Kettle barbecue buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are choosing a round charcoal cooker for a UK garden, and the listing cannot agree with itself. The bullets say porcelain. A spec line says nylon. This kettle barbecue buying guide is the order of checks that change the cook, and the lines you can ignore. Peter F. read the nine amazon.co.uk listings in this set and public UK sources. We did not run a lab cook. Shelf prices move, so the pounds sit on the [round barbecue comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/round-barbecue). What you are actually buying

A round barbecue is a bowl. A kettle adds a domed lid and a path for air, so you can cook with the lid down. The Weber kettles, House of Home, HOMION and PREMZO describe a lid. The BSDLZCH pan, about 28 cm across and 10 cm high, and the IRONMAX hibachi, a 9.8 inch cast-iron surface, do not. Both can sear a small piece in the open. Neither holds a closed roast. Whether 37 cm, about 45–47 cm or 57 cm fits the meal is on what size kettle barbecue.

The checks that change the cook

Work down the page in one order. A lid you can close. Two vents you can still move while the metal is hot. An ash path you can empty without tipping the cooker. Only the Weber Original 47 cm bullets, ASIN B0FTZML2QD, state a One-Touch sweep and a built-in lid thermometer. The Compact bullets name dampers and an ash catcher, and they do not name a thermometer. Take the area from the bullets: the Compact 57 cm says 2,342 cm², while another field on that page says 57 square centimetres. Then decide how it moves, wheels and a lid hook, or the Smokey Joe’s Tuck-N-Carry lock on a 37 cm bowl.

Lines on the listing you should not believe

The Compact 57 cm, B0FTZKKJDQ, lists nylon, 57 square centimetres, 3.77 kg, and 61 × 61 × 24.8 cm beside 63 × 57 × 98 cm. The bullets say porcelain enamel and 2,342 cm². The Compact 47 cm spec lines say plastic and ceramic, against porcelain bullets and 1,548 cm². The Compact 47 cm shows 4.5 from 377 reviews and the Compact 57 cm shows 4.5 from 378, and the written text overlaps. Whether porcelain is worth the gap over a £29 bowl is on Weber kettle or cheap kettle.

Cover, enamel and the first month

Only the HOMION and PREMZO bullets in this set state a protective cover. A carry case is not a weather cover. More than one Smokey Joe review reports enamel flaking at the handle. One House of Home buyer could not fit the wheel bolt. HOMION reviews mention a sharp rim, an ash tray that falls off, and a grate that cracked on a first wash. Citizens Advice describes the 30-day short-term right to reject under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Named picks by job are on best round charcoal barbecue.

Common questions

Does a round barbecue need a lid?
It needs a lid if you want to cook with the lid down. The dome holds heat and gives the vents something to control, which is why Ideal Home treats a lid as a basic check. Weber, House of Home, HOMION and PREMZO describe one. The BSDLZCH pan and the IRONMAX hibachi do not. Use those two only for an open sear.
Are two vents worth checking?
Check where they sit, not only whether a bullet mentions them. Weber UK treats the bowl vent as the inlet and the lid vent as the outlet, and says not to close both while food is cooking. A HOMION review says the lower vent is inside the drum. A damper you can move from outside is the one that changes the cook.
What is an ash catcher for?
It holds spent fuel so you are not tipping a hot bowl onto the patio. The Compact bullets name an ash catcher. The Original 47 cm bullets name a One-Touch sweep into a removable catcher. A tray that falls off, a HOMION complaint, does not do that job. Empty it when the cooker is cold, and put the ash on soil, not into a plastic bin.
Should I trust a material line that says nylon or plastic?
Trust the bullets when they conflict with a spec field. On the Compact 57 cm the bullets say porcelain enamel and 2,342 cm². A spec field says nylon and 57 square centimetres. The Original’s spec line says plastic, and the Compact 47 cm lines say plastic and ceramic, against porcelain bullets. The Smokey Joe’s 39.8 watt line is the same noise on charcoal.
Is a lid thermometer the same as a food probe?
A lid thermometer reads air in the dome. A food probe reads the middle of the food. The Food Standards Agency wants burgers, sausages and kebabs at 70°C for two minutes or an equivalent, checked with a clean probe. Only the Original 47 cm bullets state a built-in lid thermometer. Smoke & Soil’s 20–30°C gap is their rule of thumb, not a figure we measured.
Does a cover in the box matter in a UK winter?
It matters when the kettle stays outside from October to March. Only the HOMION and PREMZO bullets here state a cover. The Weber listings and the House of Home bullets do not. A carry case is not a weather cover. If the listing is silent, buy a cover separately or store the kettle dry. A cover will not fix a vent you cannot reach while the fire is lit.
