Gardena hose box frost and winter

Updated: 22 October 2026

The amazon.co.uk bullet says frost-proof, the box is already on the wall, and a hard UK freeze is on the forecast. This page separates Gardena hose box frost claims from the manual rule that still matters: empty the hose and depressurise before outdoor winter leave. It does not rank listings. Prices stay on the [Gardena hose box comparison](/hub/garden-watering/gardena-hose-box). Peter F. set the listing frost lines against maker storage notes. There was no lab freeze test. Frost-proof on the box, water still inside

Gardena wall RollUp listings often claim frost protection and year-round outdoor leave. That wording is about materials and a maker frost system, not a promise that pressurised water can sit in the hose through ice nights. RollUp manuals still tell you to empty the hose and leave the system depressurised if the box stays outside. Treating frost-proof as leave the tap open and the drum charged is the myth this page exists to stop. A frost bullet is not a pressurised winter licence. If a retailer blurb and the PDF manual disagree, follow the manual. Mounting steps stay on how to install.

Empty and depressurise

Shut the outside tap. Open the nozzle so residual pressure escapes. Walk the hose out far enough to drain, tip water from low points, and let the RollUp retract while you keep clear. Disconnect the feeder if that isolates the box cleanly, and leave connectors open so a trapped pocket can finish draining. Do not open the spring housing to dry the mechanism. After draining, you may leave many wall, patio, and spike boxes outdoors in a depressurised state. That is the manual’s outdoor-winter path, not a shop slogan. Portable Move and MoveMatic can come indoors if you have space. You still empty them.

Undercover and pipelines

Undercover kits add a hidden housing and, on some listings, pipeline connections. Gardena’s UK support article is blunt: the box is not meant to sit pressurised in frost, and if you use a pipeline you empty the entire pipeline for winter. Hiding the drum does not hide ice expansion in a closed line. The Undercover RollUp M 20 m is about £218.95 with 4.6 from 57 reviews. The listing frost field was not captured, so the table says not stated. Support wording still rejects pressurised winter leave. Keep a note of any pipeline route for the autumn drain-down, and call a professional if that pipework is tied into irrigation you did not install. A wall box without a pipeline still needs an empty hose.

The tap is a different frost problem

The hose box is only half of the outdoor water story. WaterSafe guidance on outside taps pushes a double check valve for backflow protection and sensible replacement intervals for assemblies that age in service. A frozen check valve is a plumbing problem. A RollUp frost bullet does not repair it. Isolate the outdoor tap in your household’s usual way, such as an insulating cover or the indoor stopcock, separately from draining the hose. If the wall is damp or backflow protection is missing, call a WaterSafe plumber. Do not submerge hose ends in butts or ponds. That is a contamination habit, not winter storage.

Bans are not winter storage

A temporary use ban can restrict watering a garden with a hosepipe in a dry spell. Ofwat explains temporary use and non-essential use bans for UK customers. An enclosed Gardena hose box does not create an exemption. That rule is about when you may run the hose, not about ice in the drum in January. Empty and depressurise even if last summer had no ban, and check your water company before the next drought. When the hose is empty, the system is depressurised, and the tap is protected, the winter job for this category is done. Revisit length and mount only when you replace the kit, via the buying guide.

Common questions

Can it stay on the wall all winter?
Often yes, if the hose is empty and the system is depressurised, as RollUp manuals describe. Frost-proof bullets do not mean leave it charged with water.
What does frost-proof mean on the listing?
It is a maker claim about frost protection materials or systems for outdoor leave. It is not permission to store the hose under pressure through freezes. If the listing and the PDF manual disagree, follow the manual for storage.
How do I empty the hose?
Close the tap, release pressure at the nozzle, drain the line, retract carefully, and disconnect the feeder if that isolates the box cleanly. Leave connectors open so a trapped pocket can finish draining. Do not open the spring housing.
Does Undercover need different care?
Yes if a pipeline is connected: empty the entire pipeline as well as depressurising. Gardena’s UK support wording still rejects pressurised winter leave. Hiding the drum does not change ice expansion in a closed water line.
Should I disconnect from the tap?
Disconnecting the feeder is a clean way to isolate many setups. Follow your model’s storage notes and your tap’s winter isolation habit, such as an insulating cover or the indoor stopcock.
What about the double check valve on the tap?
That is a separate backflow and frost-risk item on the outside tap. WaterSafe guidance still applies. A hose-box frost claim does not replace a double check valve or a call to a WaterSafe plumber if the wall is leaking.
Does a hosepipe ban change winter storage?
No. Bans govern when you may water with a hosepipe. Winter storage is still empty-and-depressurise regardless of last summer’s restrictions.
Can I open the box to dry the spring?
No. Do not open the spring housing. Drain from the hose and connectors only. Prising the casing for winter care is a safety and warranty problem, not a drying step.
