Gear loppers buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

Secateurs have stalled on a stem that is thicker than a rose cane, and the amazon.co.uk shelf mixes gear, compound, ratchet and telescopic. This gear loppers buying guide puts the questions in order: the head for the wood, then a one-squeeze mechanism whose words agree, then a diameter for fresh wood and for dry wood, and only then length, weight and price. The five listings sit on the [gear loppers comparison](/hub/garden-tree-and-hedge-shears/gear-loppers). Peter F. used those amazon.co.uk listings as checked on 20 October 2026. Start with the wood, not the price

Living wood wants a bypass slice. Dead, dry or rough clearance wants an anvil. Burgon & Ball sends living material to a blade that passes the jaw, and dead or very hard wood to a blade that closes on a block. Gardeners' World makes the same split: anvil for dense dead wood, bypass where secateurs stop on living stems. In this set only the compact AIRAJ, ASIN B097GVPJ74, is an unambiguous bypass, at £12.99, 43 cm and 660 g, with a stated 3 cm cut on live branches and twigs. It does not name dry hardwood. Grüntek, Jardineer and HAUTMEC state anvil. A gear changes the squeeze. It does not change which jaw the plant needs. The head comparison is bypass or anvil loppers.

Gear and compound mean one close

A gear or a compound linkage is meant to finish in one powered close. A ratchet takes the same stem in several bites and belongs in the ratchet-loppers comparison, not in this one. Gardeners' World describes a ratchet as a cut in steps, and gear or compound as leverage on a single cut. Read the listing before you trust the title. The compact AIRAJ’s title says a gear drive, and one bullet says a ratchet and a composite effect of 3 times. The telescopic AIRAJ, B0DJ6J1Q4S, says a four-point lever, not the word gear, and still claims 3 times more strength. Grüntek says up to 2.2 times, HAUTMEC a 3 times line, and Jardineer gear assist. None of those multipliers was measured on these ASINs. Fiskars’ 3 times line and Burgon & Ball’s 50 percent figure belong to other tools.

Read two diameters, then the length

Dry wood is harder than fresh wood of the same thickness, so read both figures when the listing prints them. Grüntek prints fresh green wood to 33 mm and dry wood to 29 mm, while the cutting-width field prints 33 mm only. HAUTMEC prints fresh branches within 5 cm and dried branches within 3.5 cm, while the field says 2 inches and the title says a 5 cm cut. The compact AIRAJ and the Jardineer both print 3 cm. The Jardineer bullet also says 0.8 inches to 1.2 inches. The telescopic AIRAJ’s field says 5.5 cm and a bullet says about 5 cm, with no fresh-versus-dry split. Gardeners' World’s about 50 mm is a rule of thumb, not a promise for the 3 cm AIRAJ. Length comes after the stem fits: the bypass AIRAJ is 43 cm and 660 g, the Jardineer 42 cm, and the Grüntek 470 mm and 687 g. Jardineer weight also prints as 220 g, 1.36 lbs and 615 g. HAUTMEC is 70–95 cm and 1.53 kg. The telescopic AIRAJ is about 70–90 cm and 2.05 kg. A 470 mm handle is waist height, not a failed telescopic. Locks are on telescopic gear loppers. No spare blade is listed.

What the price bands do not settle

Shelf prices run from £12.99 to £39.99: compact AIRAJ £12.99 with 4.4 from 857 reviews, Jardineer £19.99 with 4.4 from 20, Grüntek £24.98 with 4.6 from 5,042, telescopic AIRAJ £30.99 with 4.4 from 137, and HAUTMEC £39.99 with 4.4 from 248. Those counts are not a cutting test, and none of these five won a Gardeners' World, RHS or laboratory test in the sources used here. Outside this set, Gardeners' World cited RRPs from £25.99 for a Darlac to £219.99 for a Felco 231. If a tool arrives not as described, the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, gives a 30-day short-term right to reject. Who should keep each ASIN is on best gear loppers.

Common questions

What should you check before the price on a gear lopper?
Check the head against the wood, then whether the mechanism words describe one close, then the diameter for fresh wood and for dry wood if both are printed. Length and weight come after the stem fits that diameter. Price and the review count are last. A low price on the wrong head is still the wrong tool, which is why the compact bypass and the short anvils are not interchangeable at £12.99 and £24.98.
Is a gear or compound lopper the same as a ratchet lopper?
No. Gear and compound action are meant to add leverage to one squeeze. A ratchet finishes the stem in several bites. Gardeners' World draws that line, and this comparison keeps ratchet tools out. The compact AIRAJ is the awkward case, because the title says gear and one bullet says ratchet, so you should not assume a single close until you have the tool in your hands.
Why do some listings give a fresh-wood diameter and a smaller dry-wood diameter?
Dry wood resists more than sappy green wood of the same thickness. Grüntek prints 33 mm for fresh green wood and 29 mm for dry wood. HAUTMEC prints fresh within 5 cm and dried within 3.5 cm. Using the larger number on dry wood is how people overload the head. Where the listing prints only one figure, that figure is the only ceiling you can quote.
When is a short fixed lopper enough?
A fixed 42 cm, 43 cm or 470 mm lopper is enough when the stem is at waist or chest height and inside the stated diameter. You need a telescopic handle when the branch is above the shoulder and you still intend to keep both feet on the ground. A telescopic handle is extra reach and extra weight. It is not a better head, and it is not a ladder.
Can a 3 times or 2.2 times line be treated as a measured force?
No. Those lines are seller claims on these listings. They were not measured in a test that this page can cite for these ASINs. The same caution applies to a 3 times line on a Fiskars page and a 50 percent line on a Burgon & Ball page: those belong to other tools. Buy on the head, the printed diameter and the review complaints, not on the multiplier.
