both fit and still leave the socket square on the bolt. Many bracket nuts are close enough for a short head. Recessed bolts, timing covers and spark-plug wells are why extended necks exist. Snap-on’s UK page for a 6 inch model outside this set sells that length as access, at a stated 54 Nm. Measure your gap before you pay for reach you will then call bulky.
How long are the necks in this comparison?
Durofix states a 6 inch neck. VTEK states a 4 inch neck, and the same listing’s item length is 10.2 cm. TALOEYH states a 16 cm neck, also written as 6.3 inches. DURATECH states 395 mm as an overall length, not as a neck. The other rows say slim or compact, or they print a body length such as Capsste’s 25 cm, without a separate neck figure.
Will a 395 mm tool fit, or just reach?
It reaches when the bolt is a long way in. It fails to fit when 395 mm of tool has nowhere to lie, which is what one UK DURATECH review means by bulky and too long. Other DURATECH reviews call the same length versatile. The answer is the gap you measured, including the socket and your hand, not the word extended in the title.
Does the battery get in the way?
It does when the pack rests on a hose, the bulkhead or the bonnet stay. Two small 12 V packs are easier to swap and often slimmer than one large 18 V slide. Einhell’s price excludes the battery, so the pack you already own is part of the fit. A seller’s Makita or DeWalt claim does not shrink that pack.
Is a compact Einhell better in a small bay?
It is the compact option if you already own Power X-Change batteries and the bolt is close to the front of the engine. At £53.99 you get a stated 60 Nm and a 3/8 to 1/2 adapter, which itself adds length. There is no extended neck. The manual excludes commercial and industrial use. A deep recess still wants a stated neck from another row.
Will the long tool undo a rusted bolt once it reaches it?
Reaching the bolt and breaking it loose are different jobs. Durofix reviews say it will not undo tight bolts. The TALOEYH UK review still uses a breaker bar. A longer neck can make alignment harder, which Durofix notes in its own technical writing. If the nut has not moved, crack it with a hand tool or use an impact wrench, then spin with the ratchet.
What socket standard matters on a UK car in the bay?
Metric. A 10 mm, 13 mm or 15 mm flange is the usual case. The werktough kit’s imperial sockets are the mismatch, even on a short body. Kits from Huini, Capsste, VTEK, WORKPRO and DURATECH list metric sizes, often 10–17 mm, and DURATECH starts at 9 mm. Bring any size the box skips from your own rail.
