Propane regulator for a gas BBQ in the UK

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are holding a regulator and a gas bottle, and the listing said both clip-on and 37 mbar without showing the collar. A propane regulator for gas BBQ UK use matches three things: the pressure the appliance expects, the gas in the cylinder, and the valve on that cylinder. Infrared does not change those rules. This page is fittings and vapour offtake for the seven infrared gas grills, not a burner ranking. The rows sit on the [infrared gas grill comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/infrared-gas-grill). Layout belongs on the [infrared gas barbecue buying guide](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/infrared-gas-grill/sub/infrared-gas-grill-buying-guide). Collar types follow Calor’s bottle pages, the Grill2Go manual, and the amazon.co.uk fitting lines, dated 21 October 2026.

37 mbar is the pressure, not the collar

Calor sells a 27 mm clip-on patio regulator at 37 mbar and about 1.5 kg/h for green patio cylinders, and a POL screw-on, code 601229, at the same pressure for red propane cylinders. The millibar figure matches. The collar does not. A POL screw-on will not click onto patio gas, and a clip-on will not seat on a red POL valve. Clip-on and 37 mbar in one CosmoGrill bullet are two claims, not a photo of the collar. Match the fitting you can see to the bottle you own. Butane fades near about −2°C, so patio propane is the usual outdoor gas once evenings turn cold. Do not force butane onto a propane regulator. Brush soapy water on every joint, and keep the barbecue outdoors in the open.

Three supplies: patio, POL, and EN417

Patio gas uses green 5 kg and 13 kg bottles with a 27 mm clip-on valve. Red propane bottles use a POL screw-on valve. Portable cartridges follow EN417. The X200 bullets say a 16.4 ounce disposable cylinder sold separately. The Grill2Go manual puts that as EN417 cartridges not over 500 g, at 2.8 kW, with the supplied regulator only. A Char-Broil patio adapter for 27 mm bottles is a separate accessory, not in this ASIN’s components line. Do not assume a patio bottle will run the X200 out of the carton. A CosmoGrill trolley is the patio or POL case, depending on the regulator that arrives. The word infrared does not choose the valve.

What these listings print, and what they do not

Read the included-components line before the marketing bullets. A components field that names a regulator without a pressure still leaves the collar open. The Platinum 4+2 listings name a propane regulator and hose in included components, while the bullets still say clip-on and 37 mbar. The Yamara 4+2 prints those bullet claims but lists only a lid, thermometer and tool holder, so the regulator is not confirmed in the box. The uncovered 6+2 claims a regulator in a bullet only. The covered 6+2 names cover, regulator and hose and prints no pressure. The Oopsiou listing states neither pressure nor bottle size. A conflicting kilowatt line does not choose the valve. First lighting after a correct match is on how to use an infrared gas grill.

Bottle size, offtake and icing

Calor’s rule of thumb puts a 5 kg patio bottle with about three burners and a 13 kg bottle from four burners upward, and rates a 13 kg bottle’s offtake at about 15 kW. CosmoGrill bullets here claim about 21.2 kW or 27.7 kW across all burners. That is not a Calor test of these grills. A small bottle can be asked for more vapour than that guidance if every burner runs hard. One UK review on the uncovered 4+2 warns that a grill near 21 kW will ice a small cylinder. That is one comment. If the bottle ices, shut burners down and use a larger bottle or fewer burners at once. Do not back off a regulator screw. Fixed outdoor pipework is a Gas Safe job under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. Model choice after that is on the best infrared gas BBQ page.

Common questions

Will a 37 mbar regulator click onto a green patio bottle?
Only if it is a 27 mm clip-on patio regulator. A POL screw-on can also be rated 37 mbar and will not click onto patio gas. Read the collar, not only the millibar stamp.
What is the difference between clip-on and POL if both say 37 mbar?
Clip-on seats on the 27 mm patio valve. POL screws into red propane valves. Pressure can match while the mechanical fit does not. Calor rates both styles at 37 mbar and about 1.5 kg/h.
Can I run the X200 from a patio bottle?
Not from the amazon included list alone. The listing wants a disposable cylinder. The manual is EN417 up to 500 g with the supplied regulator. A patio adapter is a separate Char-Broil part, not shown in this ASIN’s components line.
Is a 5 kg bottle enough for a 4+2 or a 6+2?
Calor’s thumb rule points 5 kg toward about three burners and 13 kg toward four or more. CosmoGrill claims near 21–27 kW can outrun a small bottle’s offtake if every burner is open. Prefer a larger bottle and fewer burners at once if the cylinder ices.
What is an EN417 cartridge, and why does the listing say 16.4 ounces?
EN417 is the disposable cartridge pattern Char-Broil specifies for the Grill2Go, not over 500 g. The 16.4 ounce line is the same portable-cylinder idea in US ounces. Buy the cartridge the manual allows, not a random picnic bottle.
When is this a Gas Safe job rather than a hose job?
When you want fixed outdoor pipework, when a cylinder valve is damaged, or when a joint still leaks after a correct remake. Portable hose changes with the right parts stay a consumer fitting task. House gas does not.
