Centrifugal pump buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

Amazon.co.uk titles all say centrifugal while the numbers pull in opposite directions. This centrifugal pump buying guide is the reject list: water quality, the duty point, priming, and the plug. The seven listings sit on the [centrifugal pump comparison](/hub/garden-watering/centrifugal-pump). Who each listing is for is on the [best centrifugal pump](/hub/garden-watering/centrifugal-pump/sub/centrifugal-pump-best) page, and the two geometries are on [centrifugal vs peripheral pump](/hub/garden-watering/centrifugal-pump/sub/centrifugal-pump-vs-peripheral). Flow and head are not one number

Maximum flow and maximum head are opposite ends of a pump curve. You do not get 239 litres per minute and 14 m of head at the same time on the Clarke ECP15A1. UK Flow Centre’s garden guide puts the job first: the flow you need at the head you have. About 10.2 m of head is 1 bar for cool water, as a rule of thumb, not a lab result for these ASINs. If the head sum sits near 12 m and you need volume, read the ECP15A1’s stated 2–14 m band. If it sits nearer 30–40 m and one hose at 35–45 L/min is enough, the peripheral pattern is the match.

Water, suction, and priming

Both KATSU listings and the Pedrollo rows limit the pump to clean water without abrasive particles. Pond silt, toilet waste, and heating water are other products. The Clarke ECP15A1 and CEB103 extracts ask about clean water and do not answer, so treat that as unknown. A strainer does not turn dirty water into a clean-water pump. Stated suction is 7 m on the Pedrollo rows and 8 m on the KATSU pair. Those figures are ceilings, not targets. Both KATSU models say they are not self-priming. The Clarke and Pedrollo files do not claim it either. A standard centrifugal cannot clear a dry suction line by itself. Fill the casing, keep the suction tight, and use a foot valve if the water sits below the pump. The step order sits on how to prime a centrifugal pump.

Supply, shelter, and the mains

UK mains are nominally 230 V. Several kept listings say 220 V. That is a common European nameplate, not proof of a fitted BS 1363 plug. None of these files state the plug type, so check the lead. Pedrollo states IP X4: splash protection, not a motor that can sit in British rain. Cover the pump, drain it before frost, and run outdoor portable equipment through a 30 mA RCD. A rain-only butt is not a mains connection. In England and Wales, the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, regulation 5, require notice before a pump drawing more than 12 litres per minute is connected to a supply pipe, and before a garden watering system that is not operated by hand. Hose taps need backflow protection matched to the risk. If the pipe is mains, use a plumber or the water company. Abstraction from a river or groundwater over about 20 cubic metres a day in England is an Environment Agency question; a butt of roof water is not that act.

Where the seven listings sit

Under £80 the saved extracts hold two KATSU peripherals: the 151112 at about £49.99 (35 L/min, 35 m) and the 151116 at about £69.99 (45 L/min, 45 m). Both are clean-water only and not self-priming. The 151112 has the thickest review file and the rust complaints. Mid prices are the ECP15A1 at about £125.92 for 2–14 m volume, the CPm 130 at about £140.57 in AISI 316L, and the CEB103 at about £144.20 with a 35/35 brass claim. The CPm132-ST4 at about £220.25 and the CPm158-ST4 at about £256.07 have no UK reviews and bullets up to 270 L/min and 45 m. The 151116 is the top pick for pressure, the 151112 is best value with a rust warning, and the ECP15A1 is the short-lift volume tool.

Common questions

What flow and head do I need for one hose?
Estimate the lift from water to outlet, add the pressure the nozzle or sprinkler wants, and add a little for pipe loss. Convert sprinkler demand from litres per hour to litres per minute. Then pick a pump whose curve still has margin at that point. Do not buy from the two maxima on the title alone.
Can a pump deliver maximum flow and maximum head together?
No. Those figures are opposite ends of the curve. The Clarke ECP15A1’s 239 L/min sits with a 2–14 m head band. A KATSU’s 35 or 45 m head sits with a much lower flow. Size the duty you will actually run.
How do I tell a peripheral from a high-flow centrifugal?
Read the pair of numbers. Roughly 35–45 L/min with 35–45 m head is the peripheral pattern. Hundreds of litres per minute with a low teen head is the volume centrifugal. Both titles may still say centrifugal. The split is spelled out on the versus page.
Does this listing say the pump is self-priming?
Both KATSU models say they are not. The Clarke and Pedrollo extracts in this set do not claim that they are. If the answer is blank, assume you must fill the casing.
Is 7 or 8 m of suction a target?
It is a ceiling. Real vertical lift is shorter once hose rise, strainer clogging, and joint leaks are counted. Keep the pump as low and as close to the water as you safely can.
What changes if the water has grit or leaves?
Clean-water pumps are the wrong tool. A strainer is first aid for leaves, not a licence to pump silt. Look for a dirty-water or drainage pump instead of forcing a peripheral through grit.
When does a garden pump need notice to the water company?
In England and Wales, regulation 5 bites when a pump over 12 L/min connects to a supply pipe, or when a non-hand garden watering system does. A rain-only butt beside the house is a different layout. Confirm with your water company if a mains top-up or a booster is involved.
