50m flexible garden hose: what to check before you pay

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have measured a long back garden, typed “50m flexible garden hose”, and amazon.co.uk has opened a 150 ft expandable kit at £26.99, £29.99 or £44.99. The number in the search and the number on the box are not the same length. This buying guide is the check before you pay: route, tap thread, then what the listing actually prints. The [50m flexible garden hose comparison](/hub/garden-watering/50m-flexible-garden-hose) places the three saved listings side by side. Peter F. used those amazon.co.uk pages and public UK sources. Updated 22 October 2026. There was no pressure test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What “50m” means on an expandable listing

A 50 m flexible garden hose, as the search is written, is 50 metres of hose. The three kits in this set are 150 ft expandables. One hundred and fifty feet is 45.72 m. Tafunkun also prints 45 m and 4,500 cm. A true 50 m hose is about 164 ft. LUFENG and MOXTOYU state 50 ft with the water off and 150 ft when filled. Tafunkun does not give an empty length as a number. Hozelock’s Superhoze notes treat the advertised size as the expanded length with the nozzle closed, and they say that below about 2 bar the hose may not reach it. If the far bed is near 45 m, allow slack, or buy a fixed hose that stays put. The fill sequence is on how to use an expandable garden hose.

Measure the route and the tap

Walk from the outside tap around the corners you will actually use, not across the lawn in a straight line. Then measure the tap thread, because the inch name is not the ruler reading. Hozelock’s tap guide puts a common outdoor tap at 3/4 inch BSP, about 26.5 mm across the outside of the thread, and an older tap at 1/2 inch BSP, about 21 mm. All three listings claim both sizes. LUFENG’s title adds “solid brass”. The first 50 UK reviews often describe plastic, painted alloy or aluminium instead. MOXTOYU and Tafunkun say copper-plated, which is a coating on another metal. A flat rubber washer matters more than the colour of the fitting. MOXTOYU itemises three washers and PTFE tape. LUFENG and Tafunkun do not itemise washers. A split in the tube is a different fault, covered on the leaks and lifespan page.

Construction worth reading

These pages claim dual latex (LUFENG) or four-layer latex (MOXTOYU and Tafunkun), plus polyester at 3300D or 3750D. Denier is seller text, not a British Standard. No hot-water limit appears in the technical tables. MOXTOYU’s page asks about hot water and does not answer. One LUFENG review says the paper sheet says not to run hot water through it. LUFENG and MOXTOYU print a maximum of 12 bar. Tafunkun does not state a pressure. “Kink-free” is an aim. The LUFENG reviews still describe shrink-back and splits.

When this search is the wrong hose

Stay with one of these kits if you can bag a hose near 45 m, you water pots, borders or a car, and you accept that the spraying length is shorter than the closed-nozzle claim. Who each listing suits is on the best expandable garden hose page. Leave the search if the tape shows a real 50 m route, if you want a sprinkler to stay at the far end, or if the hose will live outside through frost. The box does not include a double check valve. Water Regs UK expects backflow protection on a hose tap, often a double check valve indoors for a typical garden without chemicals. If you will add feed or a buried line and the tap has no protection, that is a plumber’s job, not a hose feature.

Common questions

Is a 150 ft expandable hose 50 m?
No. One hundred and fifty feet is 45.72 m. The listings in this set say 150 ft, and one also prints 45 m. A 50 m hose is about 164 ft. If your route is the full 50 m, these kits are short of it even at their stated expanded length, and they shorten further once you open the spray.
What thread is a normal UK outside tap?
Most outdoor taps are 3/4 inch BSP, about 26.5 mm across the thread, and older taps are often 1/2 inch BSP, about 21 mm. The inch name is not the millimetre you read on a ruler. All three listings claim both sizes. Measure your tap before you rely on the word “universal”.
Does “solid brass” on a listing mean the fitting is brass?
Not on the evidence in this file. LUFENG’s title says solid brass, and reviewers in the first 50 UK texts often call the fittings plastic, painted alloy or aluminium. MOXTOYU and Tafunkun say copper-plated, which is a coating. A washer in the joint matters more than the metal word on the title.
What pressure does an expandable hose need?
Hozelock says an expandable hose may not reach its advertised length below about 2 bar, and that the advertised length is the expanded length. LUFENG claims expansion at 3–12 bar. Easy Garden Irrigation puts many home taps around 1–5.5 bar. The 12 bar line on two listings is a stated maximum, not the pressure at your tap.
Do I need a double check valve as well as the hose?
These boxes do not include one. In England and Wales, the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 require backflow protection matched to the risk. Water Regs UK describes a double check valve, usually indoors, for a typical garden tap on newer premises. If you will add chemicals or buried irrigation, ask a plumber before you fit the hose.
