Weber charcoal barbecue buying guide

Updated: October 2026

Nine Weber listings can look similar, yet they cover three different jobs. This Weber charcoal barbecue buying guide helps you decide whether the barbecue will travel, how many people you feed, and whether a thermometer and easier ash removal justify paying more. Start there before comparing colours or star averages. A stand kettle with wheels is meant to remain in a garden or on a suitable outdoor patio, while a Smokey Joe or Go-Anywhere is shaped to be lifted and packed. Our [main Weber charcoal barbecue comparison](/hub/grill-accessories/weber-charcoal-barbecue) holds the current GBP prices and specification table; this page explains the decision order.

How many people, and does it have to travel?

A 47 cm kettle provides a stated 1,548 cm² cooking area and is described for four to six people. A 57 cm kettle increases that to 2,342 cm² and six to eight people. Those headcounts are listing guidance, not guaranteed portions. Large steaks, vegetables and bread can use more grate space than six burgers. Portables are not a third kettle diameter. The 37 cm Smokey Joe offers 948 cm², while Go-Anywhere 1131004 has 1,032 cm² and is described for two to four people. They suit travel because they weigh about 5.48 kg and 6.78 kg, not because they replace a family kettle. Our kettle or portable comparison examines that choice.

Compact or Original at that diameter?

Once you know the diameter, decide which controls you will actually use. The Compact 47 cm, model 1502054, was £49.49 on 15 October 2026. Its bullets name an ash catcher, stand, wheels and lid hook, but not a lid thermometer or One-Touch cleaning. The Original 47 cm, model 1502192, was £111.24 and adds a thermometer, One-Touch cleaning into a removable ash catcher, plus tool hooks. Both still state 1,548 cm². At 57 cm the Compact was £99.99 without a thermometer named in its bullets. The Original Kettle Premium was £239 and adds a thermometer, One-Touch system and hinged cooking grate, so you can add charcoal without lifting the whole grate.

Cooking area you can trust

Use the title, product bullets and the model-specific Weber page before Amazon’s catalogue attributes. The Compact 47 cm record includes a catalogue cooking surface of 47 square centimetres, although the bullets state 1,548 cm². Diameter is the size class, not the usable area. Compact 1502054 is not Bar-B-Kettle 1502055. A thermometer on the Bar-B-Kettle page does not add one to the Compact. At 57 cm, a feature on model 1502062 is not evidence for Compact 1502061. Amazon lists 13.6 kg for Original Premium 1502210; Weber states 18 kg. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, the description matters.

Warranty wording before you pay

Weber’s pages for the Original range describe a 10-year limited warranty, governed by the owner’s guide. The Compact Amazon records contain the fragment “2.” in the warranty field. That fragment does not state a term, covered parts or exclusions. The ivory Master-Touch 14505601 and Go-Anywhere 1500763 are US imports whose manufacturer warranty will not apply. A lower import price is not the same as a supported UK listing, and the seller and delivery position can change.

Which decision comes first

If you host six several times each summer, the extra room of a 57 cm kettle may be worth storing. If four is the upper limit, a 47 cm model avoids cleaning a larger bowl. Choose the Original to read the lid temperature. Choose the Compact if you will control heat through the vents and keep more than £60. Common questions

Is a 47 cm Weber kettle enough for four to six people?
The 47 cm listings state 1,548 cm² and capacity for four to six people. That is a sensible guide for burgers, sausages and a few sides, but large steaks or a two-zone layout consume space quickly. Choose 57 cm if you regularly need separation between direct and indirect heat.
When should I step up to 57 cm?
Move to 57 cm when you normally feed six to eight people or want 2,342 cm² for different heat zones. The larger bowl costs more and occupies more outdoor space. It is unnecessary if most cooks serve two to four people and the extra grate will remain empty.
Does the Weber Compact include a lid thermometer?
The Compact 47 cm and 57 cm bullets in this comparison do not name a thermometer. Do not borrow that feature from a similar Bar-B-Kettle page. The Original 47 cm and Original Premium 57 cm explicitly name a lid thermometer.
Is model 1502054 the same as Bar-B-Kettle 1502055?
No. They are neighbouring 47 cm model numbers, but model 1502054 is the Compact listing in this comparison and 1502055 is a Bar-B-Kettle on Weber’s site. Features on one model, including thermometer wording, should not be transferred to the other.
What does the warranty field “2.” mean?
On its own, it does not establish a useful warranty promise. It fails to state a unit, covered parts or exclusions. Check the seller’s terms and Weber documentation for the exact model rather than interpreting the fragment as a confirmed two-year warranty.
Should I shortlist a portable if the barbecue stays in the garden?
Usually not if you feed four to six people. A 47 cm stand kettle gives more working height and 1,548 cm² of grate area. A portable earns its place when it must be carried, packed or stored in a smaller footprint after it has fully cooled outdoors.
