How to use gear loppers

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a two-handed geared lopper in your hands, and the last stem twisted in the jaws or tore instead of parting. Close once, with the stem seated deep and both feet on the ground, then clean and oil, and stop when the wood, the height or the site is no longer a hand-tool job. The five listings are scored on the [gear loppers comparison](/hub/garden-tree-and-hedge-shears/gear-loppers). Diameter rules stay on the [gear loppers buying guide](/hub/garden-tree-and-hedge-shears/gear-loppers/sub/gear-loppers-buying-guide). Peter F. checked the amazon.co.uk listings on 20 October 2026 and did not run a cutting test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

One close, not a series of snips

A gear or a compound linkage is built to finish the stem in one powered squeeze. Gardeners' World describes a ratchet as a cut in several steps, and gear or compound as leverage on a single close. Wonkee Donkee Tools says not to snip unless the tool is a ratchet. Seat the stem as close to the pivot as the jaws allow, then close once and open. If you are taking several bites on a tool whose title says gear, you are past the stated diameter or holding a listing whose words disagree. The compact AIRAJ’s title says gear and one bullet says ratchet. Do not follow a multi-click habit until you know which mechanism you have. If the handles twist or creak, the stem is too thick. A Basingstoke green-space volunteer manual tells volunteers to switch to a saw rather than force the blades. Forcing a stall is how edges chip. UK reviews include a compact AIRAJ blade that snapped on first use and a HAUTMEC blade that snapped on a branch under 2 inches. Those are owner reports, not a rate. The jaw, bypass or anvil, is a different decision, on bypass or anvil loppers.

Cut from the ground, just outside the collar

Place the cut just outside the branch collar, not flush to the trunk. Wonkee Donkee’s how-to says the collar is the swelling where the branch meets the parent wood, and cutting through it removes the tissue that closes the wound. On living wood, a slight slope lets water leave the face. The RHS asks for sharp tools, for dead, diseased and damaged wood, and for an undercut then an overcut once the branch is large enough to tear. Wound paint is not advised. Keep both feet on the ground. The Health and Safety Executive treats pruning low branches from the ground as one way to avoid work at height, and it still flags over-reaching and standing under the branch. A telescopic handle does not change that. HAUTMEC’s title length is 70–95 cm and the telescopic AIRAJ’s bullet range is 70–90 cm. Neither is a ladder or a pole pruner. Do not stand on a step with the handles already extended. Lock and weight on the two long listings are on telescopic gear loppers.

Clean, oil, and do not expect a spare blade

Sap left on the blade spreads disease and glues the pivot. The RHS cleaning guidance is a nylon scourer or wire wool, a water-displacing spray, a wipe, then oil at the pivot, with gloves on. Sharpen the bevel only, not the flat face, because that changes how the blade meets the anvil or the opposing edge. Disinfect between cuts when the wood is diseased. None of these five boxes lists a spare blade. A UK review of the compact AIRAJ says replacement blades are not offered. A Grüntek review says the adjustable anvil came off and that no spare parts were available. A telescopic AIRAJ review says the cutting edge broke and could not be repaired. HAUTMEC’s page asks whether the blade can be replaced and does not answer it. If the edge has snapped, stop.

Where you stop and call someone else

Put the loppers down when the branch is over a person, a road, glass or a cable, when the work needs a ladder or a rope, or when the tree may be protected. The RHS says to call an arborist if the branch is larger than your wrist or the work is up ladders, and to ask the council about a tree preservation order or a conservation area before you cut. Larger than your wrist is RHS advice for trees. It is not the cutting capacity of the AIRAJ or the Grüntek. Gardeners' World’s general lopper ceiling is about 50 mm, depending on the tool, and each listing here prints its own smaller figure. Use the figure on your tool, then the saw, then a professional. If an employer supplies the loppers, the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 require a suitable, maintained tool and instructed users. That duty does not land on every householder. HSE’s INDG318 says the effort of a hand tool is not lifting a load, and that the effort still belongs in a work risk assessment when the tool is used at work. An owner review of a snapped blade is a report, not a failure rate.

Common questions

Do gear loppers cut in one squeeze or in steps?
One squeeze, if the mechanism is a gear or a compound linkage. A ratchet is the tool that takes several bites, and it belongs in a different comparison. Wonkee Donkee says not to snip unless the mechanism is a ratchet. If the close stalls, the stem is too thick or poorly seated. Another snip on the same notch is how the edge chips.
Where on the branch should the blades sit?
As close to the pivot as the jaws allow, on a stem inside the diameter printed for that wood. Wonkee Donkee’s sequence is position, seat the stem at the fulcrum, close once, then open. A stem balanced on the tips wastes the gearing and twists the handles. If the handles twist or creak, switch to a saw.
Should you cut flush to the trunk?
No. Leave the branch collar, the swelling at the junction, and do not cut through it. On living wood, slope the face so water runs off. The RHS does not advise wound paint. A flush cut removes the tissue that would have closed the wound, however sharp the gear lopper felt.
How do you clean sap off the blades and oil the pivot?
Use a nylon scourer or wire wool and a water-displacing spray, wipe the blade, and oil the pivot, with gloves on, as the RHS describes. Sharpen the bevel only, not the flat face. Disinfect between cuts on diseased wood. Then store the tool dry. Cleaning does not increase the stated cutting width.
What do you do if the handles twist or the cut stalls?
Stop. The branch is too thick for that tool, or it is not seated at the fulcrum. The volunteer manual’s rule is to switch to a pruning saw rather than force the blades. Do not keep squeezing until the edge chips. A snapped blade in these boxes has no listed spare to fit.
