BBQ on a balcony in the UK

Updated: 23 October 2026

You live in a flat and the listing says portable. Portable is the handle, not permission. A bbq on a balcony in the UK is a fire-service ban, including a mini kettle with the lid shut. This page names no balcony-safe charcoal model. The [mini kettle barbecue comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/mini-kettle-barbecue) is for a garden or patio. Lighting there is on the [how to use a kettle barbecue](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/mini-kettle-barbecue/sub/mini-kettle-barbecue-how-to-use) page. Peter F. used Fire England, GOV.UK, the NHS, London Fire Brigade, Sandwell and nidirect. We did not test one on a balcony. A purchase through our links may earn a commission. Balconies are a fire problem

Fire England says never barbecue indoors, in a tent, or on a balcony, and never light one with petrol or paraffin. Devon and Somerset and Greater Manchester give the same balcony warning. The diameter is absent from those sentences. A 37 cm tabletop and a 47 cm Weber are both charcoal and both a source of embers above someone else’s window. The lid does not change the advice. Embers, a hot bowl and smoke in a tight slot remain, lid open or shut. The NHS rules out a barbecue indoors or in a tent, and London Fire Brigade says an extinguished barbecue can keep producing carbon monoxide for hours. If the balcony is the only outdoors you have, do not buy from this comparison. The buying guide and the best picks assume a legal place to stand the bowl. The table is that garden ranking, not a balcony shortlist.

Tents, caravans, and coals that are out

Cooking in a tent porch, or carrying the kettle under canvas because of rain, is the use the NHS tells you to avoid. London Fire Brigade’s point is the hours after you think the fire is out. Grey coals can still give off carbon monoxide, and a tent holds that gas. A caravan and a closed awning are the same kind of space. nidirect warns about carbon monoxide when camping, caravanning or boating, in line with the NHS. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are in scope. If someone near the kettle struggles to breathe, is confused, unconscious, weak, or has chest or muscle pain, call 999. For milder symptoms, get into fresh air and use NHS 111. Leave the kettle where it is. Carrying it into the tent repeats the exposure.

Smoke control does not mean what people think

A smoke control area limits smoke from chimneys in buildings. GOV.UK says you can use an outdoor barbecue in a smoke control area. A garden charcoal kettle can still be used. That page is not a balcony permission, and it does not make charcoal illegal across the town. The garden cook can be allowed while the balcony cook stays forbidden by fire-service advice. Nuisance is separate. GOV.UK’s enforcement guide for England says an abatement notice can follow if outdoor smoke affects other people. A lawful garden cook is not a promise that weekend smoke into the flat upstairs will go unchallenged. It does not move the kettle onto a balcony.

A lease can be stricter

Sandwell Council tells its tenants not to use or store a barbecue on a balcony. That is Sandwell’s housing instruction, not a statute for every landlord. Ask your landlord, in writing if you can, what the agreement allows for use and storage. A silent clause does not overrule Fire England. A real garden sends you back to lighting. A balcony-only flat means this charcoal category is the wrong product. This page does not offer gas as a balcony method.

Common questions

Can I use a mini kettle on a balcony if the lid is on?
No. Fire England says never on a balcony, with no exception for a closed lid, a 37 cm bowl, or a kettle you can carry upstairs. The lid keeps heat in. It does not remove embers, a hot shell, or carbon monoxide beside the flat. Devon and Somerset and Greater Manchester give the same warning. If the balcony is the only place it would stand, do not buy.
Does a smoke control area ban charcoal?
No. GOV.UK says outdoor barbecues can be used in a smoke control area. Those rules limit chimney smoke. They leave a charcoal kettle for garden use and do not authorise it on a balcony. The balcony ban is fire-service advice. A town can allow garden cooking and still rule out the balcony.
Can I finish the cook and carry it into the tent?
No. The NHS says not to use a barbecue in a tent, and London Fire Brigade says carbon monoxide can continue for hours after the fire is out. Cooling coals still sit in a kettle you think is finished. Leave the bowl in the open until the ash is cold, and only where it was legal to light it.
What about a caravan awning?
Treat a caravan, and an awning closed around the kettle, like a tent. nidirect warns about carbon monoxide for camping, caravanning and boating in Northern Ireland, in line with the NHS. These sources give no measured safe gap under canvas. If the awning is the only shelter, wait for open air or skip charcoal.
Can the council still complain if outdoor use is allowed?
Yes, when the smoke is a nuisance. GOV.UK allows an outdoor barbecue in a smoke control area and, in the England enforcement guidance, an abatement notice when outdoor smoke affects other people. On a balcony the earlier problem is the fire-service ban.
My tenancy is silent. Who do I ask?
Ask the landlord or housing association whether a barbecue is allowed, and where it may be stored. Put it in writing if you can. Sandwell tells its own tenants not to use or store one on a balcony. That is local housing policy. A silent clause does not overrule Fire England.
What are the emergency signs?
Call 999 if someone exposed to the fumes has breathing difficulty, confusion, unconsciousness, weakness, or chest or muscle pain. The NHS lists those as emergency carbon monoxide symptoms. For milder symptoms, get outside and use NHS 111. Leave the kettle outside. If the fire is beyond a bucket of water, call 999 for the fire as well.
