Vegetable grill basket: peppers, onions, and prawns

Updated: 23 October 2026

The pepper strips are ready, the onions are in chunks, and the grate in front of you is wide enough to lose both. A vegetable grill basket is the closed mesh for that dice, and for prawns that slip off a skewer. This page stays with loose food. A whole fish or a fillet that must not tumble belongs on [fish grill basket](/hub/grill-accessories/grill-basket/sub/grill-basket-fish). The twelve listings and their prices are on our [grill basket comparison](/hub/grill-accessories/grill-basket), read on 20 October 2026. There is no lab test. Why vegetables fall through

Barbecue gaps are wider than a slice of onion, a mushroom, or a prawn. Tongs keep the large pieces and lose the rest. A closed roller puts mesh around the loose food so you turn the cage. An open tray still spills if you tilt it. UK texts on the round Ivtivfu, at £18.99 with a shared 4.6 from 5,091, describe vegetables and prawns staying off the bars. JUAUO texts at £11.58 say the same, across a 4.7 from 110 printed on two listings. Cookwise states a 0.8 mm mesh thickness. That is the wire, not the gap. A strip or a prawn needs the mesh. A whole pepper you can turn with tongs does not. The latch has to stay shut.

Roller, hex, or open tray

Prefer a nesting 304 roller with a handle that unscrews. The round Ivtivfu is 10 × 10 × 24 cm and 1.9 litres at £18.99. The hex is £20.99, 11.7 × 10.3 × 25.6 cm and 5.3 litres, and it shares the 4.6 from 5,091. One UK text prefers the hex because it turns onto flat faces. That is £2 for a shape, not a second sample. JUAUO at £11.58 is the lower 304 price, on the shared 110-review line. RUTIDA at £9.99 names 304 and then prints 10 × 10 × 10 mm. A 2.6 cm fish clamp will not tumble a pepper mix.

Loading peppers, onions, and prawns

Cut to a similar thickness, or the onion burns while the pepper is still raw. One Ivtivfu review is the load to copy in spirit: four peppers and a couple of onions would not move, and three peppers plus one onion in the large basket, with asparagus in the small one, did, in about 20 minutes. That is one cook, not a rule. JUAUO's about 70 percent is a seller's ceiling. If the cold cage is silent when you shake it, take food out. Prawns can share the roller, but they finish sooner than a thick mushroom, so add them later. Oil the mix. A dry mesh glues onion to the wire. Seat the handle cap while the metal is cold.

Colour on the mesh

A roller shades the food, and an overfilled cage steams it. Leave space, keep flames off the mesh, and turn often. You will not get steak stripes on a dice of pepper. You should get colour where the food touched the wire. Mushrooms throw water. A full cage of them boils. Use a thinner layer in the smaller basket, with the lid open for part of the time. Sausages in the same cage are a different rule. The Food Standards Agency says they must be cooked through, at 70°C for 2 minutes or another combination on its table. Probe the meat. A charred pepper is not that reading.

Common questions

Will a basket stop chopped peppers and onions falling through?
A closed roller stops the pieces that are larger than the gaps, which is why UK reviews on the Ivtivfu and the JUAUO describe vegetables staying off the coals. It will not stop dust-fine dice if the hole is wide, and the hole size is rarely printed. A 0.8 mm figure on the cookwise listing is wire thickness. Keep the latch shut. One Ivtivfu review lost the load when a handle cap came off.
Round roller or hexagon?
The round Ivtivfu at £18.99 tumbles freely. The hex at £20.99 is the one a UK text preferred for turning onto a flat face. Both show 4.6 from 5,091, so you are not buying more reviews with the hex. Choose the hex if you want set positions. Choose the round if you want the lower price and a cage that keeps rolling. Neither replaces a fish clamp.
How full should the vegetable basket be?
Loose enough to move. One JUAUO bullet says about 70 percent. One Ivtivfu cook found four peppers and a couple of onions too many, then used three peppers and one onion in the large basket with asparagus in the small one. Shake the cold cage. If nothing shifts, take food out. A full tube steams the vegetables instead of colouring them.
Can I cook prawns in the same basket?
Yes, if they are part of the same loose mix and you accept that they finish sooner than a thick mushroom or a wedge of onion. The Ivtivfu and JUAUO listings both name prawns or shrimp beside vegetables, and UK texts mention prawns staying in the mesh. Add them later in the cook if you want them less firm. They still need the latch closed, or they drop through the grate as before.
Do I still get char, or does the mesh steam the vegetables?
You get colour where the food touches hot wire, and you get steam if the cage is packed or full of wet mushrooms. Leave space, turn the basket, and do not expect bare-grate stripes. An overfilled first cook on the Ivtivfu file is the example of the steam problem. A thinner second load is the example of the cage doing the job.
