Which gas regulator for a BBQ

Updated: 23 October 2026

The old regulator has cracked or will not click, and the bottle may be green patio gas, a red screw cylinder, or a blue butane clip. Which gas regulator for a BBQ is not a brand question yet. It is the number on the barbecue's data plate, then the shape of the valve, then the date on the regulator and the condition of the hose. The [Gas regulator](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/gas-regulator) comparison holds the eight amazon.co.uk listings in this set, with prices in GBP. This page is the order of those checks. We did not measure outlet pressure in a lab, and a qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Read the plate first

UK barbecue propane is normally regulated to 37 mbar. Liquid Gas UK puts butane regulators at 28–30 mbar. GOV.UK lists a nominal 37 mbar for propane (Group P) and a nominal 29 mbar for butane (Group B) at the appliance inlet. Those are supply figures, not a reading from this basket. Flogas is plain that the two regulators are not interchangeable. If the plate asks for 37 mbar propane, a butane clip-on is the wrong class. A 30 mbar EN 1949 caravan regulator, and a Campingaz fitting, sit outside this shortlist. Calor and Adventure AOS0036 print 37 mbar on a 27 mm clip-on. Both JD Brands POL listings print 37 mbar. The two HowseHold 27 mm pages and the Cofan butane page do not print millibar. Low pressure is not 37 mbar. If the plate is worn, use the butane or propane regulator page before you assume the blue bottle and the green bottle share a part.

Match the cylinder valve

Patio gas is propane at 37 mbar on a 27 mm clip-on, including the 5 kg and 13 kg sizes named on the Calor and Adventure listings. You push until it clicks. POL is the left-hand screw on many standard UK propane cylinders. Clockwise is the wrong way to tighten it. The JD Brands PGR01 listing at about £9.99 says POL only, and it does not fit a 27 mm patio bottle. Butane on a standard UK cylinder is a 21 mm clip-on, not 27 mm and not POL. A jumbo Irish butane regulator is another size again. The JD Brands butane title says 21 mm. Several reviewers say a 20 mm unit arrived. Twenty millimetres is not twenty-one. The Cofan listing, model 41007762 at about £11.69, prints no valve size. Do not buy an adaptor to force a cross-fit. Once the valve is obvious, follow how to fit a BBQ gas regulator. If colour and valve disagree, use the supplier's label.

Age, mark, and hose

Liquid Gas UK's sheet 39 points at BS EN 16129 and a life of about ten years. Look for the mark and a date on the body. UK safety standards without a number, which is what the JD Brands POL screw page says, has not shown you EN 16129. Calor's own specification names EN 16129, 37 mbar, 1.5 kg/h, and an 8 mm nozzle. The amazon.co.uk Calor listing prints 37 mbar, 27 mm, part 601228, and an 8 mm nozzle, and it does not print kilograms per hour. Do not fill that gap yourself. Rubber hose to BS 3212, BS EN 1763-1, or BS EN 16436-1 is replaced at five years, or sooner if it is cracked, soft, or stiff. A new regulator does not renew an old hose. The HowseHold kit at about £16.99 names a 2 m hose and clips, while one bullet says the hose is not included, and it still does not print millibar. If the date stamp is unreadable, replace the regulator.

What this comparison can and cannot tell you

The main table shows which pages print 37 mbar, which name 27 mm or POL, and which leave pressure empty. Recorded prices run from about £8.99 to about £16.99. Stars, from 1,114 reviews down to five, are not a pressure test. A blank millibar cell is not secretly 37 mbar, and a 21 mm title is not proof every unit is 21 mm. Capacity is 1.5 kg/h only where a listing prints it. If two rows match the valve and only one prints the millibar on your plate, that printed figure decides it.

Common questions

Which regulator goes on a green patio cylinder?
A green Calor-style patio cylinder uses the 27 mm propane clip-on, normally at 37 mbar, not a POL screw and not a 21 mm butane clip. Calor and Adventure AOS0036 print both figures. The HowseHold pages print 27 mm and do not print millibar.
Is patio gas the same as propane?
Patio gas, in Calor's UK map, is propane on the 27 mm clip at 37 mbar. It is not the screw-cylinder valve.
Can one regulator fit both butane and propane bottles?
Not across the valves in this comparison. A 27 mm propane clip, a POL propane screw, and a 21 mm butane clip are three fittings. A similar hose tail does not make them one part. A 30 mbar EN 1949 caravan regulator is a fourth case.
How do I tell POL from a 27 mm clip-on?
The 27 mm regulator pushes on and clicks. POL screws on, left-hand, so it tightens anticlockwise. The handwheel is still POL, not a clip with a handle. The JD Brands screw listing states that it does not fit 27 mm patio bottles.
Should I buy the hose at the same time?
Buy a hose if the rubber is five years old or cracked, soft, or stiff. A sound, in-date hose does not need replacing with the regulator. The HowseHold kit is the only title that includes 2 m of hose, and one bullet says the hose is absent.
