How to lift a hot grill grate without dropping it

Updated: 23 October 2026

The charcoal needs topping up, or a heat deflector has to go in, and the cooking grate is too hot to pinch with tongs. You need a way to lift it, test it will not twist, and somewhere metal to put it down. This is that sequence for a centre clamp and for a pair of hooks. It is not a ranking of brands. The rows are on the [grill grate lifter comparison](/hub/grill-accessories/grill-grate-lifter). There is no laboratory test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before the grate moves

Put the landing spot in place before you touch the bars. Use a metal tray, a steel shelf meant for heat, or the ground clear of dry grass. Weber’s leaflet for another hot accessory says not to set hot metal on a combustible surface or on glass. Gloves stay on both hands. EN 407 contact-heat level 2 is the glove class Weber names. Seat the head, lift a few centimetres, and set it back if it twists. If the head will not enter the bars, the grill grate lifter buying guide is the next page.

Centre clamp

A spring grid lifter locks near the middle so one hand can lift. Depress the grip, put the head between the bars, turn about a quarter turn, release, and check it is secure before you take weight. Then lift. Big Green Egg’s steps add the security check and a gentle return to the fire ring. If a small lift pulls the tool straight out, seat it again. A full spin is how the head misses the bars. A pair of hooks has no spring and no quarter turn. The Egg’s UK grid lifter is the £33 one-handed tool. Do not move the ceramic cooker while it is hot. Ceramic cookers are on the kamado grate lifter page.

A pair of hooks

Two hooks work on opposite sides, lifted together. A UK review of the BNGXR pair says they do the job if you keep the grate balanced. If one hand leads, the grate becomes a seesaw. The handles in that set are about 27.5 cm. Hooks fail when they sit on a thick bar, or when both are on the same half of the grate. Then move straight to the metal tray. A pair against one hook is one grate lifter or two.

If something goes wrong

Stop when the tool bends, the grate slips, or you cannot keep it level. Put it back if it is still over the firebox. A bent hook is finished for that cook. Do not straighten it over the coals and try again. If the ceramic shell is cracked, that is a dealer for the cooker, not a new hook. A burn is first aid, not a product tip. NHS advice is to cool the skin under cool running water for 20 minutes. Do not use ice, butter, or creams. Then cover with loose cling film. Call 999 for a large, deep, facial, genital, chemical, or electrical burn. Use NHS 111 if you are unsure and the injury is not in that list.

Common questions

Do I wear gloves as well as use the lifter?
Yes. The lifter keeps the bare hand off the bars. Gloves cover the miss when a wrist meets the bowl or the grate swings. Weber’s note on a hot accessory points to EN 407 contact-heat level 2 gloves. That class is for the gloves, not a rating transferred to a third-party hook. Wood and plastic handles still get hot if they rest on the grate. Put the gloves on before the test lift, not after the first slip.
How do I know a centre clamp has locked?
You depress, insert, quarter-turn, and release, then you check. A small lift of a few centimetres should not pull the head straight out of the bars. If it does, the turn did not catch. Seat it again. Looking only at a closed handle is not the check. Big Green Egg’s steps include that security check before the real lift, and they tell you to return the grid gently to the fire ring.
Where do I put the grate down?
On metal, chosen before you lift: a tray, or a steel shelf rated for a hot grate. Decking, plastic, and glass are the usual mistake. Weber’s accessory warning says not to set hot metal on a combustible surface or on glass. Keep the path clear so you are not stepping over a hose with both hands full. Set the grate down fully. Do not lean it on the cooker rim while you look for the charcoal.
Can I lift the grate with dinner still on it?
Not if the grate is wide or the tool already feels unsteady. A review of a 70 by 45 cm grate said the cook would not lift it with food on it. Food shifts as soon as one side rises. Take the food off, or use a centre clamp on a kamado grid you have already test-lifted empty. A pair has to stay level the whole way. If you cannot do that with an empty grate, you cannot do it with a full one.
What if I am using a pair rather than a spring tool?
There is no quarter turn. Put the hooks on opposite sides, lift both hands together, and keep the grate balanced, which is what a UK review of a 27.5 cm pair asks you to do. If one hook is only resting on a bar, the few-centimetre test will show the slip. Two people need one landing spot and one person who steps back first. A second hook left in the drawer does not balance anything.
