Pump water out of a cellar

Updated: 22 October 2026

Rain has stopped and there is dirty water on the cellar floor. You can pump water out of a cellar with a portable mains pump when the volume is small, the water outside is already lower, and you have somewhere legal to put it. A deep flood, soaked electrics or a brook behind the house are reasons to wait. The listings are on the [Güde dirty water pump comparison](/hub/garden-watering/guede-dirty-water-pump). Peter F. used GOV.UK’s flood pages and the Güde GS 4003 P manual. There is no laboratory test and no invented call-out fee. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

When pumping helps and when it waits

GOV.UK’s guidance on adapting a home to flooding says to start serious pumping when the water outside is lower than the water inside. Empty a cellar while the ground outside is still higher, and water comes back through the floor and the walls. GOV.UK says water about one metre deep is the point to bring in a structural engineer. An electrician should check a flooded installation before you use an electric pump.

Where the water is allowed to go

GOV.UK’s help-during-a-flood page says a permit may be needed. Ask the Environment Agency about a river, stream or ditch, the water company about a public sewer, and the highways authority about a street drain. Do not pump onto a neighbour’s path. The fire and rescue service may pump in some floods and may charge. RPS 261 applies in England to clean rainwater from an excavation. It is not permission for a flooded house, and it does not apply in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. If you cannot name who has agreed to take the water, leave the pump in the box.

What a portable pump can and cannot be

These machines are portable tools for a one-off job. For muddy flood water, the useful class here is a stated 35 mm intake, such as the Einhell GC-DP 7835. A 5 mm listing, including the FOTING at about £39.99 that says not to use it in dirty water, is the wrong tool for silt. The GS 4003 P manual says it is not a permanent overflow for a cistern, a well or a cellar. The GS 4003 P and the GC-DP 3325 are 25 mm pumps, not for rubble. Particle size and the missing hose are on the dirty water pump buying guide.

When the pump is the wrong next step

A 10 metre climb the pump cannot make is a buying problem, and a legal ditch does not turn a 5 mm pump into a flood tool. If you cannot do the job, GOV.UK points to the fire and rescue service, which may pump and may charge. A pump bought this afternoon does not replace that call when the water is about a metre deep or the electrics have been under it. Hose and float steps stay on how to use a dirty water pump.

Common questions

Can I pump the cellar as soon as the rain stops?
Only if the water outside is already lower than the water inside. GOV.UK says to start hard pumping then, because pumping against higher groundwater pulls the flood straight back. Large volumes can take days, and groundwater in a cellar can last weeks. A shallow puddle from a leak is not that wait. At about one metre, speak to a structural engineer before you empty it.
Where can the water go?
Ask first. GOV.UK points the Environment Agency to a river, stream or ditch, the water company to a public sewer, and the highways authority to a street drain. A permit may be required. Do not send water onto someone else’s property. The fire and rescue service may pump in some incidents and may charge. No fee is stated here, because that GOV.UK page does not publish one.
Does RPS 261 let me pump into the brook?
No. RPS 261 is an England-only position for clean rainwater from an excavation, discharged to surface water, for no more than three consecutive months. It is not a permit for a flooded house, and it is not consent to pump polluted cellar water into a stream. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are outside that statement. Sewage, oil or road silt leaves clean rainwater immediately.
When do I need a structural engineer?
GOV.UK points to a structural engineer at about one metre of water, because removing that load quickly can stress walls and floors. A shallower one-off leak does not trigger that line by itself. If the cellar has flooded before, if you can see new cracks, or if the water is near that depth, get the engineer before a long pumping session. A portable pump does not inspect the structure.
Can I use the electric pump if the sockets were under water?
Have an electrician check the installation first. GOV.UK says that for a flooded home, and it says not to rely on electrics that have been wet. Do not operate switches while you stand in the water. Any generator stays outside. Germany-labelled shock comments on the Güde are not a UK rate. A tingle is still a stop, then a registered electrician.
Will the Güde stay in the sump all winter?
The GS 4003 P manual says it is not a permanent overflow for a cistern, a well or a cellar. It is a portable 25 mm machine for a short job, then it comes out. A sump that runs all winter needs a permanent installation, not this listing left on a float. The same manual rules out circulation and drinking water. A one-off muddy clear-out points at a 35 mm pump instead.
Is a 5 mm stainless pump enough for muddy flood water?
No. Five millimetres is the clean-water end of this set. The stainless FOTING at about £62.99 passes 5 mm, and the FOTING at about £39.99 says not to use it in dirty water. Muddy flood water wants a stated 35 mm intake for one job, then the pump comes out. Steel does not change the intake, and a 5 mm pump is still not a sewage pump.
