How to prune with loppers

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are standing at a shrub, a rose, or the base of a hedge, and the last cut either crushed the stem or stopped halfway. How to prune with loppers is a sequence: look for a nest, match the head to the wood, seat the stem, close once, and stop when the handles will not meet or the limb belongs to a saw. The [Fiskars loppers comparison](/hub/garden-tree-and-hedge-shears/fiskars-loppers) lists the amazon.co.uk models these warnings refer to. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Peter F. followed the Royal Horticultural Society’s pruning guidance, GOV.UK’s wild-bird and hedgerow pages, and the limits on Fiskars bullets. There is no lab trial.

Check the head before you close it

A bypass or a hook slices living green wood. An anvil closes onto a block and can crush a green stem. Fiskars bullets on the anvils in this set exclude fresh green growth. The L11 says the opposite: not for dry, hard twigs. A green rose belongs on a bypass. A dead branch can go on an anvil. Gear does not change the block. Which model to buy is on the bypass versus anvil page. If the blade is notching the bark, sharpen or replace the blade the listing names. Kit 1001640 is a separate sharpener.

Place the stem and close once

Put the stem deep in the jaw and close once. If the handles will not meet, stop. Bouncing or twisting is how a bypass crosses. Reviews on longer Fiskars loppers describe a wide-open stance at the printed diameter. On a shrub, the RHS beginner guidance is to take dead, damaged, and diseased shoots once secateurs will not do it. If you do not know the shrub, cut less. On a rose, finish no more than 5 mm above a bud, sloping away, and choose an outward bud for an open centre. An anvil crushes that green cane. If the lopper will not close, the RHS route is a saw.

Stop for a saw, a collar, or a nest

The RHS tree guide draws a line at about 2.5 cm. Under that, secateurs or loppers. Above that, a saw back to the branch collar, not flush and not as a stub. A heavy limb needs an undercut and then an overcut so the bark does not tear. A Fiskars Ø 5 cm or Ø 5.5 cm line does not cancel that. Climber renovation is a separate RHS note, up to about 3 cm, and it is not a Fiskars capacity. Diameters are on the thick-branch page. Before any cut, look for a nest. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 makes it an offence to harm a wild bird, a nest in use or being built, or an egg. If a nest is there, stop. Schedule 1 birds have extra protection against disturbance. Call a professional for a limb over a road or a roof, a possible tree preservation order, or any ladder-and-saw cut. PUWER 1998 applies only when the lopper is work equipment.

Know which hedge rule you are under

The bird law applies in a garden. The dated hedge ban does not. GOV.UK’s rules for England say you must not cut a covered hedgerow from 1 March to 31 August. That test is for a longer hedge on or next to agricultural land, which can include horticulture and allotments. A short town-garden hedge is not automatically covered. Nest protection still is. Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales are not copied into that England page. When the head, the close, and the nest check all pass, you can take the stem.

Common questions

Can I prune roses with an anvil lopper?
The anvil listings in this set say they are not for fresh green growth, and a rose cane you want to keep is that growth. Burgon & Ball’s reason is the crush. A bypass, with the RHS 5 mm cut above an outward bud, is the head that matches a living rose. Keep the anvil for dry or hard wood where a crushed end is acceptable. Gear on the anvil does not turn it into a bypass.
What do I do if the handles will not close on the stem?
Stop. The stem is at or past the limit, even if a contents line prints a larger diameter and even if you could force the grips almost straight. Do not bounce or twist the blades to finish. Move to a thinner stem or to a pruning saw. On a tree limb over about 2.5 cm, the RHS wants that saw taken back to the collar, not a lopper stub.
Is it illegal to cut my garden hedge in spring if birds might be nesting?
You must not intentionally harm a wild bird, a nest that is in use or being built, or an egg. That is the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and GOV.UK tells you to check before trimming trees, bushes, and hedges. If a nest is there, you stop. Spring is when you look, not a date that by itself makes every snip an offence. The check is the duty.
Does the March to August hedge rule apply to my garden hedge?
Not automatically. The 1 March to 31 August ban on GOV.UK is for covered agricultural hedgerows in England that meet the length and location tests. A short town-garden boundary is often outside that rule. Nest protection still applies, in England and in the rest of the UK under the bird law. If the hedge might be agricultural, read the GOV.UK tests before you cut.
When should I stop and call someone else?
Stop for a nest, for handles that will not close, for a limb over a road or a roof, for a possible tree preservation order, and for any ladder-and-saw cut. The RHS points unsure tree work to a qualified person and names the Arboricultural Association. A longer handle does not make those jobs a DIY cut.
