Telescopic loppers

Updated: 22 October 2026

The branch you want is above the fence, and the ladder is the thing you are trying not to climb. Telescopic loppers add length so you can cut from the ground. They do not replace a ladder, and a lock that slips gives the length back halfway through the close. The [loppers comparison](/hub/garden-tree-and-hedge-shears/loppers) lists which of the ten cards extend and which stay fixed. This page stays with reach, the numbers that clash, and the weight once your arms are up. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Peter F. used the listing lines saved on 19 October 2026 and the public UK sources below. There is no lab test here.

What the extra length is for

The extra length is for a stem you can reach with both feet on the ground. The Health and Safety Executive says cut low branches from the ground with long-handled tools, not from a ladder. If the wood is too high for the handles you can lock, the job has outgrown a lopper. The HAUTMEC bullet says 70–95 cm at 1.53 kg. The Kimura Pro 302 says 650–950 mm at 1.26 kg. The AIRAJ cards print 42–61 cm, 43–60 cm, and 70–90 cm. The 8090RS says the handles extend and does not print a centimetre range. A Wolf Garten length in Gardeners' World is not in this ten. Do not copy it onto these ASINs.

Lengths that disagree

The 8100RS bullet says a maximum of 800 mm and, in the same sentence, 72 cm or 28 inches. Those are not the same length. A Gardeners' World figure of 72–104 cm is a different Spear & Jackson and must not be pasted onto this card. The HAUTMEC bullet says 70–95 cm and the size field says 68–94 cm. The title ends HT0149-UK and the model field says HT0461. The AIRAJ 618991 says 70–90 cm and also 68–88 cm. Use the shorter band until you have measured the tool. UK reviews of the 42–61 cm bypass say the box reads mini loppers. The VonHaus shears are not the lopper's 44–77 cm handles.

Locks and weight

A twist lock is a cam you tighten so the inner tube stays out. On the 42–61 cm and 43–60 cm AIRAJ cards, UK reviews say the twist loosens and the arms shorten. On the 8100RS the arms shorten if the twist-and-lock is not secured. The Kimura's easy-twist was stiff at first, then held. A MoneySavingExpert thread about a different twist lock is not evidence against one ASIN you have not read. The AIRAJ 618991 is listed at 2.05 kg. The 8100RS is 1.58 kg and the 8090RS is 1.62 kg. If the arms shorten mid-cut, stop. Wear a hard hat whenever the cut is overhead.

When a short fixed lopper is enough

The fixed pair is the alternative when the stem is already in reach. The AIRAJ 2046 is 43 cm and 660 g, with no lock to slip, and it is useless over a tall fence. The best loppers page puts it next to the 8100RS. The AIRAJ 616C91F is 53 cm and 1.1 kg. The head is a cutting pad, and the field's 52 cm is not the jaw. The loppers buying guide puts the choice in order: head, cut, reach, then the review count.

Common questions

Do telescopic loppers let you skip a ladder?
They let you reach further from the ground. They do not make ladder work safe, and this page does not explain ladder technique. The Health and Safety Executive wants low branches cut from the ground with long-handled tools. If the stem is still out of reach once the lock is set, stop. A longer handle is not a step.
Which listings in this set actually extend?
The HAUTMEC, the Kimura Pro 302, both Spear & Jackson ratchets, three AIRAJ cards (42–61 cm, 43–60 cm, and 70–90 cm), and the VonHaus lopper handles. The 43 cm AIRAJ and the 53 cm AIRAJ do not extend. The 8090RS says telescopic and does not print a centimetre range.
What is wrong with a printed length that includes two different numbers?
You cannot know which length will arrive, and you cannot plan a cut on the longer one. The 8100RS bullet prints 800 mm and 72 cm together. The HAUTMEC prints 70–95 cm and 68–94 cm. The AIRAJ 618991 prints 70–90 cm and 68–88 cm. Use the shorter figure until you have measured the tool.
Why do twist locks fail in UK reviews?
The tube is held by friction or a cam, and that hold loosens when you squeeze. In this set the reviews say AIRAJ twist locks loosen and the 8100RS arms shorten if they are not secured. A lock that needs tightening again before every cut is a habit, not a fault you should ignore mid-cut. If it shortens while the blade is in the wood, stop.
When is a fixed 43 cm or 53 cm the better buy?
When you can already put the blades on the stem without extending anything. The 43 cm bypass at 660 g has no lock to slip. The 53 cm pad lopper at 1.1 kg does not extend either. Both are the wrong buy for a high branch. They are the right buy when a telescope would only add weight and a joint that can move.
How heavy is too heavy once the handles are long?
When you cannot hold the close steady, or when reviews of that listing already call it heavy overhead. The 2.05 kg AIRAJ is the heaviest single lopper here. The Spear & Jackson tools at 1.58 kg and 1.62 kg are lighter and still a load with the arms up. The Kimura at 1.26 kg is the light extending anvil in the set.
What should you do if the arms shorten mid-cut?
Stop. Do not keep squeezing while the handle collapses towards the blade. Open the tool if you can do that without twisting the stem, retighten the lock on the ground, and decide whether the stem was too thick. If the lock will not hold on a second try, that telescope is finished for the day.
What head protection do you need overhead?
A hard hat, whenever the cut is above you, because the offcut and the branch can both move. Gloves belong on your hands, and the loppers belong closed when you are walking between plants. The Basingstoke manual pairs the hard hat with the twist-or-creak stop. Overhead reach does not remove either of those.
