How to fit a garden hose to an outdoor tap

Updated: 22 October 2026

The expandable kit is on the doorstep and the bag of adapters looks more American than British. How to fit a garden hose to an outdoor tap is mostly measurement, washer seating and a slow first pressurisation. Measure the tap thread

Before you open the nozzle bag, measure the outdoor tap. UK outdoor taps are usually three-quarter inch BSP, or older half-inch BSP. Hozelock's guide uses outside diameters of roughly 21 mm for half-inch BSP and about 26.4 mm for three-quarter inch BSP. A cloth tape around the male thread beats guessing from a photo. Many expandable kits claim both adapter sizes yet still mention US outdoor taps. Several Flexi Hose listings in this set do that. US garden-hose thread is not BSP. If the collar will not start by hand, stop. Do not cross-thread with pliers. Buy a named BSP tap connector rather than trusting a universal claim written for another market. Check for a double check valve. WaterSafe advises that hose-capable outdoor taps need compliant protection under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations. Fitting a hose does not install that valve. If the tap is undocumented, or you suspect contamination after a submerged hose end, call a WaterSafe plumber.

Fit, flush, then let it expand

Work with the tap closed. Seat the rubber washer flat in the tap connector. A twisted or missing washer is the usual sideways spray. Hand-tighten, then a gentle nudge if the maker allows. A full spanner attack crushes the washer. Attach the hose and the spray gun. Keep the gun shut. Open the tap slowly and walk the hose out as it fills. Expandable sleeves need pressure to approach their feet claim. An open jet can leave the hose short. Close the gun, let the sleeve stretch, then flush for half a minute into a bucket so packing dust leaves the line before it hits seedlings. If the hose will not reach the bed, check for kinks, a half-open tap, or a jacket caught on a fence. Low mains pressure can undershoot a 50 ft or 100 ft claim. Do not run an expandable fabric hose on a pressure-washer outlet.

Fix leaks and accessory mismatches

Sideways mist at the tap almost always means reseat or replace the washer. PTFE tape can help when the maker allows it, but it will not fix a US thread forced onto BSP. If the connector spins without biting, change the adapter. Leaks at the gun are often a missing O-ring, or a gun that expects click fittings while the hose ends are threaded. Many expandable kits lock you into the supplied nozzle. A Hozelock click gun may need an extra adaptor. Buy the matching connector rather than forcing plastic ears until they crack. Pinholes along the sleeve are a different problem. Tape patches rarely last on expandable fabric. Replace the hose. UV, frost and leaving the jacket pressurised overnight all shorten life.

Drain, store, and the double check valve

When you finish, close the tap, open the gun to depressurise, disconnect, and lift the hose so water runs out. Expandable hoses should shrink once empty. Left outdoors and full in frost, ice can split the core. Which? advises indoor winter storage when you have the space. Do not leave the hose end submerged in a water butt, pond or flooded border. The kits here do not include a double check valve. WaterSafe cites replacement practice around ten years for some check valves under BS EN 806-5. A hose listing does not fix that. If a Temporary Use Ban is active, fitting the hose correctly does not override the company notice.

Stop when the thread will not start

If the collar starts by hand, the washer sits flat, and the gun stays shut while the sleeve fills, you have done the fitting job. If the thread never bites, change to a named BSP connector rather than forcing it. If the tap has no obvious backflow protection, or you have submerged the hose end, that is a WaterSafe plumber, not another adapter from the bag.

Common questions

How do I know if my tap is 1/2 or 3/4 BSP?
Measure the outside diameter of the male outdoor-tap thread. Roughly 21 mm points to half-inch BSP. About 26.4 mm points to three-quarter inch BSP, following Hozelock's sizing guide. When unsure, take both numbers to a DIY trade counter with a photo of the tap.
Do I need PTFE tape?
Only when the connector instructions allow it and the threads are the correct family. Tape will not convert US garden-hose thread into BSP. Fix the adapter match first, then use tape only as the maker describes.
How do I get an expandable hose to full length?
Close the gun, open the tap fully, and let pressure stretch the sleeve. Clear kinks and snags. Weak mains pressure can still leave you short of the feet claim. Measure your real path next time before you buy a longer title.
Can I keep it connected all winter?
No. Depressurise, drain, disconnect and store expandable hoses indoors when you can. Trapped water and frost split cores quickly.
Does the kit include a double check valve?
These expandable kits are hose and fittings, not a backflow device for the house. Hose-capable outdoor taps need compliant protection. Ask a WaterSafe plumber if your tap is undocumented or old. A new washer does not install that valve.
Why will my old spray gun not click on?
Many expandable kits use threaded ends and their own nozzle. Click systems such as Hozelock need matching connectors. Buy the right adaptor rather than forcing the gun. Plastic ears that snap are a recurring failure on cheap collars.
