How to use a Weber barbecue without lighting it indoors

Updated: 16 October 2026

The coals are in, the lid is off, and the first question is whether the garage counts as outside because the door is open. It does not. This is how to use a Weber barbecue that is already in the garden: where it may stand, how the damper changes the heat, and where a gas fitting ends the job. The twelve listings are on the [Weber barbecue comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/weber-barbecue). The Products Compared editorial team used Weber’s UK pages, the listing bullets and NHS guidance on 15 October 2026. We did not time a cook. Light it only in the open

The NHS says barbecues or camping stoves indoors, and engines in a garage, can build up carbon monoxide, which has no smell. That covers a closed garage, a tent and a cabin. A door ajar is still the indoor case. Rain is a reason to wait or to move the food, not a reason to finish the cook under a roof. Set the grill where it can stay until the bowl is cold. The Lumin does not create a loophole. Its specification field says outdoor, the extract asks about indoor use and does not answer, and one review only says it is simple to switch on. Silence on that question is not permission. Gas is not a safer indoor fuel than charcoal. The same NHS line covers barbecues, not one type of barbecue. A concrete place is a patio slab with space around the bowl, not a wooden table against a fence, and not the boot of the car while it catches. The Go-Anywhere 1131004 bullets describe folding legs that lock the lid for carrying when it is packed. One review says there are no handles for moving it once it is alight. Put it down, then light it. The Smokey Joe’s Tuck-N-Carry lock is for the lid when you are transporting a cold grill.

Charcoal heat is the damper

On charcoal, the heat control you can use without inventing a method is the damper. Weber’s UK page for the Go-Anywhere 1131004 says you adjust the damper without lifting the lid, and that you close it to cut off oxygen and help extinguish the coals. The Smokey Joe bullets say the same shut-down: close the damper completely to extinguish. More air, with the damper open, is the hotter setting those pages are describing. Do not lift the lid every few minutes to check, or you throw away the control the damper was for. A lid thermometer, where the listing actually names one, is not a core temperature for the meat. The original kettles and the Q models name a lid thermometer. The compact kettles do not. We have not read a manual that converts lid air into a food temperature, so this page will not invent an offset. Use the thermometer as a sign that the lid air is rising or falling. Use a separate food probe for chicken, sausages and burgers. Shut down by closing the damper and leaving the grill where it is. The bullets do not tell you to tip the coals or to carry the bowl to a tap. Compact-kettle reviews recommend a chimney starter. It is not in the included-components field on these listings, so do not assume one is in the box. Adding lighter fluid to a half-lit kettle is how a lid flash happens. Which fuel you bought is on Weber charcoal or gas.

Ash, the first assembly, and the Smokey Joe handle

One-Touch cleaning is a named feature, not a habit you can assume. The Original Kettle Premium 57 cm and the Original 47 cm bullets say One-Touch sweeps ash into the catcher. The compact bullets name an ash catcher and do not use the One-Touch name. If you bought the £49.49 compact, you still empty ash, and you do not have the sweep those original bullets describe. Empty it when the bowl is cold. The first assembly is ordinary and still worth a slow pass. Premium reviews praise assembly and also mention soft handle nuts and a missing screw. Go-Anywhere 1131004 reviews describe assembly even though the field says no, and they repeat soft handle nuts. Tighten what is there. If a screw is missing, stop and use the return route rather than forcing a substitute that strips the thread. One Q 1100N review says the box had four instruction sets and none was in English. Match the pictures to the parts before you connect gas. The Smokey Joe handle is the part people overtighten. In the first 50 UK reviews, enamel flaking where the lid handle screws on is the main complaint, including buyers who say they did not overtighten it. This page will not invent a torque figure. Snug is the limit. If the enamel is already chipped around the screw on arrival, that is a condition issue under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, not a running-in period. Weber’s page lists the Smokey Joe at 5.48 kg. The amazon field says 4.5 g. Ignore the gram figure when you lift it.

Gas: canister, ignition, then stop

A gas Weber in this set is one burner. You do not set a hot side and a cool side by lighting half of it. Before the first cook, identify the canister the reviews actually name, and stop if yours is different. On the Q 1100N, reviews say the connection is for Weber’s small canisters, and one reviewer paid about £55 for an adapter to a normal cylinder. The canister is not in the included-components line. On the Traveler, one review names EN417 cartridges and says to check fittings before other cylinders. The Q 1200N review that mentions duration does not name the type. Do not borrow one model’s fitting for another. Ignition, where the listing gives you a push-button or an electric starter, is the start of the cook, not a test you repeat with the lid shut and gas flowing. If it does not light, turn the gas off and air the bowl before you try again. Forcing a hose that does not match, or a regulator that does not seat, is the point where DIY ends. Use Weber’s own adapter for that model, or return the grill. A house gas pipe, a chimney or a joint you have to lean on are not a Saturday fix. The Q 2100N lists an electric starter in the box and sells the Connect hub separately. The hub is not required to light the burner. The Lumin is the non-gas version of a simple start. Assembly is marked no, and the one review says you switch it on and wait. Keep it outdoors. Accessories for steam, smoke, keep-warm and defrost are sold separately, so the first cook is the grill mode, not a smoker. The plug type is not stated. If the plug is not a UK 13 amp BS 1363 plug, stop before you improvise an adaptor on a 2,300 watt load.

Common questions

How do you control heat on a charcoal Weber without lifting the lid?
Use the damper. Weber’s page for Go-Anywhere 1131004 says you adjust it without lifting the lid, and the bullets on that grill and on the Smokey Joe say closing it cuts off oxygen. Open is the hotter side of that control. Closed is the shut-down. A lid thermometer, on the models that name one, reads lid air. It is not a food-core figure, and this page does not invent a conversion.
How do the bullets say you put the coals out?
Close the damper completely and leave the grill where it stands. That sentence is on the Smokey Joe bullets and on Go-Anywhere 1131004, and Weber’s UK page for 1131004 says the same. Do not carry a lit portable to a tap, and do not move it into a garage because of rain. The NHS line on carbon monoxide still applies when the cook is almost finished.
Do you need a chimney starter, and is it in the box?
Compact-kettle reviews recommend one. It is not in the included-components field on these listings, so the box you receive may not contain it. Do not treat a reviewer’s light-up time as a specification. If you use a chimney, it is an extra purchase, and the grill still has to be outdoors before anything is lit.
What is One-Touch cleaning, and which listings name it?
One-Touch is the ash sweep into the catcher, named on the Original Kettle Premium 57 cm and the Original 47 cm. The compact kettles name an ash catcher and do not use that name. Empty ash when the bowl is cold. Buying the cheaper compact does not add the sweep the original bullets describe.
What should you do before the first gas cook?
Match the canister to the model in front of you. Q 1100N reviews describe Weber’s small canisters, not a normal patio cylinder. One Traveler review names EN417. If the hose does not seat, stop. Air the bowl if a light fails, then try again only with the gas off first. One Q 1100N review found no English instructions. Use the pictures, and do not guess a joint.
Can you finish the cook in a garage if it rains?
No. The NHS says barbecues indoors, and engines in a garage, can build up carbon monoxide. An open door does not turn the garage into outdoors. Wait, or serve what is already cooked. The same answer applies to a tent, a cabin and a summerhouse with the doors shut. Gas does not change that line.
When do you stop and use Weber’s adapter instead of forcing a hose?
Stop as soon as the fitting does not match. On the Q 1100N, one reviewer bought an adapter at about £55 rather than forcing a normal cylinder onto the small-canister hose. That adapter has to be the one for that connection. A house gas pipe, a cracked bowl or a joint you have to distort is a return or a professional, not a tighter spanner.
