OptiGrill vs plancha

Updated: October 2026

You are looking at two Tefal boxes that both say grill, and you cannot tell whether you want the hinged OptiGrill or a flat plancha. OptiGrill vs plancha is that choice: two plates and a programme, or one open surface you stand over and turn. The Products Compared editorial team compared the amazon.co.uk listings in this set on 15 October 2026. The contact example is the OptiGrill+ XL. The open plates are the Booster and the Giant Plancha. The table grill BG90C814 is a third type, an on/off grate, and it is not part of this contrast. Every listing is on the [Tefal electric grill comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/tefal-electric-grill).

Same brand, two cooking jobs

An OptiGrill is a contact grill. The lid comes down, both sides heat, and a thickness sensor runs a programme. The Plus XL in this scrape is £129.99, rated 4.7 from 2,766 reviews, with nine programmes and removable plates. Tefal UK describes about 800 cm². You are choosing whether you want that closed cook at all, not which OptiGrill plate is larger. A Tefal plancha is a griddle. The Booster is £129, listed at 2,200 W, with five settings, a boost area, and a stated 1,500 cm². The Giant Plancha is £91.49, listed at 2,300 W, with a claim of meals for up to 12 people and no square-centimetre figure. Neither has a rare-to-well-done lamp. The buying guide puts the table grill in the picture as well.

What cooks better on which

Use the OptiGrill for a steak, a burger, bacon, or a panini pressed on both sides. An egg will not behave on a ribbed contact plate the way it does on a plancha. Halloumi, peppers, and a pile of vegetables are the plancha job, because you can see them and move them. Booster reviews — none of the first 50 dated as United Kingdom — call the knob imprecise. Giant Plancha reviewers praise quick heat, and most of that sample is not British. Steps for the lamp and the frozen button are on the how to use a Tefal OptiGrill page.

Plates, coatings, and the dishwasher line

OptiGrill plates come off, and current Tefal UK shop text says they are PTFE-coated. That is not a PFAS-free claim, and this comparison did not test the coating. Plancha reviews say the plate stays on the body. The Booster listing says the griddle is dishwasher-safe except the electric part. Reviews disagree: a tray symbol, a plate that does not separate, and at least one return. The Booster listing says PTFE-free. That line was not checked on a UK unit here. The Giant Plancha listing says lead-free, PFAS-free, and PFOA-free, the same kind of listing claim. In this scrape the Plus XL is £129.99 and the Booster £129. The Giant Plancha is £91.49.

Which to buy, with a condition

Buy the OptiGrill if you will not turn the food and you want a plate that comes off. Buy a plancha for a shared flat top. The Giant Plancha is the lower price. The Booster is the one with a stated 1,500 cm² and a boost zone, and a 120 V field that conflicts with 2,200 W and was not confirmed. Neither plancha has a solid UK-dated review sample in the first 50. The SuperGrill opens to 180 degrees at £114.99. Several UK reviews say the top plate sags on a one-sided hinge. That is the condition on using it as both. Who should take the Plus XL, and who should step down to the GC3050, is the best Tefal electric grill page. Common questions

Which one sears a steak without turning?
The OptiGrill. The lid heats both sides, and the Plus XL’s programmes include red meat. The lamp is still not a thermometer for a burger. A plancha can sear a steak, but you turn it and you have no colour sequence.
Which is better for eggs, halloumi, and a crowd around one plate?
The plancha. Eggs and halloumi need a flat surface you can reach with a spatula. The Booster’s stated area is about 1,500 cm². The Giant Plancha’s “up to 12” line has no measured area.
Which plates come off?
OptiGrill plates are listed as removable. Reviews of the Booster and the Giant Plancha say the surface stays fixed. A dishwasher claim on the Booster has been disputed by people who found the plate would not separate.
Does a plancha have a rare-to-well-done lamp?
No. The Booster and the Giant Plancha use five thermostat settings. The colour sequence belongs to the OptiGrill. You still do not serve a burger rare because the lamp says rare.
Is the Booster PTFE-free while the OptiGrill is PTFE-coated?
The Booster listing says PTFE-free, and current Tefal UK shop text for OptiGrill plates says PTFE-coated. Those lines are not interchangeable, and the Booster wording was not confirmed on a UK unit here.
Why do plancha reviews talk about dishwasher symbols?
The Booster listing says dishwasher-safe except the electric part, and reviewers report a tray symbol that says otherwise, or a plate that does not come off. Read the symbol on the tray you receive.
Which is cheaper in this scrape?
The Giant Plancha is £91.49. The Booster is £129 and the Plus XL is £129.99. The Elite is £198.80 and it is still not a plancha. Prices on amazon.co.uk move.
