Band clamp for picture frames, mitres, PVA and V-nails

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have four mitred lengths of moulding, PVA in the bottle, and a webbing strap with plastic corners. A band clamp for picture frames pulls those four corners inward at once. It will not recut a short rail, and it will not stand in for the pin a framer drives after the glue has grabbed. This page stays on the frame, up to the point where a V-nail or a steel band takes over. Prices and the six amazon.co.uk listings are on the [band clamp comparison](/hub/hand-tools/band-clamp). What the strap does on a frame

A band clamp on a picture frame is a loop and four corner pieces. You seat each mitre in a jaw, lock the tail, and wind until the strap shrinks the perimeter. The pressure runs inward on all four corners at once. The strap cannot add wood. If one rail was cut a millimetre light, the opposite corner opens, and a harder wind bows a thin frame until the mitres gap. UK Picture Framing Supplies treats the strap as the hold while you pin, not as the joint. Wipe a thin film onto both faces first, because mitre end grain drinks glue.

Glue, then the decision to pin

Lion's joining guide and UK Picture Framing Supplies both start with PVA on the mitre. The strap only keeps the corners seated until that film grabs. Glue without a hold lets the mitre creep, and a hold without glue lasts only until you take the strap off. V-nails are the usual joint in UK framing shops. Driven into the back, they pull the mitre together. Both of those sources say the glue is what keeps the joint after the strap comes off. Skip the nail only on a small light frame that will sit on a shelf. UK Picture Framing Supplies calls V-nail height a rule of thumb: about two thirds to three quarters of the moulding depth. A taller nail breaks the face. The winding sequence is on how to use a band clamp.

Strap length and moulding shape

Add the four outside edges, then leave length for the jaws and the buckle, before you trust a 4 m label. The band clamp buying guide keeps the spare as a general rule. A 12 by 30 inch outside, about 305 mm by 762 mm, is about 2.1 m around, so a 4 m strap still has spare. Lion's 7 m steel band stops at a 1,665 mm square, which 4 m of webbing cannot close. On a Roman ogee, one UK review of a Stanley strap says the corners climbed. Pack each corner with mountboard, as The Framers Forum recorded in 2010, so the jaw presses a flat pad. If the strap rides up, ease it and repack.

When a framer changes method

Soho Frames changes method above about 30 mm of depth, and on oak and ash. Lion's guide points to a Hoffmann key for hard mouldings: a key in a routed slot, rather than a nail in end grain. Past that depth, more tension on the same strap does not change the timber. Lion's 7 m band is 10 mm steel, at £40 excluding VAT. All About Framing lists a similar strap at £65.99 including VAT, and Frank Herring lists one at £91.65. None of those three is in the six amazon.co.uk rows. Webbing straps in range are on the best band clamp page.

Common questions

Can a band clamp glue a mitred frame on its own?
It can hold four mitres while the PVA sets. It cannot correct a cut that is short or off 45 degrees. If the mitres fit dry and the moulding is thin and flat, wind the strap. Recut a short rail first.
Do I still need V-nails?
For a frame you will hang, ordinary UK practice says yes. The V-nail pulls the mitre, and the glue keeps it after the strap comes off. Skip the nail only on a small shelf frame. On oak or a deep moulding, that softwood nail may be the wrong fastener.
How big a frame fits a 4 m strap?
Add the outside edges, then leave room for the jaws and the buckle. About 12 by 30 inches outside is roughly 2.1 m around, if those inches are the moulding and not the glass. Lion's 7 m steel band reaches a 1,665 mm square, which 4 m of webbing will not close.
What happens on a profiled moulding?
The jaws climb a curve. In one UK review, a Stanley strap rode up a Roman ogee. Pack each corner with mountboard, as The Framers Forum described in 2010, so the jaw presses a flat pad. If the jaw still will not seat, a steel band is the closer tool.
When is a steel banding clamp the one framers buy?
Choose steel when the frame is large or deep and a 4 m webbing strap is too short for an overnight hold. Lion's 10 mm band is 7 m, at £40 excluding VAT. All About Framing lists a similar strap at £65.99 including VAT. You still use PVA. A small flat moulding does not need that spend.
What about oak or a deep moulding?
Soho Frames changes method above about 30 mm of depth, and on oak and ash. Lion points to a Hoffmann key, a fitted key in a routed slot, for hard mouldings. If you cannot rout keys, a framing shop is the sensible stop.
Should the strap stay on until the glue is hard?
Leave it on until the mitre no longer springs when you ease the tension. Lion does not print a number of hours. A 2010 Framers Forum thread described an overnight clamp on large or deep mouldings. Follow the PVA tin, and do not hang the frame the same afternoon.
