Watering lance for hanging baskets

Updated: 23 October 2026

The basket is above the door, the compost has shrunk from the rim, and a jet from a short gun is washing soil onto the step. A watering lance for hanging baskets is a shaft long enough that you are not on tiptoe, with a rose rather than a jet, stopped when water leaves the base. Cars, patios, and the full rank of ten stay on the [Metal watering lance](/hub/garden-watering/metal-watering-lance) comparison. If the connector will not seat, no length will help. Why baskets lose compost

A hanging basket fails from the spray before it fails from the calendar. Dry compost is loose. A jet blows that compost out of the liner, and the water runs through without wetting the root ball. Hozelock's basket page says to water the compost rather than the leaves, to use a rose rather than a jet, and to soak until water appears underneath. That is the maker's guide. In this set the jet is easy to select by mistake. The Wash It! names jet and flood beside shower, and one review says the patterns other than shower disperse poorly. If the spray throws compost, step back, choose shower, mist, or a rainfall face, and aim at the compost. How the joints weep once it is fitted is on how to use a watering lance.

How long the shaft needs to be

Shoulder-height baskets are a 40–50 cm job for many people, and still a stretch over a tall door. Wash It! reviewers say the 40 cm dimension line is only a short step up from a spray gun. Use that band when you can see the compost without leaning. The Restmo rainfall wand is 61 cm on every line. The fixed 94 cm Restmo, title 94 cm and dimensions 91.5 cm, is the one for a high bracket. The telescopic Restmo prints four lengths and the collar leaks when you slide it. The Aoowu title says 80 cm while the dimensions say 43 cm. The click and the thread words are on the metal watering lance buying guide.

The soft option in this set

The soft lance here is the Restmo rainfall wand at £29.74, with 4.5 from 97 reviews. It is a single 585-hole face and a thumb lever, not a dial you can knock onto jet. Reviewers describe a wide fine spray that does not strip compost. One unit would not turn off after three months. The head angle is not stated, so you tilt the shaft. If the basket is not high and you also want a jet for the path, the 48 cm Restmo pistol is the mixed-garden default on the best metal watering lance page. Stay on shower or mist for the liner. Its pin jets clog. The 94 cm Restmo gives you the longer fixed tube, at £32.29, with the connector complaints that come with it. The Ninmorth listing has no review text, so it is not the soft option.

When to stop, and when a can is the legal tool

Stop when water appears underneath the basket, which is Hozelock's cue, not when the surface looks dark. If the compost has shrunk, water slowly on the rose until the ball swells, then wait for the drip from the base. The maker's summer note is that baskets may need water daily. That is not a schedule we tested. A hosepipe ban does not make an exception for baskets. Ofwat's fine guidance runs up to £1,000. In a ban the legal tool is a can or a bucket, and the lance stays on the hook. If the spray still blows compost out, you are on jet or too close. A longer metal shaft will not repair that.

Common questions

How long a lance for a hanging basket?
If the rim is about at your shoulder, 40–50 cm is the short band in this set, and reviewers still call it short for high brackets. The 61 cm rainfall Restmo is the consistent mid length. The fixed Restmo near 94 cm is for brackets you cannot reach without stretching. A telescope in this set stays a risk until the collar holds a length the listing agrees on.
Should I use jet or shower?
Shower, mist, or the 585-hole rose. Hozelock says rose rather than jet, onto the compost. Jet and flood settings on the multi-pattern lances move loose compost out of the liner. If you need a jet for the step, change pattern after the basket has dripped, and do not leave the dial on jet for the next basket.
When has the basket had enough?
When water leaves the base, which is the cue on Hozelock's basket page. A dark surface is not enough if the compost has shrunk and the water is running down the outside. Soak slowly. Their summer note that baskets may need water daily is the maker's guide, not a schedule we tested.
Is a telescopic lance better for high brackets?
Only if the collar stays where you set it. The telescopic Restmo's reviews include a leak while sliding, and the page prints four lengths. A UK review of the Aoowu says the tube extends once the water is on. For a bracket you water every day, the fixed 94 cm Restmo is the predictable shaft, with its own connector limits.
Will a 40 cm lance do window boxes?
Often, yes. Window boxes and shoulder-height pots are what the Fanhao, Wash It!, Styddi, and short Restmo rows are for, if you can see the compost. Wash It! buyers say the 40 cm dimension line is only a short step up from a gun. A box above a tall window is a 61 cm or 94 cm problem, not a 40 cm one.
