How to use a hose reel cart

Updated: 22 October 2026

The first crank will tell you whether the lay is straight. How to use a hose reel cart comes down to a leader with slack, a hose wound without crosses, and water emptied before you rewind or before a frost. This guide is from Peter F., editor for DIY & tools. The steps follow Hozelock’s care notes, Easy Garden Irrigation’s reel set-up, and WaterSafe’s outside-tap advice. We did not film a lab rewind. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The carts are on the [50m hose reel cart comparison](/hub/garden-watering/50m-hose-reel-cart). If a ban is on your bill, read [hosepipe ban and hose reel](/hub/garden-watering/50m-hose-reel-cart/sub/50m-hose-reel-cart-hosepipe-ban) before you connect anything.

Before you turn the tap on

Check two things before the crank. Whether your water company bans watering a garden with a hosepipe: a new cart does not change that use. And whether the outside tap has a double check valve, indoors or where frost will not split it. WaterSafe’s advice is to keep that valve in place, not to leave the hose in a water butt or a pond while it is on the mains, and to run the hose cool before you fit a spray gun. If you cannot see a double check valve, or you add fertiliser or weedkiller through the hose, use a plumber. Capacity rules stay in the hose reel cart buying guide.

Fit the leader and the hose

The leader is the short hose from the outside tap to the cart. It needs a washer in each joint and enough slack that the cart does not yank the tap. There is no universal length. One related Hozelock listing used about 1.5 metres as an example. Measure from the tap to the wheels, then add spare for a turn. Seat the inlet on the drum side. Unroll a new hose, let stiff plastic soften, fit the end inside the drum, and wind without crosses. Easy Garden Irrigation describes that sequence for reels. On the Draper cart, set the hose to leave left or right before the clips lock. Reviews describe those clips as one-way. On the empty Hozelock, the support spring is easy to fit the wrong way round.

Rewind and a cart that walks

Water left in 50 metres of hose is the usual reason the handle will not turn. Drain it before you crank. Walk it out so the water runs to the gun, or lift loops until the pipe is light, then wind. On the Ultramax kit, reviews say the hose is heavy to rewind and that the stand can tip. If the cart walks toward you, put a foot on the stand or the fold-out foot. Gardena claims that foot. Pull the hose straight off the drum. If the cart falls over, rewind the loose loops before you try again. Which hose is on the drum is the hose reel cart with or without hose fork.

Frost and when to stop

Before a frost, turn the tap off, open the nozzle, take the hose off the outdoor tap, and store the cart where frost will not reach it. Hozelock’s drain-and-store notes apply here. Do not copy Auto Reel wall-latch steps onto a trolley. A closed gun can hold water that splits a fitting, so the nozzle stays open while the cart dries. Call a plumber if you cannot find a double check valve, if you dose chemicals through the hose, or if the swivel still leaks after new washers. A fresh washer is a fair first try on a reported Gardena weep. In spring, run the pipe through before you spray.

Common questions

Where does the leader hose go?
From the outside tap to the inlet on the cart, with a washer in the joint and slack so the wheels can move without loading the tap. The garden hose then leaves from the outlet side of the drum. If the leader is bar-tight, the first strong pull is what loosens the tap, not a fault in the crank.
How do I wind 50 m without a twist?
Lay the hose out straight, let a new hose soften, fix the end inside the drum, and wind in even layers with no crosses. Gardena’s metal guide is there to help that lay. If you wind a hose that is still coiled from the packet, the twist stays in the drum and shows up as a kink at full stretch.
Why will the handle not turn?
The hose is usually still full of water, or the layers have crossed. Drain it, then rewind. On the Ultramax kit, reviews describe a heavy crank when the 50 metre hose is full, and draining is the first fix. Forcing the handle bends the crank before it frees a trapped loop.
Do I drain it before winter?
Yes. Tap off, nozzle open, hose off the outdoor tap, cart in a frost-free place. Hozelock’s care notes say the same for its hoses. A closed nozzle can trap water that freezes and splits a connector. Do that drain before the first hard frost, not after a fitting has already cracked.
The instruction sheet is only pictures. What is the one check before the clips lock?
Check which way the hose will leave the drum, left or right, and that the feed is not twisted. On the Draper cart the clips are described as irreversible once they lock. On the empty Hozelock, check the support spring before you tighten the frame. A picture sheet still has a wrong way round.
When do I stop and call a plumber?
When you cannot see a double check valve, when you put chemicals through the hose, or when the swivel leaks after new washers. Building the cart and changing a washer are garden jobs. Anything that might let garden water back into the mains is not.
