How to use a dirty water pump

Updated: 22 October 2026

How to use a dirty water pump, for these mains models, starts with a hose you buy separately, a float that can swing, and water cooled to the limit you can source. You then run it on a 30 mA RCD and unplug it before you lift it by the handle. The listings are on the [Güde dirty water pump comparison](/hub/garden-watering/guede-dirty-water-pump). Peter F. used the Güde manual, the Einhell UK page for the GC-DP 3325 and Electrical Safety First’s garden advice. There is no laboratory test. Fit the hose before it goes in the water

None of the twelve boxes includes a delivery hose. Fit the largest smooth hose the outlet will take, with clips that will not slip once the pump is under water. On the GC-DP 7835, an ordinary garden hose is a poor match. The Güde listing prints a male 1¼ inch thread and the manual a female thread, so match the adaptor to the port you can see. A kink or a climb above the stated head wastes the first run. Grain size is on the dirty water pump buying guide.

RCD, temperature and who stays out

Outdoor use needs a 30 mA RCD. Use a socket that already has that protection. The Güde manual and the Einhell UK page for the GC-DP 3325 both cap the liquid at 35 °C. A hot tub that is still hot is outside that rating. Keep people and animals out of the water while the pump is in. The Güde manual forbids a dry run, unattended running and circulation duty.

Float, base and the first minute

Lower the pump on a rope tied to the handle, onto a firm base, and keep the float free. The Clarke manual, for its own pumps, says never to lift by the mains lead or the float cable. A float trapped against the wall never starts, or never stops. Tying the float up so you can watch a puddle also lets the pump run dry once the water drops below the intake. Stay for the first minute. Switch off if the flow dies while the motor runs. If you feel a tingle, stop.

Lift it out and read the puddle

Unplug before you take the pump out. Lift by the handle, or by the rope on the handle. Expect a puddle. Güde’s English retailer page says the GS 4003 P leaves about 25 mm. Mop it. Do not keep restarting in a film of water. Stop as well if the room’s electrics were soaked or the water is about a metre deep. Who may receive that water is on pump water out of a cellar.

Common questions

What do I buy before I switch it on?
Buy a discharge hose, clips and the right thread adaptor. None of these twelve listings includes a hose. Reviews point to 25 mm on the GC-DP 3325 and away from a garden hose on the GC-DP 7835. You also need a 30 mA RCD on the outdoor socket, and water at or below 35 °C where the Güde manual or the Einhell UK page sets that cap. A rope for the handle is worth having before the pump is wet. Unplug before you submerge it.
How do I set the float?
Hang the pump so the float can rise and fall without touching the wall, the liner or the hose. Trapped down, it may never start. Trapped up, it may run after the water has gone. You can tie the float for a few minutes while you watch a shallow puddle. Do not tie it and leave. The Güde manual forbids unattended running and a dry run, and a locked float removes the automatic stop.
Can I pump a hot tub that is still hot?
Not above the limit you can source. The Güde manual and the Einhell UK page for the GC-DP 3325 both state 35 °C. Let the tub cool, keep people and animals out, and fit the hose first. These are drainage pumps. The Güde manual forbids circulation, so the tub is a one-time empty, not a filter loop you leave overnight.
How do I lift the pump out?
Unplug first. Lift by the handle or by a rope on that handle. Do not lift by the mains lead or the float cable. The Clarke manual states that ban for its own pumps, and it is the right habit here even though that sheet is not the Güde parts list. Drain the pump before you carry it indoors, and do not open it while it is plugged in.
Why is there still water on the floor?
This type leaves a layer. About 25 mm is what Güde’s English page describes for the GS 4003 P, and GC-DP 3325 reviews describe the last 20 to 30 mm. That is residual water, not the wrong speed setting. The GE-DP 7035 LL claims about 1 mm on a hard, level base. On mud or a slope, plan to mop. Chasing the film until the pump runs dry is the failure the manuals warn against.
What if I feel a tingle or a shock?
Stop. Unplug without standing in the water if you can reach a dry switch, keep people and animals clear, and do not put the pump back. Germany-labelled Güde reviews mention shocks. That is not a UK rate, and it is still a stop. Use a registered electrician on the pump, the RCD and the socket. A tingle is not a quirk of the water left on the floor.
When do I stop and call someone?
Call a registered electrician if you felt a shock, if sockets were under water, or if the RCD will not reset. For water about a metre deep, a cellar that refills as fast as you pump, or a discharge you are not allowed to make, stop using the portable pump. Which model was worth buying for mud is on the best dirty water pump page.
