Griddle plate for a gas barbecue

Updated: 23 October 2026

You want eggs, fish, and smash burgers on the gas barbecue you already own, and the food keeps falling through the bars. A griddle plate for a gas barbecue is the flat insert on those grates. It has to clear the lid, sit still, and get hot. A thin sheet stays cool. A PTFE plate fails if you preheat the empty coating over a full flame. This page stays on that gas-grill job, not the kamado insert and not a hob review. Every listing is in the [plancha griddle plate comparison](/hub/grill-accessories/plancha-griddle-plate). Peter F. wrote this on 20 October 2026 from amazon.co.uk fields and UK reviews. Nothing here was cooked in a lab.

What changes on a gas grill

Open bars drop fat onto the burners. A plate gives a continuous face for breakfast and small fish. A complete gas plancha is a different buy, about £149 to £699. Char-Broil UK say put the plate in while it heats, match that grill, and cut food a little thinner. Fat should not pour onto the burner. Keep the burners where they are. The plate sits on the grates, and the lid has to close. Lodge and Overmont are hob griddles, easy wrong buys here. The round Onlyfire insert names Large Big Green Egg and other 18-inch ceramics. It is not a gas-barbecue rectangle.

Measure the lid and the grate

Measure the grate, the height under the lid, and the lid arms. A plate a centimetre too wide sits on the brackets and stops the lid. Universal is not a measurement. Onlyfire stainless says 40.5 by 32 cm in the title and 31.8 by 40.5 by 7 cm in the details. If you are close to the limit, ask which figure is the cooking face. One UK review says the GFTIME cast iron plate, 58.6 by 40.5 cm and 11.4 kg, fits between that owner's lid arms. That is one barbecue, not yours. CosmoGrill's plates are 42 by 28 cm for the XL and 42 by 36 cm for the XXL. Buy them for that smoker, not as a 58 cm tray. An 18-inch ceramic is a different purchase.

Plates in this set that name gas

WUDLEP at £44.99 is 58 by 40 cm and 4.48 kg, with a trough. The line is 3.9 from 11 reviews. UK comments include a gas-barbecue fit, a slight warp, and a dented weld. DOBADN at £66.99 is 58.3 by 40.5 cm and 4.79 kg, 3.7 from 27 reviews, with a twist-on-heat comment. Onlyfire stainless at £54.99 and 3.15 kg has 4.2 from 1,641 reviews and the thin, cool cluster. Onlyfire cast iron at £59.99 is 48.5 by 40 cm and 7.47 kg, with smash burgers and sticking in the notes. The coated GFTIME plate names gas and caps itself at 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Lodge and Overmont mention a grill among hob uses. Who the Onlyfire iron plate is for sits on the best plancha griddle plate page.

Heat, coating, and fat

Preheat with the plate in and the lid down until the face is hot. A lid thermometer reads the air, not the steel. Onlyfire's 3.15 kg reviews include a cool face. If that is the failure you care about, look at cast iron you can lift on the cast iron or stainless page. Do not preheat the coated plate empty over a full flame. Its cap is 500 degrees Fahrenheit, and Chemours put empty-pan coating damage above 348 degrees Celsius. Fat still flares if it runs onto the burners. Empty a trough when the metal is cool. A sheet that twists on first heat is a Consumer Rights Act 2015 issue.

Common questions

How do I know the lid will close?
Measure the height and the lid arms, then compare them with the plate's width and the height of any rim. One GFTIME cast iron review says that 58.6 cm plate fits between the lid arms of that owner's barbecue. Your arms may be closer. Onlyfire's stainless listing does not even agree with itself: 40.5 by 32 cm in the title, 31.8 by 40.5 by 7 cm in the details. If the lid hits the rim, the plate does not fit, and running the barbecue with the lid open wastes the heat.
Should I buy the PTFE one for a gas grill?
Only if you will cook inside the 500 degrees Fahrenheit field on the GFTIME coated plate at £54.99. It has 4.6 from 637 reviews, grease grooves, and a Teflon materials line. Do not preheat it empty over a roaring gas flame. Chemours put the start of empty-pan coating damage above 348 degrees Celsius. If you want to run the barbecue very hot for smash burgers, the bare Onlyfire cast iron plate is the closer match, with sticking in the reviews instead of a coating cap.
Do I still get flare-ups?
You get fewer flare-ups on the food, because the fat is on the plate rather than on the bars, and you still get them if fat pours off the edge onto the burners. Plates with a grease trough, such as the WUDLEP and the Onlyfire stainless sheet, are trying to catch that fat. Empty it when the metal is cool. Keep the plate level. A warped sheet sends the fat to one corner and back onto the flame.
Is a hob griddle a gas-barbecue plate?
It can sit on a grill if the bullets say so, and it is usually the wrong size. Lodge is 42.5 by 24.1 cm. Overmont is a hob and camp griddle with size lines that clash. Neither is a 58 cm gas-grill tray.
What do I do if the sheet twists on first heat?
Stop cooking on it. Turn the gas off and let it cool. One DOBADN review reports a thin sheet that twists when heat is applied, and a WUDLEP review reports a slight warp. Do not bend it back into place and carry on. A plate that arrives out of shape, or that moves the first time you heat it as instructed, is a reason to use the seller and the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Seasoning will not flatten it.
