BBQ grill mat or under grill mat

Updated: 22 October 2026

Amazon.co.uk will sell you both under one search. One is a sheet about the size of a baking tray. The other can be longer than the barbecue. If you are deciding between a BBQ grill mat or an under grill mat, the test is simple: does the food touch it, or does the ground? This page stops at that fork. Size and material continue on the [buying guide](/hub/grill-accessories/bbq-mat/sub/bbq-mat-buying-guide). The [BBQ mat comparison](/hub/grill-accessories/bbq-mat) lists all twelve. Food on the grate means £7.99 to £11.99. Grease on the patio means £12.85 to £38.00.

Same words, two objects

A cooking sheet here is a thin non-stick piece, mostly about 40 x 33 cm. Linda's Essentials is the exception at 41.3 x 58.4 cm. You lay it on the bars so halloumi, prawns, and sliced peppers do not fall through. An under-grill mat is a single piece from 100 x 150 cm up to about 254 x 130 cm, on the slabs so drips and sparks hit the mat. Grill mat, oven liner, and fireproof appear on both kinds of page. If the listing leads with 33 cm or 40 cm, it is a food sheet. If it leads with 100 cm, 120 cm, 190 cm, or 254 cm, it is the ground. Ronsan’s 121 cm round is still a floor mat, not a kettle grate. A PTFE sheet under the legs does not protect decking, and a silicone floor mat on the grate is not a food surface in these listings.

Choose the sheet when food falls through

Choose a grate sheet when food lands in the firebox: sausages that slip, fish that breaks, vegetables cut small enough to drop between the bars. The packs are Cookey at £7.99, the GQC six-pack at £8.99, Linda's at £9.99, Homealexa, the narrower GQC pack and WholeFire at £10.99, and Ankier at £11.99. They are not deck protectors. One 40 x 33 cm piece covers a zone, so a wide gas grill needs two, or Linda's at 41.3 x 58.4 cm. WholeFire’s mesh can let smoke through, and reviews include burn-through. The how to use page is the sequence once a sheet is in the house. Do not put a cooking sheet on the patio and expect it to catch a kettle. The 260°C line is a food-coating ceiling, not a deck rating.

Choose the floor mat when the patio is the mess

Choose a floor mat when the grate is fine and the slabs are not. The five here are Alckijy at 100 x 150 cm for £12.85, Ronsan as a 121 cm round for £18.90, Nicoman at 120 x 90 cm for £21.99, M METERXITY at 190 x 100 cm for £24.49, and THMINS at about 254 x 130 cm for £38.00. They should be larger than the barbecue. Alckijy, Ronsan, THMINS, and M METERXITY are sold as silicone-coated fibreglass. Nicoman’s field says PVC and rubber, and two reviews say a fire pit melted it. Skip Nicoman if anything burning will sit on the mat. Heat lines of 1800°F, 982°C, 1000°C, and 2000°F are seller text. One Alckijy review says the grass underneath still burned. One THMINS review says small coals burnt through onto Millboard.

Neither mat rewrites the siting rules

London Fire Brigade’s leaflet from April 2024 says to barbecue on level ground, not on decking and not on a balcony. A mat under the bowl does not cancel that line. GOV.UK’s outdoor fire guidance also rules out a tent, an awning, and a caravan. If the only place for the kettle is composite decking, you need a different place to cook. Napoleon’s own UK grill mat 68001, which is not one of these twelve, costs £49.99 and is not recommended for composite decking. If food falls through the grate, buy a cooking sheet and follow the heat rules on the PTFE page. If a gas barbecue already sits on a suitable surface, a floor mat can catch grease. If you hoped a mat would make charcoal safe on composite decking or a balcony, do not buy either product for that purpose.

Common questions

If grease stains the patio, which mat do I buy?
Buy a floor mat larger than the barbecue, from Alckijy at 100 x 150 cm up to THMINS at about 254 x 130 cm. A grate sheet is too small to catch drips on the slabs. Skip Nicoman if a fire pit will sit on it. Read the THMINS burn-through review before composite decking.
Can I use a PTFE sheet under the barbecue?
You can lay it on the ground, and it will do almost nothing useful. A 40 x 33 cm sheet does not cover the legs, the drip tray, and the splash zone. It is a food-contact surface with a ceiling around 260°C, not a deck barrier.
Can I cook on a silicone floor mat?
No. The floor mats are described as barriers under a barbecue or fire pit, not as a surface for food. Their four-digit heat claims are seller text. Use a grate sheet for food, and keep the floor mat on the ground.
Is a round 121 cm mat for the grate of a kettle?
No. Ronsan’s 121 cm round is a floor protector under a fire pit or barbecue. A kettle grate is much smaller. The model name says 48 inch and one review mentions 36 inch. For food on the kettle grate you still want a 40 cm sheet.
What if I need both jobs?
Buy both, and keep them in different places. A grate sheet stays on the bars. A floor mat stays under the legs if the surface is already a suitable place to cook. Two products still do not make a balcony or a composite deck an acceptable site for charcoal.
