One grate lifter or two: when a single hook twists

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are choosing one grate lifter or two because a wide cooking grate tipped the last time you hooked one side. One contact on the rim acts as a lever. Food slides, and the wrist takes the weight. Two hooks can hold the grate level, and they occupy both hands. A centre clamp is the third option: one tool, locked in the middle, with a hand left free. This page is that fork. The table is the [grill grate lifter comparison](/hub/grill-accessories/grill-grate-lifter). There is no laboratory test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What one hook actually does

A single hook under one bar is a lever. The far edge drops unless the grate is small and you only tilt it. US patent 8,740,269 describes that instability. Yiougupiom is one 27.5 cm lifter at £5.99, with no review line. GZChuXin is 24 cm of bare steel at £7.99, and “210 stainless” is not 304. Yuzita at £13.99 states 304, with 4.3 from 16, and it is still one tool in one place.

What a pair is for

A pair puts a contact on each side so the grate can come up level, if the hooks are opposite and your hands rise together. A UK review of the BNGXR pair, £10.99 and 27.5 cm, with 4.5 from 35 reviews, says to keep the grate balanced between them. An Italian review says they do not adapt to every grate. onlyfire is two acacia-handle hooks, 27.1 cm, £20.99, 4.7 from 103, with UK notes on an Egg and a Weber. You still use both hands. Gxdamxz is two hooks at £7.99 with 5.0 from one review and no text. Ameble is two 430 pieces at £9.19 with no reviews. ZPSCXQ’s bullets describe office clips, so do not count it as a working pair. Heads and prices in order are the grill grate lifter buying guide.

When one tool is the right one

One tool is right in two narrow cases. The first is a centre lock: Big Green Egg’s grid lifter at £33, or Kamado Joe’s KJ-GG at £14.99 in 304. You depress, quarter-turn, release, check, and lift. The other hand takes charcoal. Ceramic grids are the kamado grate lifter page. The second case is mesh, a pan, or a tray. M METERXITY’s 1-pack is 22 cm, 49.9 g, £7.49, and the listing says not to soak the plastic in boiling water. The 3-pack at £8.49 is three of the same pry. They are spares, not a three-point lifter.

Which listings are which

Clear singles are Yiougupiom, GZChuXin, Yuzita, and the M METERXITY 1-pack. Clear pairs are onlyfire, BNGXR, Ameble, and Gxdamxz. The 3-pack is three prys, not a balanced system. Kaaeiccr never states the piece count in the title. A wide kettle points at BNGXR or onlyfire. A kamado points at a centre clamp if you want one hand free. The lift itself is how to lift a hot grill grate.

Common questions

When is one tool enough?
When the grate is small and you only tilt it, or when the single tool is a centre clamp that locks in the middle, or when you are easing a mesh tray with a flat pry. Yiougupiom’s £5.99 hook is the tilt case, with no reviews to confirm it. KJ-GG at £14.99 and the Egg grid lifter at £33 are the lock case. The 22 cm M METERXITY pry is the mesh case. One rim hook on a wide, loaded grate is the case that twists.
When do I need a pair?
When the grate is wide, it has no centre lock, and you can use both hands. BNGXR at £10.99 is the pair a UK review tells you to balance. onlyfire at £20.99 is the pair with 103 reviews and UK notes on an Egg and a Weber. The hooks have to sit on opposite sides. A pair in the drawer, used one at a time, behaves like a single and tips the same way.
Does a 3-pack mean a more stable lift?
No. The M METERXITY 3-pack at £8.49 is three 22 cm prys. Stability comes from where the metal meets the grate during the lift, not from how many identical tools are in the bag. One pry in a mesh gap is a light tilt. Three prys do not become a centre clamp. Buy the 3-pack for spares. Buy a pair or a real clamp for a wide grate.
Can a centre clamp replace two hooks on a kamado?
Yes, if it is a clamp that locks, such as KJ-GG or the Egg grid lifter, and you do the quarter-turn and the security check. That is the point of the brand tool: one hand on the grate, one hand for fuel. A single rim hook does not replace the pair. A generic that only says clamp in a bullet, with no reviews, still needs a cold test. The kamado page covers the fire ring. This page only draws the fork.
Why does the grate tilt?
Because one contact is a lever. The far side drops, food slides, and a 70 by 45 cm grate is already enough to feel it, as in the review of a short lever that the cook would not lift while it was loaded. Two hooks on the same half of the grate do the same thing. Spread them, or lock the middle. A longer handle on one hook moves your hand. It does not add a second contact.
