How to set up a portable shower

Updated: 23 October 2026

How to set up a portable shower depends on which you bought. A solar bag has to see the sun, then hang. A USB pump has to be underwater before you switch it on, with the port shut. If you are still choosing, read [solar shower bag or pump](/hub/garden-watering/outdoor-shower/sub/outdoor-shower-solar-bag-or-pump) and [best outdoor shower UK](/hub/garden-watering/outdoor-shower/sub/outdoor-shower-best). Set up the solar bag

Fill the bag with tap water you would wash in, and leave room to bleed the air. Lay it flat, black side up, for about three hours of strong sun. Treat 45°C as the figure the RISEPRO bullet meant. Hang it only after you have checked the heat, on a point that can hold about 20 kg plus the bag's 359 g. The hose is about 63 cm, so keep it straight. Bleed the air. TheFestivals puts a 20 litre gravity shower at about eight minutes and warns that UK sun can scald, so test on your wrist.

Set up the bucket pump

Charge from a USB-C lead, often about 5 V, and close the charging-port cover before the pump goes near water. Put it fully in clean tap water, then switch it on. Switching on in the air, or lifting it while it runs, sucks air and wets an open port. Switch off before you lift it. Where a listing prints a ceiling, it is often around 60°C. Do not pour a boiling kettle onto the pump. The pump will not heat the bucket. The kettle or the stove does. Use fresh water, not a ditch, the sea, or a pool. A polypropylene filter catches sediment. It does not make dirty water safe.

The three faults the UK reviews repeat

A kinked hose is the bag fault in RISEPRO reviews. Lay the short hose straight. A snapped switch is the other bag complaint. If it fails from new, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you 30 days to reject goods that are not of satisfactory quality. A blocked head shows up in Spopal reviews. Rinse the head and the filter. If it still will not pass water, stop. These housings are not a user-serviceable motor. A flooded charging port is the Zappyway theme: the cover was off, or the pump went in before the plug was shut. Do not charge a wet port.

Where the water goes, and when a plumber takes over

Soapy water does not belong in a stream or a ditch. The Countryside Code asks visitors not to leave waste, and shampoo counts. At a campsite, use the site wash area. At home, tip a bucket into a foul drain. A plumber is the wrong call for a kink, a cold bag, or a port you left open. Stop when you are about to cut pipe, bury a supply, or fix a hose that could reach a WC. That work sits under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 in England and Wales, and under different rules in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Do not add mains power to a USB pump.

Common questions

Why is the water still cold?
The bag is cold because the sun has not had long enough, the black side was down, or the day is overcast. UK guides use about three hours of strong sun as a rule of thumb. A pump is cold because it has no heater. Warm the bucket from a kettle, within the printed temperature limit, or accept a cold rinse. Do not pour boiling water over the housing.
How high do I hang a solar shower?
High enough for the short hose to reach you without a kink, on a point that can carry a full 20 litre bag, about 20 kg. The hose is only about 63 cm, so a low branch gives you a dribble at knee height. Do not use a flimsy tent pole or a gutter that was not meant to hold that weight. Bleed the air after hanging, then test the temperature on your wrist.
Do I switch the pump on before it is underwater?
No. Submerge the pump in clean water first, with the charging cover closed, and only then switch it on. Switch it off before you lift it out. Running it dry pulls air and can drag water into an open port. Listings print a USB-C charge around 5 V where they print a figure. Charge it away from the bucket, cap on, before the wash.
What do I do if the shower head blocks?
Check for a kink, then rinse the head and the sediment filter with clean tap water. Spopal reviews include blocked heads, usually after grit gets into the bucket. If a flush does not clear it, and the pump is new, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives 30 days to reject goods that are not as described. Do not open the sealed housing to poke the motor. A bag with a snapped switch is the same kind of return, not a repair on the campsite table.
When do I stop and call a plumber?
Call a plumber when you are fitting a wall kit to the house supply, burying pipe, or running any hose that could reach a toilet. A portable bag or a bucket pump does not need one. England and Wales use the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 for that plumbed work. Scotland and Northern Ireland use their own water rules, so ask the water company there before you alter the supply. Do not add a mains lead to these USB pumps.
