Expandable garden hose leaking: washer, split or gun

Updated: 22 October 2026

Water is leaving your expandable garden hose somewhere it should not, or the spray gun has stopped shutting off. The useful first step is the place the water appears, not a new hose. A washer drip is a short check. A jet from the middle of the jacket, or a moulded end that weeps, is a retailer problem, not a tape repair on a latex core. This sits beside the [50m flexible garden hose comparison](/hub/garden-watering/50m-flexible-garden-hose). Peter F. used the saved amazon.co.uk reviews from 20 October 2026 and the Consumer Rights Act 2015. There was no pressure test of a split hose. Where the water is coming from

Three places cover most of the complaints in this set. At the tap joint, look for a missing or grit-filled washer, a cross-thread, or a cracked plastic body. A new washer is the first fix. MOXTOYU includes three rubber washers. LUFENG and Tafunkun do not itemise them. Seat the washer flat and tighten by hand plus a small nip. If the drip stops, the hose is not finished. At the moulded end, where the connector joins the tube, a weep is not a washer job. LUFENG’s first 50 UK reviews describe leaks at the tap end or the gun end after light use or within a season. Turn the tap off. In the middle of the jacket, a jet or a wet bulge is the inner tube. Do not tape a pressurised latex core. Shut the water off and take it out of use. How a sound hose should be filled and drained is on how to use an expandable garden hose.

The gun can die while the hose is fine

LUFENG’s 9-pattern gun is a separate failure in those reviews. Guns crack, will not lock, or spray from every setting while the tube is still intact. A dead gun does not mean the hose is scrap. If the jacket is dry, a replacement nozzle is the proportionate try. If the gun end of the hose itself is the leak, a new gun will not fix the moulded joint. LUFENG’s title says solid brass fittings. Reviewers in that first 50 often say the parts are plastic, painted alloy or aluminium. MOXTOYU and Tafunkun say copper-plated, which is a coating. If the metal is not what the title promised and the joint then fails, tell the retailer.

What “it does not last” means in these reviews

Which? says expandable hoses often have a short life if snagged, overstretched or frozen. That is care advice, not a tested life for these three ASINs. LUFENG’s 4.1 from 3,343 reviews is the only large sample here. Inside the first 50 UK texts, connector leaks, mid-hose splits and gun failures recur, often inside a season or two years. A minority report two to five years when they avoid sun, brick corners and pulling by the gun. MOXTOYU has no second season in the saved reviews. Tafunkun has no reviews at all. Who you claim against

The claim is against the retailer under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. You have 30 days to reject goods that are faulty. After that, the trader gets one chance to repair or replace before a price reduction or a final refund. In the first six months a fault is assumed to have been present unless the trader proves otherwise, or the misuse is obvious. England, Wales and Northern Ireland generally give six years to bring a claim. Scotland’s limit is different, so check before you rely on that figure. If the tap or the pipe in the wall is leaking, that is a plumber, not a hose return.

Common questions

Why is water coming out at the tap joint?
Usually a washer, grit, or a cross-thread. Fit a flat washer, clean the joint, and tighten it without stripping the thread. MOXTOYU supplies three washers. If the drip is where the connector is moulded into the tube, a washer will not stop it. That joint needs the tap off and a note to the retailer.
Why is there a jet from the middle of the fabric?
The inner latex has split or been punctured under the jacket. LUFENG reviews describe that fault, sometimes after a brick edge or a pull on the gun, sometimes earlier. Turn the water off. Do not tape a pressurised core and keep spraying. The hose is out of service until the retailer responds.
The gun broke. Is the hose finished?
Not always. LUFENG reviews include guns that crack or will not lock while the tube is still sound. A replacement gun is reasonable if the jacket is dry and the leak is in the nozzle. If water leaves at the moulded gun end, the hose end has failed and a new gun will not seal it.
The listing said brass and the fitting is not. What can I do?
Tell the retailer that the goods do not match the description, and describe the leak if there is one. LUFENG’s title says solid brass, and reviewers often report plastic or painted alloy. The Consumer Rights Act claim sits with the seller. A coating described as copper-plated, on the other two listings, is a different wording.
It lasted a year and split. Is that a fault or wear?
It can be either. Early connector failure is the fault pattern in the LUFENG sample. A split after the hose was pulled by the gun, dragged on brick, or left full in frost is the wear pattern Which? describes. Say which history is true. After 30 days the retailer may repair or replace once before a refund. Do not assume a refund is automatic at a year.
