Pick brick or block, not a thin fence panel. Gardena’s UK support treats wall hose boxes as wall-mounted products. A fence is the wrong site. Check the feeder reaches the tap without stretching. Portable kits use a short feeder. Most wall kits claim a connecting hose. Leave side clearance for the roughly 180° swivel, and keep the rewind path clear of bins, bikes, and play. Manuals tell you to stay clear while the hose retracts. Prefer a drip path you can see, not a hidden cavity. If the only wall is a fence or flimsy cladding, stop and choose patio, spike, Dual, or portable. Length and mount sit on the buying guide. If you cannot drill at all, start on wall-mounted or portable before you mark holes.
Wall bracket in order
Have the kit’s screws, plugs, and mounting aid, plus a spirit level, tape, and an 8 mm masonry bit. Manuals commonly use 8 mm for the bracket holes. Confirm that against the sheet in your kit. Mark the three fixing points with the bracket held level, drill to the plug depth, and clear the dust. Gardena wall manuals describe cement or plaster plugs for walls with up to about 1 cm of plaster. Hollow block, cladding, or weak mortar may need different anchors. An uneven surface can stress the bracket, so pack it or choose a flatter course. Seat the bracket, check level, and tighten. Hook or slide the box on as the manual shows, then fit the locking screws so rewind pull cannot lift it off. Connect the feeder with the washers seated, open the tap briefly, and check the joints. Depressurise after a session if the manual asks. Never open the spring housing to help the rewind.
If you cannot use a house wall
Patio RollUp models use a patio or universal mount on hard standing. Level the base and follow the kit’s fixings into a stable slab. The Patio RollUp S 15 m is that fork: automatic rewind, about 7.66 kg, not a house-wall drill. Spike units need firm ground. Soft soil invites wobble when the hose pulls sideways. A Dual that claims wall-or-portable still needs you to read which mode you are using. It is not a licensed fence mount for a wall-only sibling. Portable Move and MoveMatic skip structural drilling. Connect the short feeder, water, then crank or auto-rewind, and store the box where the lease allows. The Portable Move is the light crank option at about 2.04 kg. Undercover adds digging and possible pipeline work. Call before you dig if cables may sit under the path.
First use checks
Pull the hose out fully once with the tap off, then let it retract while you keep clear. If it stops short, pull it out fully and retry. Do not force the casing. Where the model has locking intervals, check they engage mid-garden. After a short pressurised test, a drip at a washer is usually reseating, not a reason to open the drum. If it still will not retract, confirm the box is locked to the bracket, the path is clear, and the hose is not twisted behind the guide. Persistent jams belong with the seller or Gardena support.

Wall RollUp manuals and common installer guides use an 8 mm masonry bit for the bracket holes. Confirm against the sheet in your specific kit before you drill. Clear the dust so the plugs seat fully.
Are the supplied plugs OK for my wall?
They suit the cement or plaster case described in the manual, about 1 cm of plaster. Hollow block, cladding, or weak mortar may need different anchors. Match the fixing to the wall, not only to the bag in the box.
How much side clearance for the swivel?
Leave room for the box to pivot through its stated swivel, roughly 180° on many wall RollUps, so the hose can reach beds on both sides without scraping brick edges or pipework.
Can I mount on a fence panel?
Not as a substitute for a solid wall on wall-only products. Gardena support frames wall boxes as wall-mounted. Use patio, spike, Dual, or portable options when brick is unavailable.
How do I fit a spike or patio box instead?
Level and fix a patio base on hard standing, or drive a spike into firm ground per the kit. Do not treat those mounts as identical to a wall bracket sequence. Follow the sheet for that model.
Where should the box sit relative to the tap?
Close enough that the connecting or feeder hose reaches without stretch, with a visible drip path and clear rewind space. Height should let you pull hose without stooping into the drum every time.
Do I open the casing to service the spring?
No. Maker guidance is not to open the spring housing. Faulty rewind after a correct install is a support or returns issue, not a reason to prise the cover.
What if the hose will not retract after install?
Confirm the box is locked on the bracket, clear the path, pull the hose fully out, and retry. If it still fails, stop forcing the mechanism and contact the seller or Gardena support.
