How to fit a chimney cooker hood

Updated: October 2026

You have taken down the old hood and found a wall hole smaller than the outlet on the new model. That is the point to stop and measure, not to hang the canopy and solve the duct afterwards. Learning how to fit a chimney cooker hood means planning the clearance, wall route, electrics and decorative covers in the right order. This guide covers the sequence for a typical 60 cm wall-mounted hood. Use the exact hood and hob manuals for dimensions. Compare model outlets and box contents on our [stainless steel chimney cooker hood page](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/stainless-steel-chimney).

Measure the installation before making holes

Confirm the width, required height, outlet diameter and distance from canopy to ceiling. Mark the hob centreline with a level, then position the brackets from the new template rather than reusing old holes. Use the greater distance required by the hood manual and the hob manual, particularly above gas. Our separate guide explains cooker hood height above a hob. Check whether the decorative chimney reaches the ceiling. The COMFEE' gesture model states 485–820 mm and CIARRA CAS6201A states 573–940 mm. CBCS6201 lists two 40 cm extensions, while SNDOAS has two 300 mm sections and reviews that report short coverage. SNDOAS lists a 150 mm tube, and AEG’s UK page states a 150 mm outlet for DKB5660HM. Do not pick a 100 or 102 mm universal kit merely because it is widely sold. Reducing a larger outlet can restrict airflow, raise noise and, for some brands, affect warranty terms.

Plan the core, duct and outside flap

For a new route, check both faces for cables, pipes and structural risks. Core drilling masonry is often worth hiring out, especially through a cavity wall or at height. The opening must suit the sleeve and duct, not just the grille face. BuildWiz gives roughly a 160 mm core for 150 mm duct and recommends a slight outward fall, but verify this against your kit and wall. Fit the specified external grille or cowl with a gravity flap that opens under airflow and closes when the fan stops. Use rigid, smooth duct for the main run, kept short and with few bends. Flexible aluminium tube suits a short final connection if it is opened fully and kept free of kinks. Luxair’s guidance limits flexible hose to about 1.5 m. That is not a rule for these seven hoods, but a compressed 2 m foil tube is not a straight rigid run. See the ducted or recirculating comparison before you core a wall you may not need.

Hang the canopy, connect and test

Use the fixings specified for the wall type and hood weight. The listings range from 5.3 kg for the pyramid COMFEE' to 15.1 kg for the AEG. Plasterboard alone may not provide a masonry fixing. If the manual requires two people, follow it. Mark the centreline, canopy points and chimney bracket from the actual template. Hang and secure the canopy before joining the duct, without trapping the cable or crushing the outlet. Connect a full-diameter duct and avoid a sharp bend immediately above the spigot. Fit the outside grille, confirm the flap moves freely, and test every speed and light before the covers hide the joint. Run the hood on maximum and watch the outside flap. Check that the duct does not collapse, rattle or leak. This is not an airflow measurement. If the hood will recirculate, fit the exact carbon filter and leave a clear outlet from the chimney cover. The pyramid COMFEE' needs CF04 bought separately, and CAS6201A lists CBCF002X2 separately.

Fit the covers last and know when to stop

Slide the decorative chimney on only after the duct, flap, controls and lighting have passed the first checks. The cover hides the joint. Protect the stainless steel, then remove protective film so it is not trapped under fasteners. Only CBCS6201 explicitly lists a UK plug. Use a qualified electrician for fixed-wiring alterations and a Gas Safe registered engineer for any gas work. Stop if the wall route is uncertain, a large reducer is needed, the specified fixings cannot be achieved or the manuals conflict.

Common questions

Do I core the wall before hanging the hood?
Plan and mark the entire installation first. Creating the duct route before final mounting often gives better access and prevents masonry dust falling into a new appliance, but follow the model instructions. Do not core until you have checked the clearance, outlet diameter, hidden services and outside exit.
Can I use foil tube for the whole duct run?
Foil tube can form a short connection, but a long compressed or kinked run adds resistance and noise. Smooth rigid duct at the correct diameter is generally preferable for the main route. Do not assume the included foil tube represents the best layout for every kitchen.
What if the old duct is 100 mm and the hood outlet is 150 mm?
Do not reduce it automatically. Check the manual and consider enlarging the route, because a reducer can lower airflow and increase noise. If enlarging is impossible, ask the manufacturer or a ventilation installer whether the proposed system remains suitable.
How do I test the gravity flap?
Before fitting the chimney covers, run the hood at maximum and observe the outside grille. The flap should open without sticking and close when the fan stops. Also listen for rattling or whistling and check accessible duct joints for leakage.
Who should connect a fused spur?
A qualified electrician should handle new or altered fixed wiring. A hood supplied with a UK plug may use a suitable existing socket if its manual permits, but that does not turn a required fused connection or circuit alteration into DIY plug work.
Can I extend decorative chimney sections?
Use an extension made or approved for the exact model where available. Before ordering, calculate the cover distance at the correct hob clearance. Moving the hood too high merely to make a short chimney appear to fit can reduce capture and conflict with the manual.
