Best secateurs UK

Updated: 22 October 2026

Search results for the best secateurs UK often name a Felco, a Kent & Stowe, or an Okatsune that is not in this basket. You want one pair for ordinary live pruning, plus a cheaper alternative, and a reason to leave both on the page. This shortlist uses the twelve amazon.co.uk listings in the [secateurs comparison](/hub/garden-tree-and-hedge-shears/secateurs), read by Peter F. on 21 October 2026. We did not run a cutting test, and no model here is the best secateur in Britain. Each pick says who it is for and who should skip it. What best can mean here

Best on this page means a bypass for live green wood, a named lock, a cut you can read, and a review count large enough to sit beside the stars. The Kynup V-11 is the top pick, and the WORKPRO 200 mm is the best value, because £7.99 on a named 19 mm bypass with 1,755 reviews is a different job from the highest score. Skip both if the wood is dead or your grip needs several smaller squeezes. BBC Gardeners' World puts Okatsune 103 and a Kent & Stowe bypass at the top of their own scores, with Felco 8 at an RRP of £65. The Guardian, on 11 April 2025, quoted a Felco 2 from £55.45. Those models are outside this snapshot. A 4.8 from eight ratings on the DECERK ratchet anvil is the wrong first tool for green wood. The checks are on the secateurs buying guide.

A bypass for most live pruning

For ordinary live pruning, a spare spring, and the largest review count, read the Kynup V-11 first. On 21 October 2026 it was £9.99, with SK-5 steel, a slide lock, and 4.6 from 9,969 reviews. The bullets say 25 mm. The table says 1 inch. Both strings stay. Ambidextrous means either hand can hold it. Skip it if you cut left-handed: one UK reviewer called them right-handed and disliked the lock. Skip it for dead wood. If your grip tires, go to secateurs for weak hands. DECERK DDGJ-JD, at £19.97, has a stated 20 mm cut, replacement springs, and 4.7 from 2,402 reviews. The bullets say SK5 at 60 HRC plus titanium and a 5,000-cut line. The attribute table says titanium. None of that is an independent test.

A cheaper pair, and the sticking problem

The WORKPRO 200 mm is the stronger cheap bypass: a stated 19 mm cut, SK5 blades, a safety lock, 220 g, and 4.6 from 1,755 reviews. One UK review says a 20 mm branch took more than one cut. Another found the top switch difficult until it was loosened. There is no spare spring in the box. The 220 mm WORKPRO at the same £7.99 is 4.1 from 78 reviews, with a knob that locks during a cut and a sticky handle in one review. Spear & Jackson 7159BS, at £12.11, prints 12 mm and 4.5 from 2,264 reviews. Several UK reviews say the catch sticks shut. The bullets say an ambidextrous catch and the table says Right. Skip it past 12 mm. Dead wood is a different jaw on bypass versus anvil secateurs.

Picks that are not in this folder

Felco’s en-GB shop listed the Felco 2 at £65. BBC Gardeners' World RRPs include Kent & Stowe Lite at £34.99 and Felco 8 at £65. None of those models is a row in this twelve. A £9.99 bypass is not that tool at a discount. Leave this set for dead wood unless CUTTINGSET8 really holds both jaws: £12.71, a stated 15 mm cut, 4.5 from 3,164 reviews, a title that says bypass and anvil, and a blade-type field that says Anvil. Leave the DECERK ratchet as an overall pick: 167 g, £23.99, 4.8 from eight reviews, and an attribute line that says Anvil, Bypass. Live green wood and the largest review count: Kynup V-11. The same job at £7.99: WORKPRO 200 mm. Past the printed millimetres, use a lopper or a saw.

Common questions

What should most people buy from this set?
For ordinary live pruning, start with the Kynup V-11 at £9.99. It is a bypass with a spare spring and 4.6 from 9,969 amazon.co.uk reviews. The bullets say 25 mm and the table says 1 inch, so quote both. Skip it if you need a left-hand blade or if the wood is dead. It is the top pick for that mix of evidence and price. There was no laboratory cut of every stem in the folder.
Is the cheapest WORKPRO the best value?
The WORKPRO 200 mm is, at £7.99, with a stated 19 mm bypass and 4.6 from 1,755 reviews. The WORKPRO 220 mm is the same price and a weaker file: 4.1 from 78 reviews, a 16 mm claim, a knob that can lock during a cut, and a sticky handle in one review. Best value here means the low price that still names a bypass and has a large review count. It does not mean every listing at £7.99.
Why not the 4.8 DECERK ratchet?
Because 4.8 comes from eight ratings, and the title is a ratchet anvil. The bullets describe S mode for a direct cut and R mode for tougher wood. The attribute field says Anvil, Bypass. Seven UK texts are positive, which is too small a sample for a durability claim, and an anvil jaw is the wrong default for live roses. At £23.99 it is also the dearest row.
Is Spear & Jackson worth more than £8?
Sometimes, for a thinner job. The 7159BS at £12.11 is a bypass with a clear 12 mm cut and 4.5 from 2,264 reviews, and UK texts say the blades or the catch stick. CUTTINGSET8 at £12.71 is the two-tool idea, if the box matches a title the attribute table does not. You are buying a shorter stated cut, a familiar brand, or a second jaw, with the faults those files record.
Should I wait and buy a Felco?
Wait if you want the Felco those magazine pages describe. The Felco 2 was £65 on Felco’s en-GB shop, and The Guardian quoted one from £55.45 in April 2025. That tool is not in this folder, so this page cannot score it. If you need a bypass this week for live stems inside about 19–25 mm, the Kynup and the WORKPRO 200 mm are the files with large review counts at £9.99 and £7.99.
