BBQ mat buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have typed “BBQ mat” on amazon.co.uk and the results mix a cooking sheet the size of a tea tray with a patio mat long enough to sit under a gas barbecue. This BBQ mat buying guide is the order of those decisions, not a league table of brands. The [BBQ mat comparison](/hub/grill-accessories/bbq-mat) holds the twelve listings, with the GBP prices and star lines. Sheets here run from £7.99 to £11.99, and floor mats from £12.85 to £38.00. Peter F. checked the listings on 20 October 2026. This is not a lab test.

Two products share the name

A BBQ mat in UK search results is either a thin sheet on the grate or a larger mat on the ground. The sheet stops sausages, halloumi, and sliced vegetables falling through the bars. The floor mat lets grease and sparks meet the patio instead of the deck boards. A 40 x 33 cm PTFE sheet will not shield Millboard, and a 254 cm patio mat will not stop a sausage dropping into the firebox. Cooking sheets here are Linda's Essentials, both GQC packs, Cookey, Homealexa, Ankier, and the WholeFire mesh. Floor mats are Alckijy, Ronsan, Nicoman, M METERXITY, and THMINS. If the title says oven liner, it is still a food sheet. If it says fire pit, deck, or patio, it is the ground. The cooking sheet or floor mat page stays on that choice.

Size before brand

Most grate sheets here are about 40 x 33 cm, a section of a UK gas barbecue rather than a four-burner. If the grate is roughly 70 cm wide, one 40 cm sheet leaves a bare strip, so you lay two side by side or buy the extra-large pack. Linda's Essentials states 41.3 x 58.4 cm at £9.99. The 17.78 cm line is the packed size, not the mat. Floor mats need a margin past the feet and the drip tray. Alckijy is 100 x 150 cm at £12.85. Ronsan is a 121 cm round at £18.90, though one review mentions a 36 inch circle. Nicoman is 120 x 90 cm, M METERXITY is 190 x 100 cm, and THMINS is about 254 x 130 cm at £38.00, with the sides printed in the other order. A 4.7 on the 40 x 30 cm GQC pack does not help if you needed 58 cm of width.

Read the material lines together

A reusable sheet here is usually fibreglass with a PTFE coating, the family sold as Teflon. Some bullets say silicone, and some fields say PTFE-free beside a PTFE bullet. Prefer a listing whose bullet and field name the same material. GQC B07MDM59BV, £8.99 and 4.5 from 5,711 reviews, says PTFE-coated fibreglass in the bullets and silicone and fabric in the field. Homealexa, 4.7 from 1,008 at £10.99, says PTFE fibreglass and PTFE-free. Cookey at £7.99 says silicone, polytetrafluoroethylene, and PTFE-free. Ankier’s bullets and material field both say PTFE-coated fibreglass, though the heat bullet prints 260°C and 380°F together. PFOA-free is not the same claim as PTFE-free.

Claims that are not a test

Grate-sheet bullets cluster at 260°C or 500°F, the same pair of figures. Chemours cites 260°C as the usual oven ceiling for Teflon coatings. Alckijy prints 1800°F, Ronsan 982°C, M METERXITY 1000°C, and THMINS 2000°F. Those are seller lines. UK reviews on Nicoman and THMINS include melting and burn-through, and one Alckijy review says the grass underneath still burned. FDA approved on a GQC bullet is not a UK certificate. England’s rules sit in the Materials and Articles in Contact with Food (England) Regulations 2012, which enforce Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004. There is no British Standard number on these listings. A floor mat does not cancel the London Fire Brigade line from April 2024: a barbecue does not belong on decking or a balcony. The PTFE heat and food-contact page stays with those temperature sources.

Common questions

Will one 40 x 33 cm sheet cover a four-burner gas grill?
Usually not. A wide gas grate needs two of the 40 cm sheets side by side, or the Linda's sheet at 41.3 x 58.4 cm. Two 40 cm sheets can still leave a gap at the edges, and anything that overhangs the grate can hang toward the flame.
When is the 41.3 x 58.4 cm Linda's sheet the size to buy?
Buy it when one piece has to cover a wide grate and you would otherwise overlap two 40 x 33 cm sheets. It is the wrong size if you only need a small zone for fish, and the wrong product if the mess is on the patio rather than on the bars.
What should I do when the bullet says PTFE and the field says PTFE-free?
Read both lines and do not average them. You can still buy the pack if the size and the review count suit you, though you should not tell yourself the coating is settled. Ankier is the sheet whose bullets and material field both say PTFE-coated fibreglass.
Is a mesh mat the same purchase as a solid sheet?
No. WholeFire is the only mesh here, at £10.99. The open weave is meant to let some smoke through while small foods stay put, and the listing says to keep it at least 5 inches from open flames. Reviews include burn-through on a gas barbecue, a Weber, and a Big Green Egg.
Can the same sheet line an oven?
Cookey and Homealexa are sold as oven liners and barbecue mats, at 40 x 33 cm. An oven floor is a different heat pattern from a charcoal bed, and no heat figure is printed on Cookey. Trim overhang so the sheet stays on the tray, not against an element.
