Loppers buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a stem that no longer fits in the secateurs. A loppers buying guide is useful only if it puts the decisions in order and tells you when to stop. The [loppers comparison](/hub/garden-tree-and-hedge-shears/loppers) holds the ten cards, with the shelf prices taken on 19 October 2026. This page does not rank those ten. It walks through the head, the printed cut, the reach, and the force help. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Peter F. used those listings and the public UK sources below. There is no lab test here.

Start with the wood, not the brand

The first choice is the wood in front of you, not the brand on the handle. A bypass lopper works like a pair of scissors: two blades pass and slice. Burgon & Ball and Gardeners' World both keep that head for living stems. An anvil drives one blade onto a block, for dead, dry, or very hard wood, and it can bruise green growth you meant to keep. The English Garden has called an anvil a good all-rounder. This page does not follow that line. The AIRAJ 2046, at about £12.99, is a fixed bypass with 3 cm on the bullet and the field, 43 cm, and 660 g. The Spear & Jackson 8100RS, at about £22.86, is an anvil ratchet with 42 mm in both places. The best loppers page names that row.

Read the stated cut, then stop

These cards print capacities from about 30 mm to about 50 mm, and a printed number is a ceiling. The RHS pruning guide keeps loppers to branches under 2.5 cm on trees, then wants a saw. On climbers, the RHS moves to a saw past about 3 cm. If the handles twist or creak, the Basingstoke green-space manual says the stem is already too thick. The Kimura Pro 302 prints 35 mm on both the bullet and the field, at about £44.99. The HAUTMEC bullet says 5 cm on fresh wood and 3.5 cm on dried wood, while the field says 2 inches. Use the dried figure when the wood is hard. The VonHaus field says 230 mm and the weight says 3.64 kg. Both belong to a kit, not the lopper jaw.

Reach, force help, and the review count

A telescopic handle is reach from the ground. It is not a ladder. The Health and Safety Executive tells people cutting trees to take low branches from the ground with long-handled tools, rather than standing on ladders. The fixed contrast is the 43 cm AIRAJ at 660 g and the 53 cm AIRAJ at 1.1 kg. Neither extends. Longer tools only help if the lock holds. That trade-off is on telescopic loppers. A ratchet cuts in steps. A compound head is sold as one squeeze with extra leverage. Several AIRAJ cards say gear in the title and ratchet in a bullet, and a 3 times line. That multiplier is the seller's line, not a test. A fault still follows the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which normally gives you 30 days to reject goods that are not as described. A 4.6 from 6,529 reviews is not the same evidence as a 4.6 from 179.

When the listing argues with itself

Four cards print two answers. The HAUTMEC title ends HT0149-UK and the model field says HT0461. The bullet says 70–95 cm and the size field says 68–94 cm. The 8100RS bullet says a maximum of 800 mm and, in the same sentence, 72 cm or 28 inches. Do not paste a magazine length from a different Spear & Jackson onto this ASIN. The AIRAJ 618991 says anvil in the title and bypass in the blade-type field. The shark-mouth block is what you are buying. The AIRAJ 616C91F title says 4 cm. The cutting-width field says 52 cm. That 52 cm is not the jaw.

Common questions

Should you buy bypass or anvil loppers first?
Buy the head that matches the wood, before you look at a telescope or a price. A bypass slices living stems. An anvil crushes onto a block and suits dead or hard wood. An anvil is not a stronger bypass, and a ratchet can sit on either head without changing that split.
How thick a branch can these loppers cut?
Stay inside the figure printed for that listing, and inside the RHS lines as well. On trees, the RHS keeps loppers and secateurs under 2.5 cm. On climbers, the move to a saw comes at about 3 cm. A title that says 5 cm does not raise those lines. If the handles twist or creak, stop and use a saw on a stem you can reach safely, or stop the job.
Is a ratchet the same as a compound action?
No. A ratchet closes in steps, so a thick dead stem can take several squeezes, and thin offcuts can feel slow. A compound or geared head is sold as extra leverage in one squeeze. A seller's 3 times line is not a measured result. If the title says gear and a bullet says ratchet, the listing has not told you which mechanism you will hold.
Do telescopic handles replace a ladder?
They add reach from the ground. They do not make a ladder a safe place to prune. If the lock slips, or the head is too heavy once the arms are out, a shorter fixed lopper is the better buy. The 43 cm AIRAJ at 660 g is that case when the stem is already in front of you. Leave any job that needs you off the ground.
How should you read a 4.6 from 179 reviews?
Read it next to the review count, not as a twin of a 4.6 from 6,529. The Kimura and the 8100RS share the star line. Only the Spear & Jackson has thousands of amazon.co.uk reviews behind it. A small file can still describe a real fault, such as a stiff twist lock, and it cannot support the same confidence as the larger file.
What do you do when the title and a field disagree?
Trust the clash, and do not average it. If one line says 4 cm and another says 52 cm, the 52 cm is not the jaw. If one line says anvil and another says bypass, look at the photos and the block. If two lengths are printed, do not pick the longer one because it sounds more useful.
