3/8 inch impact socket

Updated: 22 October 2026

The impact wrench is already on the bench, and the socket in your hand is black, so it looks as if it belongs on the square. Colour is the wrong permission. A 3/8 inch impact socket may go on that wrench only when the listing states chrome molybdenum for impact use. Black paint, or the word impact printed beside chrome vanadium, is not that statement. Our [3/8 inch socket set comparison](/hub/hand-tools/3-8-inch-socket-set) includes hand sets that look similar and are not the same. Why a hand socket shatters

A hand ratchet applies a steady pull. An impact wrench applies a rapid series of blows. Chrome vanadium is more likely to crack than to bend under those blows, and a cracked socket can throw a fragment. Cromwell says chrome vanadium hand sockets must not be used on impact wrenches because they may shatter. Wonkee Donkee says quality impact sockets are chrome molybdenum because that alloy deforms instead. The square only tells you the socket will start on the anvil. Draper, both WORKPRO sets, Silverline and LSLANSOON are hand kits. Impact-resistant, on the LSLANSOON listing, describes the box.

Black is a finish

Black phosphate, or black oxide, is there to resist corrosion. Wonkee Donkee notes that impact sockets are often black because a chrome plate can flake, and then warns that a cheap black socket can still be chrome vanadium. A matt socket is not an impact rating. The example in this sample is the CASOMAN 49-piece set, ASIN B07RGBXTQ2, at about £39.97. The finish is black phosphate. The title says impact. The steel line says chrome vanadium (50BV30). Two reviews say these are not impact sockets. Read the alloy line after you notice the colour.

What an impact listing should state

Look for chrome molybdenum, and for a sentence that the socket is for impact use. A KS Tools 3/8 inch hexagon impact socket, sold as a catalogue line rather than one of our eight sets, is described as chrome molybdenum with a phosphate finish, according to DIN 3129 / ISO 2725-2, and with the square to DIN 3121 / ISO 1174. They are not a certificate for the amazon.co.uk sets here. DIN 3122 and ISO 3315, printed on the Draper ratchet, cover hand wrenches. If the page never says chrome molybdenum, keep the socket on a hand ratchet. Which hand set to buy is the best 3/8 inch socket set page.

Three listings in this sample

TecoTek, ASIN B0G5Y8CYSS, at about £21.57, states both chrome molybdenum and impact use: 13 semi-deep 12-point sockets from 7 mm to 19 mm, and no ratchet. The amazon.co.uk listing has no star line, so this is not a tested pass. Other fields say hex shank and bit set, so you still check the stamp on arrival. CASOMAN, at about £39.97, puts impact in the title and chrome vanadium in the steel line, and two reviews reject the impact claim. Amazon Basics, ASIN B08XX3QJHT, at about £37.52, says chrome molybdenum. The title does not say impact, and the reviews disagree. The alloy without an impact statement is not a claim that the set is safe on any impact wrench.

If it is cracked, stop

Stop using a cracked socket or a ratchet that skips under load. The Health and Safety Executive lists projectiles as an eye hazard when equipment fails. At work, PUWER is the duty to use suitable equipment. At home you do not have that legal duty, and the fragment is the same. Orange high-voltage cabling is a garage job, and a chrome set is not a VDE set. Wheel nuts are a 1/2 inch question of drive as well as alloy, on the 3/8 vs 1/2 inch socket set page.

Common questions

Can a normal chrome socket go on a 3/8 inch impact wrench?
No. Cromwell says chrome vanadium hand sockets may shatter on an impact wrench and must not be used there. The 3/8 inch square only means the socket will fit the anvil. It does not mean the steel can take the blows. Use a socket whose listing states chrome molybdenum for impact use. A bright chrome finish is a clue to check the alloy, not a pass.
What should the steel line say?
Chrome molybdenum, together with a statement that the socket is for an impact wrench. Chrome vanadium is the hand alloy. If the page says chrome vanadium, or it never names an alloy, keep it off the wrench. A case described as impact-resistant is talking about the box, not the sockets inside it.
Which set in this sample states chrome molybdenum and impact use?
TecoTek’s 13-piece set at about £21.57 states forged chrome molybdenum and impact use, in semi-deep 12-point sockets from 7 mm to 19 mm. There is no amazon.co.uk star line, and other listing fields clash with a square-drive socket. It is the only row here that prints both the alloy and the impact use. It is not a lab approval.
Why is the CASOMAN title not enough?
The title says impact and the material line says chrome vanadium (50BV30). Two of the reviews read for this comparison reject the impact claim. A title can be wrong while the steel line is the one that matches a hand socket. Black phosphate on that set does not repair the disagreement. Treat it as a hand-socket case if you use it at all, and not on the wrench.
Is Amazon Basics an impact set because it says chrome molybdenum?
The material field says chrome molybdenum, and the title does not say impact. Reviews disagree about impact use. The alloy is the one associated with impact sockets, and the listing never makes the impact claim in the title. That is not enough to call the set safe on any 3/8 inch impact wrench.
