How to use a hose reel cart

Updated: 23 October 2026

The cart is in the hall, and the first clip is about to lock the handle on the wrong side. How to use a hose reel cart comes down to three habits: set the handle before any clip locks, wind a straight hose with the tap off, and drain the hose before frost. Peter F. wrote this on 21 October 2026 from saved amazon.co.uk reviews and Hozelock's care page. If the last metres will not sit on the drum, stop. Models are on the [hose reel cart comparison](/hub/garden-watering/hose-reel-cart). No ranking and no lab. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission.

Before any clip locks

Lay the parts out and decide which side the handle lives on before anything clicks. Draper 25068 reviews are plain: fit the handle only once the body is the correct way around, because a clip locks and will not release. Hozelock's empty 2398 has the same one-way joints. Buyers say some joins cannot be undone, so have a second pair of hands before the first click. Relaxdays is the wording trap. The specification says assembly is not required, and the parts line lists individual parts, so treat the carton as a kit until the axle, handle and frame are already one piece. The Hozelock Plus title says the cart arrives assembled, with the fittings hidden inside the drum. Find those connectors before you fill the drum.

Leader and the first wind

Lay the hose out straight and let a stiff coil soften before you wind. Easy Garden Irrigation says to fit the ends, connect inside the drum, and wind in layers with no kinks. On the Hozelock Plus, reviews say you should guide the hose by hand, because a free crank lets it ride up and catch a wheel. A neat layer is a flat spiral, each turn beside the last, with the tap end already fixed. The leader length is not one number for every brand. One Plus review, reading a diagram, put about 1.5 m between the tap and the cart. That is a single buyer's reading. Measure your own run from the tap to where the cart will stand. If the last metres stand proud, or the handle strains, the hose is longer than this cart. The next stop is the hose reel cart capacity page.

Tap off before you rewind

Turn the tap off and open the spray gun so the hose goes soft before you crank it back. A pressurised hose kinks where it crosses a layer and can blow a connector off the inlet. CleverRoll S reviews include a connector that left the joint under pressure. Rewind only when the hose has collapsed. On Relaxdays, reviews say the reel will not spin until you disconnect the fixed inlet. Forcing an overfilled drum is how CleverRoll L reviews end with a broken handle. Stand in line with the cart and walk the hose on with your free hand. The CleverRoll M listing claims a fold-out foot. A Draper at 1.37 kg has less mass, so a sideways yank walks it across the patio.

Frost, the pond and the plumber

Before the first frost, drain the hose and take it off the outdoor tap. Hozelock's care page says to wash the cart, store it frost-free, and empty the hoses. Gardena titles claim frost resistance. That is a listing claim. Water left in a UK hose can still freeze, so open the gun, lift the far end, and walk the water out. WaterSafe says not to leave the hose in a pond, a bucket or a water butt. The double check valve belongs on the outside tap, and BS EN 806-5 is the prompt to replace check valves about every ten years. Call a WaterSafe plumber if that valve is missing, if the leak is inside the wall, or if fertiliser or insecticide will run through the hose. A temporary use ban in England and Wales still stops garden watering with any hosepipe, trolley included. If the cart was simply too small, the hose reel cart buying guide is the buying route.

Common questions

How do I wind the hose without kinks?
Lay the hose straight, fix the tap end, and crank slowly while your free hand guides each turn into a flat layer. On the Hozelock Plus, buyers who let go of the hose report kinks and a wheel that catches the coil. If a loop twists, pull that loop out and wind it again.
When do I fit the handle?
Fit it after you know which way the body faces, and before you trust a clip you cannot undo. Draper 25068 reviews say the handle goes on only when the body is the correct way around. On the empty Hozelock 2398, assume a clicked joint is permanent.
Should the tap be on while I rewind?
The tap should be off, and the gun should be open, so the hose is empty of pressure. Rewinding against mains pressure kinks the hose and can blow a connector, which is what CleverRoll S reviews describe. Open the gun, let the spray die, then crank.
Why does the reel not spin?
On Relaxdays, reviews say the reel will not spin until you disconnect the fixed inlet. A clip fitted the wrong way on a Draper, or a locked Hozelock joint, can jam the handle too. A broken CleverRoll L handle after overfilling is capacity, not technique.
When do I call a plumber?
Call a WaterSafe plumber if the outside tap has no double check valve, if the leak is in the wall, or if fertiliser or insecticide will run through the hose. Keep the hose end out of ponds and butts. A kink is a garden job. A hosepipe ban is a water-company notice.
