Fiskars loppers buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are replacing a tired pair, or buying a first Fiskars lopper, and the orange handles look alike until the stem crushes or the handles will not meet. A Fiskars loppers buying guide is a fixed order: wood, then a diameter you can close, then reach and weight, then gear, and only then price and warranty. The [Fiskars loppers comparison](/hub/garden-tree-and-hedge-shears/fiskars-loppers) holds every amazon.co.uk listing in this set and the shelf snapshots. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Peter F. used those listings as checked on 20 October 2026, plus Fiskars UK PowerGear notes, Burgon & Ball’s head guide, and the Consumer Rights Act 2015. There is no lab test here.

Start with the wood, not the price

Living green stems want a bypass or a hook: the L78, L70, L11, L86, and the inch-marked bypass listings. Dry or hard wood wants an anvil: the L77, the L31, and the LX99. Those anvil bullets exclude fresh green growth. Burgon & Ball says an anvil can crush living tissue. The L11 bullets exclude dry, hard twigs. The L31 at £29.65 stops at Ø 3.5 cm. The L11 at £16.32 is fresh wood up to Ø 38 mm. BBC Gardeners' World’s general-use line for the LX99 is their judgement. The three-times and twelve-times lines on Fiskars’ UK PowerGear page belong to other tools. The L13 table says anvil, while the bullets describe a hook and fresh wood up to Ø 45 mm. Trust the fresh-wood sentence.

Read the diameter you can close

Write down the contents line: L31 Ø 3.5 cm, L70 Ø 3.8 cm, L11 Ø 38 mm, L86 Ø 4 cm, L13 Ø 45 mm, L78 and L77 Ø 5 cm, LX99 Ø 5.5 cm. The 15 inch and 28 inch listings say up to 1.5 inches. The 32 inch PowerGear2 says up to 2 inches. The L70 also prints 2.8 cm in the size line. Treat the lower figure as the stop. If the handles must open almost flat, reviews on the L78 and the LX99 say you are already at the limit. PowerGear does not add centimetres. 1.5 inches is about 3.8 cm and 2 inches about 5.1 cm by our multiplication, not a printed listing figure. The Fiskars loppers for thick branches page keeps the RHS line of about 2.5 cm for tree limbs.

Match reach and weight to the bed

The L70 is about 46 cm and 490 g. The L31 is about 39 cm. The 15 inch PowerGear is about 408 g, and reviews include snapped heads. The L78 is about 70 cm and 1.06 kg, the L11 is 81 cm and 1.25 kg, and the LX99 is 80 cm and 1.36 kg. Reviews still call the LX99 and the 32 inch model heavy at shoulder height. The L13 runs 63–83 cm and 1.6 kg at £26.31. The L86 runs 66–90 cm and 1.3 kg at £42.53, and reviews include locks that do not hold. Skip both if the bed is small enough for the L70.

Treat gear, parts, and warranty as last

PowerGear here is one closing stroke, not a ratchet and not extra centimetres. PowerGear II is the L78, the L70, and the anvil L77. PowerGear X is the LX99. PowerGear2 is the 18 inch and 32 inch name. Kit 1001640 is separate, and none of these twelve listings include it. Those two imports share one 4.7-from-7,210 review line. Warranty text is two years on the L78, L86, L77, L70, and L31, twenty-five years on the LX99 only, and a full lifetime line on the 15 inch and 28 inch listings. Copy the sentence from the ASIN. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 still requires a match to the description. The best Fiskars loppers page names one job each.

Common questions

Should I buy a Fiskars bypass or anvil lopper?
Buy a bypass or hook if the stem is living and you want a slicing cut. Buy an anvil if the wood is dry or hard and a crushed end does not matter. Fiskars’ anvil bullets say the L77, L31, and LX99 are not for fresh green growth. The L11 bypass is not for dry, hard twigs. A lower price does not swap those jobs. If you cut both, you are looking at two heads.
Does PowerGear let me cut a thicker branch than the listing states?
No. PowerGear is leverage through one closing stroke. The L70 is still stated around Ø 3.8 cm on the contents line, and the L31 around Ø 3.5 cm, gear or not. Fiskars’ larger times-easier claims on its UK site belong to other tools in the family. They are not a measured result for every lopper ASIN here. If the handles will not meet, the stem is at the limit.
Are telescopic Fiskars loppers worth the extra weight?
They are worth it when a fixed 46 cm or 70 cm pair cannot reach and you can hold the weight. The L13 is 63–83 cm and 1.6 kg at £26.31. The L86 is 66–90 cm and 1.3 kg at £42.53, and reviews include locks that slip. In a small bed the L70 is the simpler fresh-wood tool.
Which Fiskars loppers have a 25-year warranty?
In this snapshot only the LX99 listing states twenty-five years. The L78, L86, L77, L70, and L31 state two years. The 15 inch and 28 inch listings say a full lifetime warranty in their own text. Do not copy the LX99 sentence onto an orange handle that does not print it. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 still applies to satisfactory quality and description on a two-year listing.
Can I use a US-import Fiskars lopper and still get the European spare blade?
Do not assume it. The 18 inch and 32 inch PowerGear2 listings carry an international-products note, and they do not print the European article numbers used on the L70, L77, or LX99 blades. Kit 1001640 is the separate sharpener named on several European listings. Match the spare to the article on your own listing, not to the colour of the handles.
