Sprinkler not rotating on low pressure

Updated: 23 October 2026

The arm creeps to one side and stops, or the jet falls a couple of metres in front of the spike. A sprinkler not rotating on low pressure is a common outside-tap complaint, and the tap is only one of four causes. A trip pin left up, a leak, and a second head on the same hose all look the same from the kitchen. This page is the order of checks, not a second buying guide. Listings and prices are on the [sector sprinkler comparison](/hub/garden-watering/sector-sprinkler). If the stops were never set, do that on [how to set a sector sprinkler](/hub/garden-watering/sector-sprinkler/sub/sector-sprinkler-how-to-set). It reaches one side and stops

On an impact head the part-circle trip has to be down, in the path of the stops. Up is full circle. If the lever is up, the head was told not to reverse. If it is down and the arm sits on a clip, Lawn Tiger's sheet puts reversing at about 2 bar with the clip down. Look for a leak before you blame the water company. On the heavier FANHAO, a joint leak cut the throw to about two feet. Tighten a metal inlet until the drip stops, and do not keep going on a plastic thread. Gardena's 8141-20 does not use that trip pin. UK reviews say it spins one way only when pressure is low, which matches Gardena UK's note that this class starts at about 2.0 bar. If the rings are set and the head still creeps one way, you are past setup.

Do not oil the arm

Do not oil the arm because a STYDDI review said oil freed it. Rain Bird's sheet lists lubricant as a cause of failure and says not to oil and not to drill the nozzle. Those pressure figures are for Rain Bird's heads, not a spec we are copying onto Grüntek. Flush grit out. If the joint is dry and the trip is down, then look at the supply.

One head on a short hose

Take every extra head off the hose. RESTMO's listing says coverage falls when several sprinklers share one hose, and a UK review says the spray becomes a dribble once a second head is linked. Grüntek's bullets mention series connection, and LATERN reviews say two together will not run. Run the suspect head alone, on the shortest hose you have, with the diffuser open. If it reverses on a short hose and dies on a 30 m reel, the reel was the restriction. If the bib itself is a tired trickle with no hose attached, another sprinkler will not help. A WaterSafe plumber is the person who should touch a supply pipe. Lawn Tiger says a full circle can be easier when pressure is not high. If the arm will not travel even with the trip up, on one head and a short hose, stop the experiment.

0.7 bar is not 2 bar

Ofwat says the guaranteed minimum is seven metres of static head in the communication pipe, about 0.7 bar at the boundary, not at the end of your hose. Gardena UK support says this class starts at around 2.0 bar and is rated to 6 bar. An international Gardena FAQ has quoted 1.5 bar. Use the UK page. Listing ceilings in this set include Cellfast and STYDDI at 6 bar, Grüntek at 4 bar, and the green FANHAO at 80 psi. Those are maxima on the page, not proof your tap reaches them. If one head on a short hose, with the trip down and a dry joint, still will not turn, the unit may be faulty. You can reject faulty goods under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. The best-of page only helps after one head has actually turned.

Common questions

Is the water company's minimum enough?
Often it is not, for these heads. Ofwat's guaranteed minimum is seven metres of head, about 0.7 bar, in the communication pipe. Gardena UK support says this class starts at about 2.0 bar. Meeting the legal minimum can still leave an impact head sat on one stop. Judge it by whether your head reverses, not by the boundary figure alone.
Can a leak look like low pressure?
Yes. Water leaving at the inlet never reaches the nozzle. A FANHAO review describes a joint leak that dropped the throw to about two feet, and another describes an inlet that leaked until the seal was seated. If the fitting stays wet, reseat it. If it stays dry and the throw is still a puddle, the supply is the suspect.
Why does a second head only dribble?
Two heads share one hose's flow. RESTMO warns that coverage falls when several heads are linked, and a UK review says the result is a dribble. LATERN reviews say a pair will not run together. Take the second head off and see if the first one reverses. A series claim on a Grüntek listing is not a second full-size pattern.
Should I oil the head?
No. One STYDDI buyer used light oil to free a stuck head. Rain Bird's guide treats lubricant as a cause of failure and says not to oil the mechanism or drill the nozzle. Flush visible grit with the water running. If it still sticks, return the head rather than lubricating it.
When is the sprinkler faulty rather than the tap?
When one head, alone, on a short hose, with the trip down or the rings set, and with a dry joint, still will not reverse, and the bare tap runs a normal hose. Gardena buyers describe that failure within a week or two. A head that works on a short hose and fails on a long reel is the reel. A tap that trickles with nothing attached needs a plumber, not a second sprinkler.
