Grill basket buying guide: form before the brand

Updated: 23 October 2026

The peppers are in the bowl and the grate is already hot. A grill basket buying guide should settle the shape before the brand. In this amazon.co.uk set of twelve listings, captured on 19 October 2026, prices run from £9.99 to £20.99: a tumbling roller, a fish clamp, and at least one size line you cannot cook with. The [grill basket comparison](/hub/grill-accessories/grill-basket) holds the twelve prices and star lines. Who each pick is for sits on [best grill basket](/hub/grill-accessories/grill-basket/sub/grill-basket-best). There is no lab test. What you are cooking

Start with the food. A rolling cage is a closed tube: load chopped vegetables or prawns and turn the cage. A hinged clamp is one shallow layer you flip, for a fillet or a whole fish. An open tray only stops a few pieces, and it spills if you flip it. IKEA's GRILLTIDER is that tray: stainless, £5, 33 × 19 × 8.5 cm, and not one of the twelve. Weber's Premium is £23.99 and a larger basket is £44.99, outside this set, with a fit line rather than fits-all-grills. None of these twelve files includes a grate diagram.

Steel, mesh, and the handle

Read the steel before the stars. The British Stainless Steel Association ranks corrosion resistance roughly 316 above 304 above 430, and food grade is not an official class. Salt on a wet mesh is harder on the milder grade. In this set, 304 is named on the Ivtivfu round and hex, cookwise, both JUAUO listings, the RUTIDA title, and the Generic. Only the shidaishiye names 430. SHIZZO, SAFNAJ, and ACMETOP say stainless and stop. Cookwise and the Generic state a 0.8 mm mesh thickness. That is the wire, not the gap. Wood should unscrew so the lid can close. Take it off, wash the mesh, and dry it. The SAFNAJ says dishwasher no.

What the UK prices look like

The entry band is about £10 to £13: RUTIDA at £9.99 with 5.0 from 7, nesting JUAUO at £11.58, side-opening JUAUO at £13.03 with a brush, and SAFNAJ at £12.95 with one review. Both JUAUO pages show 4.7 from 110, one sample twice. A low price is not a bargain if the size line is nonsense. The mid band is about £17 to £21: Generic £16.99 with one review, cookwise £17.99 with 4.4 from 109, and the hex Ivtivfu and ACMETOP at £20.99. One name from inside the set sits on the best page.

Figures that should not decide it

A 5.0 from one review is one person. Generic, SAFNAJ, and kefeimumu sit there, and the kefeimumu text is German. RUTIDA's 5.0 from 7 still prints 10 × 10 × 10 mm. Do not convert that into centimetres. The round Ivtivfu at £18.99 and the hex at £20.99 both show 4.6 from 5,091. Adding them invents a second crowd. The JUAUO listings share 4.7 from 110 the same way. None of these files shows a UKCA mark. BS EN 1860-1:2024 covers solid-fuel barbecues, not a loose basket. A cap that dumps the load is a Consumer Rights Act 2015 return, not a safety test.

Common questions

Do I want a rolling basket or a flat fish basket?
Buy a rolling basket when the food is chopped and would fall through the grate, and buy a flat clamp when the food is a fillet or a whole fish that must stay in one piece. A roller tumbles. A clamp flips. An open tray, such as the IKEA GRILLTIDER at £5, only blocks a few pieces and will spill if you turn it over. The two shapes are not substitutes.
Is 304 better than a listing that only says stainless steel?
A named 304 grade is the clearer buy in this set, because the British Stainless Steel Association ranks 304 above 430 for corrosion resistance and says food grade is not an official class. 430 appears on the shidaishiye bullets only. Stainless with no grade, which is what several clamps print, tells you less. 304 is still not a certificate, and a wet salty mesh should be dried whatever the number.
Can the wooden handle go in the dishwasher?
Take the wooden handle off first. Listings that say the steel is dishwasher safe are talking about the mesh, and UK reviews on the Ivtivfu file say the beech unscrews for that reason. The ACMETOP page says both dishwasher safe and hand wash only, so that listing does not give you one instruction. The SAFNAJ is hand wash only. Metal handles, where reviews mention them, get hot on the grill even when the wood does not.
Will a £10 basket be too small or too thin?
Price does not answer the size. The £9.99 RUTIDA prints 10 × 10 × 10 mm, which is not a usable basket, while the £11.58 JUAUO prints 31 × 10.5 × 9.3 cm. A thin wire can still be 304. Judge the centimetre line, the named steel, and whether anyone has described a second cook. A single five-star review at £12.95 does not prove the mesh is thick.
Why do two Ivtivfu listings show the same 5,091 reviews?
The round Ivtivfu and the hexagonal Ivtivfu both show 4.6 from 5,091 and the same Best Sellers Rank. Treat that as one shared line, not 10,182 people. The hex costs £20.99 against £18.99 for the round, and one UK text prefers the hex because it turns onto flat faces. You are paying for the shape, not for a separate review sample.
