Electric kebab knife for a takeaway

Updated: 23 October 2026

You run a UK takeaway, the cone is on, and staff are about to shave it with an electric kebab knife. The disc is open and the lead runs near a wet cloth. The word commercial does not train anyone or clean the tool. In a shop the knife is work equipment and food-contact equipment at once. This page is those duties. It does not rank the seven rows in the [Electric kebab knife comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/electric-kebab-knife). The notes are public UK guidance from 20 October 2026, not a hygiene rating. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the shop owes its staff

If staff use the knife, PUWER asks for suitable equipment, trained people, guarding as far as the work allows, and a way to isolate the tool. £88.88 and £349.99 are equal under that duty until you check the knife. None of the seven pages prints UKCA. Show the guard, the shoe, the switch, and how to isolate the knife. The hand order is on the how to use page. Your manual wins if it differs. The £349.99 generic says commercial and prints no wattage. Zenith Bloom at £88.88 names cooked lamb and chicken, a 3 m lead, and a guard. That is a limit, not an approval. Listing checks are on the buying guide.

The open blade

The disc has to meet the cone, so a doner knife cannot wear a full box. Guarding means the fitted guard, a shoe that sets the gap, and hands kept off the edge. Do not remove the guard to speed the pass. Zenith Bloom, iBLENDAR, JUXDZISHW, and the £349.99 trimmer name a guard or a cover. AYCDL and the £192.99 generic do not. Do not infer one from a photo. Isolate the knife before you set the shoe, change a disc, or wash it. The lead stays off the blade. Bone and frozen meat stay off unless that knife’s manual allows them. AYCDL’s bone line is a bullet. A stand in the £349.99 box is a place to put the tool down, not a guard. Isolation is the plug out or the pack out.

The lead and the test interval

HSE sheet CAIS12 suggests a formal visual inspection and a combined test every 12 months for portable kitchen equipment. That figure comes from IET guidance. It is not an offence on day 366. A taped lead, a cracked adaptor, or a cord through the disc has already failed a user check. Zenith Bloom’s 3 m lead can be damaged out of sight. None of the seven states a BS 1363 plug. Do not file the pins. JUXDZISHW’s review of 21 September 2026, one battery dead, takes that knife off the pass. That note is not a certificate.

Cleaning as a food rule

Chapter V of retained Regulation (EC) 852/2004 requires food-contact equipment to be cleaned. Where you claim disinfection, GOV.UK points to BS EN 1276 or BS EN 13697. iBLENDAR says hand wash only. Do not immerse the motor. Unplug, wash the blade and the shoe, and wipe the housing. After the last cone, put the guard back. Keep this knife on the cooked face. Note the day, the person, and that the body was not submerged. Counter or truck supply is on the corded or cordless page.

Common questions

Is a £90 amazon knife legal in a takeaway?
Price does not decide. PUWER still requires suitable equipment, training, and guarding, at £88.88 or £349.99. No listing here prints UKCA. If the plug or the manual means you cannot use it safely, it is the wrong tool for the pass.
Do I have to PAT test it every year?
CAIS12 suggests a formal inspection and a combined test every 12 months. The interval still depends on risk. A taped lead fails today. A competent person does the formal test. A glance at the plug is not a PAT test.
Who is allowed to use it?
People you have trained on this knife: the guard, a stopped thickness setting, cooked meat only, and isolation before a blade change or a wash. A job title is not training. Keep it off the pass if the guard is missing.
How does guarding work if the blade must touch the meat?
The disc stays partly exposed. Guarding is the fitted cover, the shoe, and a system that keeps hands and the lead off the edge. It is not a sealed box, and it is not a guard left in a drawer.
What cleaning record do I need?
A short note that the food-contact parts were cleaned: date, person, disc and shoe washed, body wiped, and the disinfectant if you claim BS EN 1276 or BS EN 13697. Isolate the knife first. Hand wash does not mean a dishwasher.
Does commercial on the title mean it is built for a Saturday night?
No. The £349.99 row uses that word and omits wattage, voltage, and reviews. A busy service needs a proved supply, a guard on the tool, trained staff, and a clean-down you can show.
What if the lead is taped?
Take the knife out of service. A taped lead has failed the user check. Do not add tape and do not hand it to the closer. A competent person repairs the flex. The same applies to a split adaptor or a cracked pack.
Does this page tell me which ASIN to buy?
No. Use the comparison and the buying guide for guard, thickness, and supply. Use this page for whether your shop can train, guard, inspect, and clean the knife you buy.
