Garden hose buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have an outdoor tap, a bed that needs water, and a search page full of feet claims, bar ratings and universal adapters. This garden hose buying guide puts the checks in the right order: measure the walked path, choose construction, then match bore and tap thread before you open any product table. Live prices and the ten expandable kits sit on the [garden hose comparison](/hub/garden-watering/garden-hose). Peter F. checked the amazon.co.uk listings captured on 19 October 2026. Measure the route, not the title

Walk from the tap to the furthest bed along the path you will actually take, around the shed rather than through the flower bed. Add two to three metres of slack so the hose is not stretched taut around a corner. That number, not the largest feet figure on amazon.co.uk, is what you should shop. Expandable titles advertise the long state under pressure. Low mains pressure, an open jet, or a kinked jacket can leave you short of the claim. Reinforced PVC coils sold in metres stay near their marked length. A route of about 12–15 m can suit a 50 ft expandable claim when pressure is decent. A true 40–50 m run on gravel belongs on a length hub and a braided coil. Joining two short hoses adds leak points. One measured hose is usually cleaner.

Type before brand

Decide construction before you fall for a brand tile. Expandable fabric-sleeve hoses pack into a bag and feel light when empty. They need draining and indoor winter storage, and UK reviews often report pinholes and early splits. Reinforced braided PVC handles abrasion, sprinklers and longer duty better, though it needs a reel or wall bracket. Short spiral sets suit patio pots. A soaker hose and a wheeled reel cart are different products, and carts were removed from this comparison on purpose. BBC Gardeners' World and Which? frame expandable kits as storage-friendly, with a shorter typical lifespan than reinforced hose, and both warn against a pressure-washer outlet. Light bed watering can stay in this set. Weekly sprinkler duty over stone belongs on reinforced PVC. That fork is on expandable vs reinforced garden hose.

Bore and the tap thread

Domestic garden hose in the UK is often about 12.5–13 mm (half an inch), enough for most short borders. Step up toward 19 mm (three-quarter inch) on a long path, a sprinkler, or when the jet collapses at the far end. Extra length in a thin bore wastes pressure. UK outdoor taps commonly take a three-quarter inch BSP connector. Older properties may still use half an inch. Hozelock's sizing guidance uses outside diameters around 21 mm for half-inch BSP and about 26.4 mm for three-quarter inch BSP. Many expandable kits claim both adapter sizes yet still mention US outdoor taps. That is not proof of BSP fit. Prefer metal collars and spare washers. Seating the washer is covered in how to fit a garden hose. A max 12 bar line is a burst ceiling, not working spray pressure at your tap.

What this guide will not decide

This guide does not crown a top pick among the ten expandable listings, and it does not walk through a first flush. It also does not say whether mains hosepipe use is lawful this week in your postcode. Temporary Use Bans are company-by-company. Ofwat explains that cans and buckets usually remain allowed while hosepipe watering may be banned. Check your undertaker before you buy a hose you cannot legally run. The notice rules are on garden hose and a hosepipe ban. Price bands in this October 2026 snapshot run roughly £14–£20 for entry expandables, about £24–£30 in the middle of the set, and up to about £40 for the dearest 100 ft kit. Treat those as orientation, not a market census.

Write the three answers down first

Write down a measured length, a type, and a BSP check, then open the comparison. If you want one named pick inside this expandable set, use best garden hose UK. If the route is gravel, roses, or a true 30–50 m coil, leave the set for a reinforced length hub.

Common questions

How long a hosepipe do I need?
Measure the walked path from the outdoor tap to the furthest watering point and add two to three metres of slack. Shop that number. Expandable feet titles are the pressurised length claim, not a guarantee under weak mains pressure.
Will an Amazon kit fit my BSP tap?
Only if the adapters match your measured half-inch or three-quarter inch BSP thread. US outdoor-tap wording on a listing is a warning, not a fit guarantee. Measure the tap outside diameter and test-seat the washer before you force a connection.
Do I need a reel as well?
Expandable kits usually bag away without a reel. Reinforced coils need a wall bracket, cassette or cart if you water often. Reel carts are a separate product type and were removed from this comparison.
What if there is a hosepipe ban?
A Temporary Use Ban from your water company can make mains hosepipe watering unlawful in that area. Watering cans and buckets usually remain allowed. Check the company notice, not a UK-wide rumour. A hose purchase does not create an exemption.
Can I join two shorter hoses instead?
You can, but every joint is a leak and a pressure-loss point. One correctly measured hose is usually cleaner. If you join kits, use matching connectors and spare washers, and expect weaker flow at the far gun.
